Raw bones and teeth

Since I made to decision 3 years ago to feed raw bones I have seen a terrific change in the Babies teeth.... If you feed a beef rib bone or femar bone you won't have to take them to have their teeth cleaned.... They keep them buys for days.....The bone marrow is a terrific sourse of natural calcium too. Raw bones DO NOT splinter.....Cooked bones spinter...... I am a vegatarian so it was a real hard decision for me to make to give them raw anything.......But after all their teeth and digestive systems are equipped to handle them........ I have had not one problem since I started....I have much Happier Babies......No more kongs, greenies, rawhide or toys to occupy them.......Plus they don't have to go to the vet and be put to sleep to have their teeth cleaned....Throw the Baby a Bone....This is Just My Opinion

Everytime I go to the meat dept at the Grocery Store I ask if they have any bones. Saves them from throwing them away. They are happy to give them at no charge 8) My dogs LOVE rib bones and have great teeth.
After going to Philly to meet Val and Deb, I bought some marrow bones at the local butcher. Annie was in heaven for days. Only thing is that I don't like the smell and the hair on her paws are still brown. I'll wait another couple of weeks to pull the other one out of the freezer. That way she'll be bathed after the bone is finished.
I gave my dogs these bones from PetSmart, (Sorry I can't think of what they are called :( ) but they have been hollowed out and filled with flavoring, such as maple or pork. My sheepies LOVE them and it keeps them busy for a long time trying to get all the goodies out of it!
I tried to feed everyone raw, but I'm not a shopper. Gathering all the raw meaty bones, produce and supplements was more than I wanted to do. That said, while I was raw feeding, the k9 kids were in 7th heaven. Their teeth were great, they ate with enthusiasm, no gas, etc.

If I had fewer dogs I might go back to it.
When I just had my herd it was much easier to feed all raw....Although I did have to make some trips to Dallas { 200 miles } to get some of it....... Now that there are alot more Babies to feed I have had to cut back......I order in beef rib bones, pork neck bones, chicken wings, turkey necks by the case.......Much cheaper......I do buy heart and liver adn have the butcher slice it for me. I feed the heart raw { muscle} but the liver I bake for treats....... I wish I could feed all raw but just can't afford it and can't get it sometimes....I'm stuck out in NO MANS LAND......But they sure do Love It and their teeth look great......Consider what does it cost to have your Baby PTS to have its teeth cleaned yearly.....I raw bone a couple of times a week would be much cheaper and much healthier for your Baby......Just My Opinion......Kaye Second Chance OES Rescue
Kaye-

Thanks for the info on this! It's good to know :) Do you ever worry about bacteria issues feeding the raw marrow bones to the dogs? I wouldn't want to make my baby puppy sick, or any little people who enter the scene down the road, and might pick up the treat...

Kaye -- where do you order from?
Raw feeding is a real touchy subject....... I am not wanting to open that can of worms......This is just my opinion........ Dogs digestive systems are built to handle raw meat .......You have heard " Don't worry about what the kid can get from the dog worry about what the dog can get from the kid"......We as humans have the bacteria in our mouths to start breaking down the the food.......A dog doeesn't..The bacteria is in their tummies.......I have talked to people that have been feed raw for over 25 years and haven't had a problem with ecoli or salmella......I have been feeding raw for over 3 years with out a problem...... What I am talking about here is just giving your Baby a raw bone for recreation.......It will last them for days.......After all they are dog and have the teeth and digestive system to handle it........It is getting past what OUR Opinions are about raw meat .Your Baby will Thank You For It.........Kaye
No, no... My question wasn't about the MEAT it was about the bones... Have you had any issues with germs on the BONES...
I can't speak for Kaye, but as far as bones, they come from the freezer with just a day to defrost in the ice box. The neck bones, chicken wings, etc are eaten entirely.......bones and all. The bones are uncooked and very soft abd pliable.

The larger bones such as femur are gnawing bones once all the goodies have been chewed off. When I have the femur ends, those get chewed off as they are pretty soft.

Once I hear a bone crack, all bones are collected and thrown away.

As far a bacteria living on the bones after they've been initially chewed, is that before or after they bury them in the dirt? Once a bone is meat and fat free and allowed to dry, is their "germ" potential any worse than a plush animal?

I understand the "germ" concern. I haven't had a problem. The bones lay around for days or weeks and are picked up for an occasional after dinner chew. All bones are eaten outside!! I don't want those stinkers in the house...or their bones either
Sheepieboss -- where do you get the raw food & bones from?
Grocery stores to start. Super WalMart usually had something; chicken wings, necks, back or pork necks. Second choice was butcher stores. You have to talk to them as they may have to order a carton for you. (so have room in your freezer!!) Many who only feed raw have a dedicated freezer just for the raw food.

Somebody in one of the raw feed email groups sent me a list of butchers in my area they found on the web. I've long ago erased it, but there's a list somewhere for your area.
Thanks! I have a basement freezer where I've been keeping frozen marrow bones, but mine come from the local pet boutique and I am hoping to find someplace cheaper. . .
I always microwave my bones for a minute or three to kill anything that might be bad for the dogs - does this make sense to anyone?
I also want to know if it is save to leave the femur bones with a dog in a crate who is unattended?
Thanks! I was just really concerned about coming into contact with E-coli on a regular basis, esp. if I get pregnant or if my future baby were to grab up on said bone and then stick their hand into their mouth.. I don't mind dog drool and dirt germs  I've yet to get sick from those!
I do freeze before giving them to the Babies......I have a basket of rib and femar bones that are weeks old.....I pick them up and they go dig and find the one they want....... I do pick them up and wash them to get the dirt from takening them outside and hiding them..... I am a Clorox freak!!!!!!!!!!!!! Clorox will KILL ANYTHING........I do run all of their veggies thru a mild solution of Clorox before giving it to them...... You can get ecoli and salmanella easier from veggies and fruits then you can from meat...... Just clean your cabinets and utinsels with Clorox after contact with meat......... Talk to your market magr at your grocery store about bones.........Many times they throw them away.......I get femar { leg } bones from butcher shops....... Throw Your Baby A Bone!!!!!!!!!!! Kaye
I have left dogs in a crate with a femur, but I look it over very carefully. It must be thick walled. Of course if it had meat and fat on it, the dog coming out will be a mess, but oh so happy. Also remember all the chewing can stimulate the digestive system. Pupper may need to relieve himself, but is still stuck in the box.

Meat and fat may be too rich for some dogs right away. I can guarantee one bitch will vomit 13-15 hours after having a bone.......timing is everything  She really does prefer her bones to be a few days old........go figure.
Thanks Kaye! Do you think it is ok for the puppiesto have bones too, or is this an adult only thing???
Can't speak for Kaye, but puppies with teeth, but not quite unweaned can handle chicken wing tips...the tips where there is no solid bone. Soon though they can go to soft thin bones.

There are several books on this subject if you are truly interested.

sheepieboss
ok. I'll probably just wait until puppy begins to teeth... at which point I'm sure I'll need plenty of thngs for them to chew on :o
that was a double negative there......unweaned pups can handle chicken wing tips as long as they have some teeth. Since they are so young, I would pay special attention to "germs" for awhile. Immunity increases with age. I doubt wing tips would stay around very long, but just in case, remove any uneaten after an hour. You might want to feed them someplace else too that can be wiped up with chlorine bleach afterward.

For puppy chewing, nothing beats a diningroom chair leg.
no no no!!! Those are new chairs   how about the living room chair instead? that's old!!!
If puppy is anything like my Toby (now at the bridge) was he prefered chewing the plaster of the hall wall.
Like a say I am A Clorox Freak!!!!! Did you know that Clorox bleach will kill the aids virus on contact..... It is what is used to clean all equpment in meat markets. There had better be a vat of bleach adn water in the kitchen area of a restraunt when inspected by the health dept or they are written up. When in dought run it thru a mild soluntion of bleach and water....You can do that with meat and fruits and veggies....Did you know that much of the fruits and veggies we get from South America is irrigated with sewer water? Guess where E-coli comes from? So being a vegatarian I run everything I eat and what the Babies eat with Clorox and water.... I would not put any of the bones in the microwave for any lenght of time.......Heat breeds bacteria..... Just My Opinion......Kaye Second Chance OES Rescue

Well, no wonder you are a vegetarian!

(sorry, I know your brain was working faster than your fingers. Those two sentences shouldn't follow one another.)

Kaye,

Don't you worry about getting sick from the chemicals in Clorox (you and the dogs)? If Annie just licks the floor after being cleaned with Orange Glow or Mineral Oil she pukes.

This is good information. I didn't know that if they were raw they wouldn't splinter. You said you freeze them first. When you take it out of the freezer how long until you give it to your dog? I gave Hannah raw turkey before and she wouldn't touch it. Do you think she'd take a raw frozen bone? I would love to find a solution to keeping her teeth healthy.

Are the chicken wings safe to give them? What about the size and sharpness of the bones? I'm open to try. I just want to make sure I'm clear so I don't hurt my dog.

Copy (Copper) seems to prefer his bones with dirt on them.

Thanks for the info.
I give marrow bones frozen right out of the freezer. My dogs love them frozen solid. Chummie actually does a little marrow bone hoppity dance. :D

You don't use the Clorox full strenght when using on food.....I use a mixture of about 1/10 clorox.........Then you wash it.........Sheepie Hugs, Kaye
I let my bones defrost a bit before giving to the dogs. That's just what I do.
