Choking

I noticed that Merlin (now 4 and a half months old) chokes easily. He could be running around or down the steps, and he would choke, causing him to cough. Usually a loud cough seems to get rid of the problem. Does anyone know what is wrong?

Check his bowel movements and see how much hair is in them. Dogs can over-groom themselves and develop hairballs of a sort. Usually you will need to give them more fiber in their diet and try to brush their loose hair out more often.
The other thing that causes coughs here in the STATES is heart worms. Especially after exercise. You would have to call your vet and ask if that is a problem in Singapore. Also check if it could be another parasite. Looking at Merlin's Bowel Movements (BM's) can sometimes reveal if he has tapeworms, hook worms or some other intestinal parasite.

It could be something as innocent as he is getting into somebody's stuffed animals and that acrylic stuffing is sticking to his tongue. Abbi does that sometimes. She will get that "stuffing" stuff all over her tongue and start choking.
You will need to observe and find out it it could be something he is palaying with, ingesting, or if the choking only occurs after exercise. Dogs choke for the same reasons as humans sometimes. Sometimes they just need a drink.
Good luck and let us know if you figure out what it is!
