SUREGROW supplement for puppies

The breeder I will be getting a puppy from strongly suggests purchasing a supplement product named SUREGROW and giving it to my future puppy the first 18 mos of its life. It promotes tendon, ligament, teeth and bone growth development. My breeder recommends it for hip health.

I was wondering if anyone out there is using/has used the product. If so, any insight will be appreciated?

I'm in favor of anything preventitive but was just hoping to get some other opinions before I run out and get a case of it.

If your dog comes from healthy stock, you feed it a well balanced feed, you don't over-use preventtives or follow too rigorous a vaccine schedule and get the follow-up vaccines that are only needed or required, then a supplement of this sort is just not needed.
In my opinion.
The only think that is very different about this supplement than others is the phosphorous and vitamin D levels. If a dog is outside enough it should be able to form its own vitamin D, using sunlight and vitamins and nutrients found in a well balanced food. Phosphorous, like vitamin C comes from vegies and fruit as well, but not in the quantities listed in this supplement. bone meal usually does have lots of phophorous though.

There have been studies on large dogs that indicate they can get TOO much calcium while they are growing puppies. Seems the fast growing dogs are generally more efficient in absorbing Calcium, so they don't actully need that much.
Then there's othe studies that show that IF your dog has a joint disease that hings like citrate, MSM, and glucosamine will help delay the onset and decrese the severity.

Like all studies, you have to wonder who is paying for them and how objective they are .... and even if they were well done and objective, unless 100% of the test subjects were actually helped b a supplement , then how can you know if it is going to help your dog.
Basically a balanced diet that you supplement with these things would be just as good. Even better would be to supplement the food with food natually high in these compounds like vegies, fruits, and (I know I am going to catch flck for this) but some large bones (MSM and glucosamine are found in bone material I have been told).
I have never used this product, but it has several web pages. One search lead to this link:

It seems to be more of an advertisement, and though most of what it states is commonly thought true, I am not sure that a dog that is born with a hip disease will ever be "cured" any more than someone with parents with arthritis could optimistically think they will never get it either.
If it has everything it says it has it could be considered a well-rounded supplement. Still most large breed dog foods contain almost the same things, so wouldn't this just be over-kill?
It should be interesting to see what others think. My 5 year old Abbi is well beyond the 18 month old age, so I will just have to hope for the best i guess.
In my past experience with my OES, I wouldn't use supplements to promote growth. About a week after I got Max (he was already 14 weeks), he started to Limp, and after taking him to the Vet, we found out he had- in our terms- growing pains. His bones were growing too quickly. My vet narrowed it down to:
Panosteitis: This disorder occurs when the normal process of bone degeneration and resorption fails to occur. As a result, there is an excess formation and thickening of bone. This condition most commonly affects the long bones of either the front (humerus) or hind (femur or tibia) limbs. Males have a higher risk than females for panosteitis.

My pup was in so much pain he could not walk. My vet advised me to stop feeding him puppy chow because of the calcium in it. We had him on steroids for about 2 weeks, and even had to take him to the hospital for a night of narcotics to help ease his pain. I don't know who hurt more, me or him. I felt so bad for him, he was layed up for about 3 weeks, and got it in 2 legs. I even thought about bringing him back to the breeder (which they did offer to give me new puppy), but there was not way I was giving him up. We had to carry him everywhere, outside to pee, to his food dish, etc. He now is doing great, no after effects at all. We missed alot of play time with him when he was small, but he is running and jumping like no ones business now.

I am no expert on the matter, but from my experience natural gowth is the way to go. The only supplement I give max is Vitamin C a few times a week. And I only do this becasue the breeder guarantees against hip dsylexia if I give the pup Vit C
Thanks for the info (plus the link) and certainly I want him to grow at his normal rate. The funny thing is that the manufacturer says this supplement helps with Rickets too.

I had to have my last OES on arthritis medicine the last 2.5 years of his life so I was wondering if this would delay the onset. He was really physically active too. I was always getting "I can't believe what muscle tone he has for a dog his age" comments. I know keeping them active really helps keep the arthritis symptoms down.

It's difficult to know what is best and any info helps. This breeder was recommended by Janet Loher and I also checked a bit into her background and she seems extremely reputable and has been breeding for over 30 years with only an average of 1 litter a year. She also gives her pups 1000 units of Vitamin C daily too and feeds them Eukanuba puppy chow along with 1 tablespoon of yogurt.

So far I really love this breeder. She seems genuinely concerned about the health & welfare of her dogs.

2 weeks until we pick him up. I will be sure to post lots of pix.

I'll see if I can find out anymore info when I bring him in to get checked out by my vet once I get him.

Thanks again!

Hi,
Just wanted to give an update about the Suregrow after all of your comments. My vet says if the pup gets a quality dog food there is no reason to use this kind of supplement, in fact, all of the extra calcium in the product can form kidney stones. So thanks everyone for throwing up the red flags.
