MynieMe -- Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Well, we went back to the vet today, as Mynie's digestive problems are back. No parasites, so we are looking at Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Too many months of fighting off parasites and just not having the immune system to stay healthy. :(

I also had her hips x rayed because her gait seems to be off. I told my mom and my girlfriend before I went that I know there is something 'missing' in her hips. On that, I was right too, she has no socket for her hip to rest in. We are looking at several different types of treatment (surgeries to no surgery etc) for her.

I feel so bad for her, she's 10 MONTHS OLD!!!!!

This poor baby has had such a hard life from the get go, and she's been such a wonderful loving trooper........ :(

When we put the x rays up on the board, another thing was very obvious too, she had a very small liver, and it is pushed up under her stomach, so that could be causing a lot of her problems too....... my poor baby laid at my feet while we talked, resting, listening........ what a life to have -- at least she's been spoiled for 6 months of her life that she's been here with me ........

Mynie's the result of a puppy mill -- poorly bred, bad conditions, bad situation....... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, I am just glad that she's here with me and can be spoiled and loved until it's time for her to cross that Rainbow Bridge..... which I hope is not too soon, but we aren't given much hope by her doctors ........

Sorry to be venting, I am just so sad for her, and I feel so bad for her and I know that she has had it better here, but this poor girl........ I wish she could have had a great life herding and playing and be a sheepie ....... she just lays around to be loved more than anything ..... my poor baby girl .......

Oh no. I'm so sorry about your puppy's health. Lots of love from us. XOXOXOXO
I'm so sorry your family and your pup are going through this. :(
I hope the vet can give a better prognosis and has some ideas to allow her to have a good quality of life for a long time :)
So sad. If only the people who run these puppy mills could think past the coins in their pockets to what they're sentencing these poor darlings to. Breaks my heart.
I know you must be very sad. Have you had any blood tests to see how her liver is functioning? That may be the most important challenge right now... that and her tummy troubles. I have heard people talk about "Milk Thistle" helping the liver... I'm not sure if it's actually beneficial but you might ask your vet for his or her opinion.

As for the hip dysplasia, I just wanted to share our experience with a disease we had no experience with. We adopted a sheepie that we knew had hip dysplasia in September of last year. We later found we are her 3rd family in about 10 months and she had spent a month at a shelter in New Jersey. I recently found that a dog that appears to be her brother came from a pet store. http://www.pomeroys.com/EmmaDarby/Page30.htm She was about 10 1/2 months old when she arrived. We were ready to jump right into surgery but Grannie Annie with NEOESR recommended she settle in our pack first. Part of our adoption agreement states that we will have what is called an FHO should it ever be needed. We immediately had her assessed for a surgery called a TPO because it would give her the absolute best chance... she did not qualify because of bone changes had already taken place and had been apparent in her x-rays at 9 months old. We were very saddened by the news.

Keeping the muscles in condition is important for a dog with HD. Panda had been kept in a drying cage during the days while at work with her previous owner so her muscle tone was not very good. She would get tripped up over her own feet. After months of short play periods in the backyard with the other girls she is doing well... she's able to jump up on the couch, bed  She runs and plays with the other girls. The very best exercise for a dog with HD is swimming because it takes the weight off the joints while exercising the muscles.

Panda's gait is also off... it looks like her hind feet are too close together and she has a bunny hop run. BUT we have her on one adult buffered aspirin in the morning and 2 Cosequin DS per day... that's it. If your baby has liver problems, you need to see if she can handle medications, even over the counter meds.

As time went by Panda got stronger and we have decided that surgery is not needed at this time. Now the rescue will assist us with payment of the surgery as part of our agreement but she just does not need it... at least not now. Our vet had said that surgery may actually never be necessary even though her x-rays are horrible- http://www.pomeroys.com/EmmaDarby/MadisonXray.jpg. A surgeon down at Michigan State University said the x-rays are of course considered but it all depends upon how the dog responds to this disease.

Mynie is a beautiful girl and she is very lucky to have someone who loves her dearly and is trying to make her life the best it can be. Wishing you and Mynie the very best. Please keep us posted on how she's doing.

Mynie has had several tests, TLI's were normal, her white cell count was low, red cells were high, her liver enzymes show as normal, but if her liver's as small as we think, that could make it look normal, as it's over making enzymes ........ too low making it appear normal so to say.....

I just got off the phone with the vet, they are talking total hip replacement or an FHO, because there is no socket there at all.

So, we are breathing it in, and mulling over what to do, I also told my vet about Iga, so he is going to look back over all the tests we've done and see if we can cross reference anything......

We are all so sad because she is so young ......

On a good note, she must be feeling a bit better, she went and helped herself to a snack in the kitty litter box 8O
I'm so sorry to hear about Mynie. I can certainly relate to the tummy stuff, as Oscar has had one issue after another beginning from the minute he joined us at ten weeks of age. After multiple food changes, fecal sample tests, bouts of giardia, and blood tests, plus a maldigestion panel, he finally had an endoscopy. He has Inflammatory Bowel Disease of the small intestine. I know that your options are limited due to potential liver issues with Mynie, but if you want to talk at all, please PM me. Our previous OES, Quincy, had elbow dysplasia, and successfully underwent surgery at 1 1/2 years of age, but he didn't have all of the other issues that poor Mynie faces.

We are sending our love and hugs to Mynie, and tell her no more "kitty treats"!
I'm so sorry for you. But this breed can bring so much happiness to your heat, that even if she's a short timer, she will live with you for many years. For all their work, they are truly special. She sounds light a very sweet girl. I hope you have a long time together.

So sorry to hear about Mynie's problems. Having a 10 mos old OES myself, I can imagine how hard it would be to go through this. We're hoping that things turn out ok.
Sending hugs for Mynie, hope all works out alright.
A huge hug to you and Mynie! This must be so hard...
Lots of sympathy from here too. I hope you have good news for sweet Mynie soon. . . 6Girls story about Panda gives cause for hope. . .

Best,

Val
I'm sorry to hear about Mynie's health. It is very sad to hear she's going through so much for being so young.

I'm am curious how they are diagnosing Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)? Irritable Bowel Syndrome is stress related. Our 2 yr old recently got diagnosed with Inflamatory Bowel Disease (IBD) which means that his intestines don't absorb & move his food properly. They do bloodwork to check the Eosinophil levels to find out how elevated they are. Treatment is a prescription dog food (in severe cases prednisone is used). We use Purina HA which is working well.
**Update**

Mynie's bout for this time is cleared up. We will be starting her on Predosone on Friday to see if this helps. And, it is Inflamatory Bowel Disease, I was thinking uprights for a minute (whoops). My mind was not doing good last week. We have run the blood work and everything short of going in and doing the endoscopy. We are concerned about doing that with how bad her immune system is. She is doing much better this week, but still isn't completely herself. Her vet calls almost every day to check on her..... he's a great guy! We are waiting to see if this new med will keep the bouts of problems down.... but it's too early to tell on anything ..... Thank you for all of the thoughts and wishes and sheepie hugs and kisses -- Mynie loves the attention! :D
Thanks so much for the update on your baby. I hope the steroids will help her feel better real soon. Hugs to her! :D
Oh no that is so sad to here you would think that after all she has been through she could catch a double break finding you and getting her health in order.
Poor Mynie,

She is one brave girl. I am so glad that she is so lucky to have found you and that you are so committed to helping her. Love her big pink nose and hat. I really hope that things get better for her ASAP.
Just got off the phone with the vet, we are now looking at a liver shunt. So we are going to do a test in the next couple of days to see if this could be her issue. (The prednosone did nothing for her)

:(
I'm sorry Kirstin... a vet in Texas thought Kaytee had this at 6-10 weeks of age. There are some informative articles on liver shunts at these addresses-

http://www.vetsurgerycentral.com/pss.htm
http://www.vet.utk.edu/clinical/sacs/shunt/faq.shtml
http://www.upei.ca/~cidd/Diseases/cardi ... 0shunt.htm
http://www.vetinfo4dogs.com/dshunt.html#Liver%20Shunt

The University of Tennessee website indicated a need for a lower protein diet like possibly Hills L/D... sites also mentioned a bile acid test as part of the diagnosis.

Please keep us posted on how Mynie's doing and what the tests determine. I know how difficult this is for you and your family.
Jaci
That poor sweet girl.I'm sorry I can't offer anything medically, but she is certainly lucky to have you! Best of luck to you and Mynie.
We are doing a UA this morning, blood work and the bile acids test. I took her to the groomer yesterday, so I need the post the pictures of her all nice and clean!!

We should know a little bit more by this afternoon!

Thank you everyone

Kirstin & Co
Poor little Mynie! Kirstin, Mynie is so lucky that you saved her and gave her a new life. I hope your wonderful vet finds a way to make her 100%!

Sue
Oh! She's gorgeous! :o

It was hard to tell how beautiful she is with her hair
all mooshed down with that cute hat on her head. :D

She truly is fortunate to have a loving family. I hope you get some real good info on how best to help her. Hugs to you all.
Mynie looks wonderful in her pictures :!: :!:

It really looks like she has no eyes in those first few. I think the pink in her nose just makes her look so cute.

Amanda
She looks soooo pretty!! :D
Just sending wishes that mynie is going to be Ok and you can find what the problem is with her. She is looking so lovely, love the new piccy of her in your avatar

Thinking of you and mynie (((Hugs)))
What a lot to go through for such a little girl - she is very brave and very good!!! We send lots of love and hugs your way - good luck with everything!
Any news yet?
I am so sorry that Mynie is having so many trouble.
:) Hugs and kises to you and Mynie. We'll keep our fingers crossed for you both!
Anxiously waiting to hear that Mynie is OK.
We got the results back on both the bile acids test and the UA. The UA was completely normal (we were hoping to find crystals, no such luck -- it would have explained the shunt a little more) and her bile acids test was within the normal range as well.

This is SO frustrating! I hope we get this cleared up soon! We are getting ready to start her on some new test medication, our last hope is to go in for a biopsy -- which we may have to do sooner than we think.

Thank you for all the thoughts .............

Mynie (who does clean up rather nicely!)
Hi,

I've been catching up on post this evening and am very sorry I hadn't posted earlier. I was sure I had but perhaps I neglected to hit the submit button. I'll be keeping Mynie in my thoughts and prayers. She's a little girl that life has not been fair to until she met you. It's so obvious she was meant to be in your home and recieve all the love and attention she so deserved. I wish you all the best, I can only imagine the heartbreak you feel at seeing so many medical woes with this little one...you realize you are her angels. I'll be thinking of you! My boys are sending sloppy sheepie kisses her way.

Marianne and the boys
I also somehow missed this thread. My heart goes out to you, Kirstin, and Mynie. It is so frustrating when our babies are sick and the vets can't find out why.

As for the hip dysplasia, my heart especially hurts for you on this one. My Drez also has it, and probably had it a LOT earlier than we discovered it. She had an FHO done on her right hip when she was 11 yrs 3 mos old. We won't have her left hip done because of her age and because her right hip wouldn't be strong enough to support her in recuperation. So all things considered, she's doing okay. We're just taking it day by day.

Exercise is key. Swimming is the absolute best. When we take the cover off the pool in the spring, Drez is waiting right there, wanting to jump right in. She LOVES it.

Mynie is such a beautiful girl! I hope things get better for her soon.

Chris
So ...... we rewormed (just in case of whipworms, on day 2 of 3 -- Panacur), are giving her b vitamin shots once a week for 3 weeks and have her on Metronitizol (I know bad spelling, but I am too lazy to get the bottle! ) for 10 days, reworm in 12 days and then start her on tylosin to see if that is helpful.

So far, it has kept her from having horrendous accidents in the house, there comes a time when you wish your whole house was linoleum -- 8O and the smell, good lord! It does make a grown woman cry!!!

Her appetite has decreased a bit, she used to act starving all the time (the food would go right through her) and now she is actually

taking her time to eat! 8O

I'll keep ya'all posted on this little one, she sure is a fighter, I just wish I could give her the one up on this!!!!!!
Sounds promising, keeping fingers, toes and the girls are keeping all there paws crossed my Mynie. :D She is one tough cookie  :hearts:

Yes sometimes you do wish for a house that has Linoleum all over the floor, hope she settles down for you soon XX ((Hugs))
I hope she's feeling better soon.....

Having no carpet is the one thing that made my girls being sick last week a little easier. If only cleaning the dogs up were as easy as cleaning linoleum floors. I'm still trying to get mats out that resulted from that mess.
What a tough little girl Mynie has been and shows such a strenght of character...she's one of the special ones.

My boys think she's the greatest! :hearts:

Marianne and the boys
Glad to hear that Mynie is starting to feel better. She's really a fighter, that one. Strong girl!

I know how awful it is to feel like your house will never be clean or smell good again. Bless your heart!
