Update- Mama says I got IgA deficiency

Mama thought I should write since they found out what's wrong...

I was told today that I have something called IgA deficiency. It's an immune system problem where 1 of the 3 globulins is too low... my other 2 are slightly higher than normal. It affects the mucosal membranes causing infections and recurring infections of the nose, throat, lungs, intestinal tract, urinary tract, skin, etc. There is no cure for this so mama is going to write to Dr. Dodds to see if she can schedule a consultation (if she even has time for things like this) to see if there is anything that can be done to keep me the healthiest I can possibly be.

I wanted to say thanks to everyone for being so nice and tolerating my mama  while we waited for results.
Love~

(Lots of big words for such a little sheepie  )

Kaytee - so glad you've been diagnosed now. I do hope that Dr. Dodds will respond to your mom's inquiry and give her information on how to keep you as healthy as possible! You're a very special little girl and we want you feeling better quickly!
oHHH... Sweet Kaytee, I'm so sorry to hear about your condition! I hope your doctor can help you to feel better soon, and stay better!!!
Oh, Kaytee, I'm so sorry to hear this! But I know your mama will do everything in her power to keep you as healthy as possible! Just keep giving Mama lots of sheepie kisses as thanks!

Amanda
I hope she feels better soon. I wonder if you can keep her on a small dose of antibiotics to ward off infections?

Dr. Dodds said...

"...Yes, she has deficiency of secretary immunity. This usually gets less clinically significant as dogs pass adolescence, BUT, as an (OES) she has very high risk for autoimmune thyroiditis -- which, if present would further compromize her immune system..."

That sounds very encouraging to me :D And even if she ends up with low thyroid, a simple pill twice a day for life will correct it.

She says that Kaytee may be more prone to UTIs too so we'll test her urine with those simple test stips occasionally so we can treat any infection sooner. She also said that IgA deficiency has been linked to other autoimmune conditions... when I asked about Cosequin DS (I had read that arthritis could also be a problem with this deficiency) she said it has antiplatelet properties and we should try Glycoflex instead.

I'm impressed and very thankful for her advice. I had heard about Dr. Dodds for a couple of years but never had a need to seek her help. We will be asking our vet to send the annual blood work to Hemopet http://hemopet.com/services.html for testing this year. We've got 3 girls in our pack that have already been diagnosed with low thyroid. That seems like such a high number. 8O

That's good news jaclin that it can be treated. I have never heard of it, so it has been interesting to read what IgA deficiency is. You learn something here everyday. Again send Kaytee our love and glad she is going to be alright. :D
Hi Jaclin,

We all sending big hugs Kaytee's way and the boys are sending big sloppy sheepie kisses her way.

My previous OES (Shaggy) had immune deficiency thrombocytopenia which in some ways is similar to Kaytees condition as it too is a disorder of the immune system. I was one of the lucky ones as she went on to live until the age of 15. In order to try to help others who come across this condition I recently asked my vet to photocopy all of Shaggy's medical records so as I can refresh my memory and would be willing to share or send anything that can be of help to anyone.

You're in our thoughts.

Jaclin,

How is Kaytee doing now? Much better, I hope.
Good Morning Holly-
I saw you were on bright and early :)

Kaytee is doing just fine now... back to her little obnoxious self (thank goodness). Thanks so much for asking. How are you, Daisy and the boys doing? I've been thinking about Daisy and hope she's finding happiness again. Hugs to her!

Isn't it funny how happy we are when they return to that behavior :) I'm fine and Daisy is getting there, she's starting to bark at everything again  Never thought I'd be happy to hear that!
