New mini horse

As some of you know when i was akid I had horses,my love was my paint pony Little Bit Loved her soooooooooo much!! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: All my adult life in the back of my mind I have wanted too get another horse but I knew I was stabled enough. The last 6mths i have toyed arund w/ this idea, and Samantha(my 9yr old girl)was just so excited about it.Knowing how kids are I figured if she gets bored w/ it,then it will be all mine!!LOL!!So anyways I looked around, and I didnt want a colt or a young horse just due too Sam would be around it and wanted something that had experience around people.
Ok so now one day my boyfriend(Sams dad)comes home and is all excited and tells me he saw this HUGE pasture of mini horses and that they are so darn cute.I had wanted a mini horse just too get Sam used too a bigger animal. So I call this lady and set up a time too met her and play w/ ALL her horses.last Sunday we went out and I wasnt impressed w/ her set up at al!!!So me and Sam was standing in this area and ALL these minis are around us,and im noticeing that ALL of these minis are biting, and chaseing other horses, and I am very aware of the pecking order, but this seemed a bit over the top.So im walking around keeping Sam next too me,and of course the horses are adorable, but then im really looking around.I realize it is mud season and I realize everything in a pasture is going too be muddy, but I stop and think "where do these little ones go too be dry?"I mean hoof rot,and it was SOOOOOOOO slushy and butt deep in mud it was almost funny. Then I noticed this little tiny buck skin being chased around by the others, and finally he just walks away w/ his ears back walking WAAAYYYY out in the pasture. My heart went out too him.
So we ge out of the pasture, and Im talking too the lady and she says "Ya know w/ your little one here it would be better too get a mini who is shy."At 1st i thought a friendly one,but she was right because Sam was soooo nervous. So she said you see that little buck skin out here?I said yes,he is cute but i couldnt get near him due too the others picking on him.She goes on too tell me how she feels he would be a good choice or us,due too him not being an "In your face horse right away".So I told her we would thnk about it and let her know. All the way home we are talking about him,Sam was not impressed and did not want him,but something inside me was like he is the one.I didnt want too pay too much for our 1st horse so the price was right at $400.00.So I decided we would go out and see him.I called the lady and she said Ill put him up in a smaller area so you can get in and put him on a lead.Perfect i said.So we go out there, and there he is,Standing w/ his little ears back.I go into his area and he turns his butt too me and I think oh here we go,Im gonna be taken out by a 28inch horse!!LOL!!So i talk too him and i grab his halter and pet his side, and of course we came loaded w/ carrots. So I gave him a carrot, let him go too eat it,and then I put him on a lead.We walked aorund, and as Im walking w/ him Im thinking look at all this mud!!theres No place too take him,too a dry area.So Sam says hey mommy theres a area of dry mud!!LOL!!So we walk him over there, and by this time Im thnking he walks well on a lead,he hasnt tried oo bite me OR kick me.I did a few test on him, like would he let me lift his front feet?Yes he did.I felt him all over and found that he doesnt like his butt too be touched!!LOL!! :cow: Then I raised my hand too go over his head, and BOOM!!!he freaked ou!!I knew right away he had been abused.he was very head shy,and did NOT want us touching his head.Which isnt good if your going too put a halter on him.So the lady comes over and says Well whatda ya think?I said hes sweet, smart, and cute, but do you know if he ever was abused? She says OH NO!!!!! I got him from a petting zoo about 2mths ago,he is just shy from the other horses.I kept my mouth shut, knowing darn well a horse doesnt get head shy from other hourses picking on him.(i had a pony and my mom and sisters horse picked on her and she NEVER was head shy).So she walks over too him and GRABS his head and says SEE he is just fine!!LOL!The whole time the horse is freaking out!! 8O Deep in my heart I knew all he needed was LOTS of love and time. She admitted too me she hasnt even touched him since the day she brought him home in over 2mths!!!Before I knew it I was saying ill take him.I looked around too see where the stables were at,and were would we tie him out too groom, and there was no place. All she had was this barn in the pasture that was maybe 300sq feet for 40minis,a sheep,4donkeys,and 10goats.Going home I was on a mission too get him out of there.
Today I went too this stable nd talked too this lady about boarding, she has wonderful stables 10x10oak stalls, indoor ring, outside pastures, heated bath area.So she says what kind of horse do you have??I said a mini. She says too me oh so your going too want too board him outside.i was like NO!he is going too be boarded inside. She looks at me,and says well "usually"only Show horses are kept in stables.I said I dont care, she says well your going oo pay $240.00 a mth for inside.i looked at her and said ya know thats NOTHING too me.I told her the minis story, and she asked where did you get him?I told her the ladies name and her mouth dropped. She said ya know she is a dealer of minis, and typically she goes too auction buys minis really cheap and sells them too meat plants(for dogs other animals)It all made sence then.thats why these poor animals didnt have a place too get dry,or fed properly.I was so mad!!We talked for 2hrs,and she says I know now why you want him inside, and Ill give you a better price.i told her once summer comes putting him in a pasture was fine, but in the cold wet mths I want him in a nice dry, safe stable.Where he can eat w/o being biten.
I dont know why every time I set out too get a new pet I ALWAYS seem too find the abused, negelcted, ones.i dont know why,but its crazy.
All I know is Im so excited too get him out of the gross place where he is now,and get him into a warm, dry place and just fill him w/ tons of love.
Ill keep all posted on how he is doing. His name now is Buck a roo,but i cant stand that name so we will change it once we get too know him.

BTW>>>>my T's also stick on my key board!!

Tanya! that great! :clappurple: I'm so glad you were able to find your little buckskin guy! Sounds like it would be a good idea for him to have stable boarded for a few months so he can put some weight on, and relax a little in his new surroundings. It'll be so much easier for you to begin to build a trusting relationship with him one on one when you don't have to worry about herd issues! Are you think about putting him out in the summer at all? I generally prefer pasture board when it is nice out... the horses can be outside, graze all day long the way they were meant to, play with the other horses, they're much more mentally stimualted... plus they sweat sooo bad in those stalls in the summer! I suppose it could be harder, since he's sooo much littler then all the other horses... does she have a baby or pony pasture where he could hang out with the smaller sized guys?

I'm so excited for you!!! what are you gonna name him? and do we get pictures???
Tanya,
What you did for this little guy is so heartwarming.
Congrats and I hope he gets over his issues.
congrats an the new addition :D
I'm happy for you Tanya. Takes me back to my childhood days reading Black Beauty.
I envy you... I miss having horses, and I can't wait until someday I can again. Congrats :)
Congratulations, Tanya! The poor little guy! Can't wait to hear more stories and see pictures!
Chris
I am so glad you rescued that sweet little horse. I absolutely love the mini horses and wanted one since I first laid eyes on them. You are so lucky maybe I can live vicariously through you. Best of luck getting him situated. Can't wait for pictures. That's terrible about her selling them for other things.
Good moring everyone!!! :D
Well Sam and I went and looked at another stable for our new addition last night. It was nice, and the people running it ar very experienced w/ horses, her stalls are the same size, but she didnt have the indoor area too bath Id have to use a hose out in the parking lot,and even in the summer Wi's water from a hose is still COLD.She also has only show horses and she had a horse their that is boarded who weighs OVER 2,500lbs!! 8O he was HUGE!!!!!So she didnt feel it would be safe too put him in pasture at all, that all the pasture he'd get is when we come and take him out.
Also this place is like 25mins away,BUT it is only $125.00mth.So I was kind of torn as too what too do.So I came home and made a pros and cons list for each place. The 1st stables i looked at only had 1 con and that was because it was 200.00 vs 125.00.So me and Sam are going out tomrrow morning too check out the 1s place 1 more time and im 99% sure we will be useing her.I mean for the extra $75.00 we get so much more, not only is it 4mins away, our little guy WILL go toopasture in the warm mths.So he will be in a stall Nov.-April,then the rest of ime out in a pasture w/ a area too get out of the weather.he will also have 2 friends,a sheep and a goat!!LOL!!!So there wont be on picking on him!!YEAY!! The vet is going out Monday too give him his shots, give him an exam, and give him a coggins test(blood test),hopefully next week end he will be home finally!!WOOOHOOO!!!!
I just cant wait too groom him!!Gawd im so nurotic!!LOL!!!
Thank you so much everyone for all you swet words too us and our new baby!!I suck at posting pics(my computer is aweful!!)but I will get some on as soon as I get him home!!!
That's great, Tanya! I'm very happy for you and the little boy you've rescued! :D
That sounds great Tanya! And his new summer pasture mates sound perfect- nice sized for him to play with if he wants and keep him company, but no so big that he might accidentally get hurt! Good luck with your new guy!
Tanya, you are such a good person. I feel sorry for the little guy but I know you'll make his life better. I've boarded my horse for 19 years and my advice is: board your horse where the care is best. Our barn only has a cold water hose (in northern Illinois) and they don't care. It feels good in the hot summer. But I only bathe my horse 2 or 3 times in the summer. You don't need an indoor since you won't be riding. My biggest thing is turnout. My horse must be out 8-10 hours a day. I like him to be in at night. Horses like their "bedrooms" plus it's away from the bugs in the summer and the cold in the winter.

Good luck with finding a better name. Post pictures when you can.
Ok just wanted too let everyone know that my new baby is finally HOME in his stable!! :go: Of course the person I got him was supposed too help me transfer him,but w/her being so busy neglecting animals and such me and my best friend moved him in her harley trailer. It went so smooth!!!Once we got him at the stables the lady Linda(wonderful lady!!)came running out too help unload him,and she took him to an area so he can walk around and get too know the joint. She said too me he is really skinny!! 8O I was like really???And that she could tell he had been very abused and not too mention neglected. He needs ALOT of grooming, and many healthy meals. She said once he gets healthy he would be a wonderful buddy. It was about 3pm and Sam was going too be home so i went home, and at 5pm me,Sam,her dad,my best friend, her hubby, and their 4yr old all went too see Oliver(his new name)Linda showed me the best way too halter him,and I took him out and we walked down a path,Oliver walked a bit peppier this time,it was awesome i was walking him,and my family all follwed. We stopped so he could soak all this newness in,and of course we whipped out some apples and carrots. We headed back too the barn, and stopped so oliver could meet his summer pasture buddies a sheep and a goat!!LOL!!!After an hr or so I said Ok buddy its time for nightie night, and took him too his DRY,CLEAN,stall w/ CLEAN water, and FRESH hay.I showed everyone around and we went up too the lounge we was watching the granddaughter of Linda work her horse,i could see Olive straight down and I was watching him eat his hay,and look out from his stall. We went down too the arena and the girls asked if Sam and her 4yr old cousin wanted too ride this HUGE beautiful horse, and of course they both said YES!!I was shocked!!So they both hopped in the saddle and off they went(w/ the girl leading them around)the girl told us that she takes this horse too give kids w/ CP rides and such. This horse was so cool!!!I cant wait til the AM,Im going too groom him for just a little bit too get him used too me but not overwhelm him.It was a wonderful day!!  Just knowing he is in a wonderful place for the 1st time in his life is an awesome feeling!Ill keep all updated!! :hearts: :hearts:
How absolutely wonderful! I love horses, and the little ones are dolls! One of our neighbors has 2 mini's, that he keeps as pets in his yard. They are both over 20 years old, and very friendly.

Marianne and the boys
Sounds like he is going to be very happy. Bless you for taking him.
Can't wait to hear more.
Another update on Oliver. He is such a doll. What a perfect boy he is.We have gone out every day so far. This Am I went out and it was just him and I,no one was around. We went for our walk, then we jogged for a bit,he has his ears nice and perked up,he lifts up his hooves all proud, and he is already a differnt horse. It is VERY windy today,so we went back in the barn too groom, and it was the 1st time I tried cleaning his hooves.I rubbed his leg all the way down, and when i reached his hoof I said Oliver foot,he lifted it up for me,and let me clean it out!! :go: :go: :go: I then moved oo the back, and once again he lifted it up.I was so proud of him.I sat down in front of him,and was rubbing his chest, his lips did that "Oh that feels good!!  "look it was so cute.I brushed his face and talked too him, told him he never has too worry about food, water, love,or anything ever again,it was at this point he leaned gently into me(i know this can be an issue, but hes so small!!hehe)and relaxed his head on my knee. Its amazing how much stress is released when I spend time w/ him.Its so relaxing, and so rewarding. His mane is so soft and shiney already from brushing and awesome diet.Saturday Im worming him. hope he takes that well!!LOL!!I will post pics ASAP,I have some that needs too be developed.I took before pics, come early summer I want too compare he pics w/ his new look.Thank you too all who is following his progress it means alot too me.
Can't wait to see pictures. Love hearing how he is progressing.
Awww....Tanya...you're making me tear up with that story!! He's so happy to be your baby!! It's so wonderful how they respond to your affection, attention and care. Can't wait to see him! :)
