those hilarious olympics

did anyone watch the opening ceremonies?

i laughed my head off. allow me to elaborate.

did you listen to the commentator? he was KILLING me all night.....the opening ceremonies are the start of something fantastic, a wondrous occasion marking thousands of years of gentlemen's (and ladies') games. the whole time, this guy was intent on making us cry aparently.

bosnia/herzegova makes an entrance "it's sad to think that most of these atheletes only know serbia as a pockmarked war-zone"

iran "iran's new president has vowed to destroy israel"

and other gems.

it bugs me out that there is no happy event when the news media is involved. but this was just funny....

then they had the speech given by yoko ono.......

the world gets funnier and funnier i swear.

If I hear "Well, that's Bode being Bode" one more time...

precisely! the olympics are hilarious
I definitely could do without all the hype the media attaches to the athletes... Yeah I feel really bad for Michelle Kwan, because she can't compete now, and she'll never get gold, but that doesn't mean it should be treated like the earth is coming apart!

I get far more enjoyment out of watching the athletes compete who really, truly love what they're doing. Did anyone see the expression on Shawn White's (AKA "the flying Tomato" our snowboarder who won gold) face as he watched the opening ceremonies... He was just loving being there! It was awesome... Esp. when contrasted w/ Mr. Bode, who pretty much just sat and sneered at everything... I'll take genuine delight over pretentious self-absorption any day!
Don't forget Ed___ NBC was showing the promos before
the commercials about Michelle Khan s
dashing hope for an Olympic metal.

The network advised
Michelle has just left due to her injury.

Don't feel bad, the coverage is so poor not even the NBC
directors/staff are watching their own Olympic updates!

* Go to commercial :)

As to the commentary during the opening, next time just
please play the music and let us enjoy it free from
the MC's and their political comments.

NBC has the poorest coverage I've seen, its a
dishonor to the athletes after their years of hard work.

i felt worse that she had her picture plasterred all over the news with the wonderful headline "penetrating groin injury"

how embarassing.

No, how hilarious. Stay on topic.
And, it really bothers me that NBC has decided to call it Torino. It is Turin to us English speaking people (which is who the NBC people are broadcasting for). In American media (journalism) we use the Anglicized version of the city's name. It is the Shroud of Turin, not the Shroud of Torino. I don't recall them broadcasting from Seoul using the Korean word for their city, or Muscovy for Moscow...
Yet we complain when Spanish Broadcasters call it "Nueve York"...

I have always wondered why we don't call places by their local names when there is not an overwhelming precedent for anglicizing
You complain when Spanish broadcasters call is Nuevo York? Do you watch the Spanish news?

We call it by the English name because that's what 'we' know it as. I'm sure it is because of the longstanding megalomaniac mindset of the English cum Americans that everything should be done to 'our' standards...We speak English here and the English way to say things are different than in other countries (duh). So in English, the country's name is Italy, but the Italians (in Italian) call it Italia. That is why we generally call locations by their English version rather than local version.

Wow, what I bad explanation!
I've always thought we should just call EVERYTHING by the name the locals give it... So Italia for Italy, Deutschland for Germany... If that is what the locals call their country, state, city, whatever, why is it not good enough for the rest of us??? But Karen's opinion does not international naming laws make, sooo... oh well!!!
I think it was Saturday when they were showing the snowboarding qualifying, one of the boys slipped and hit the top of the snowboarding track and the announcer laughed a hardy laugh for all to hear.
Shame Shame on him.
