Dog houses

Anyone know of a good website to buy a Sheepie sized dog house? We're looking to fix Jasper up a cooler spot in the yard since we plan on spending a lot of time outside this summer with him. :) TIA!

Oh, I'm up for store suggestions also, but the only stores we have around here in a 45 minute drive are Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Sears, Lowes, and a co-op (farming supply store).

Oh and what I really want to know is should I get a large or an extra-large? Jasper is around 75 pounds.

Sorry - me again :) This is the one my husband likes, but do you think it will be okay for Jasper? It says up to 75 pounds, and he's just a couple of pounds under that. How much bigger will he get, if any? He just turned a year old on Dec. 4th. It's the Cedar Cabin Dog House.

That one's really cute, Gail. It looks like it'd be big enough for Jasper. :D
Hmmm...the link didn't work for me. Do you think he'll stay in a doggie house? I'm thinking about a big tree for shade might be better!
We got pandas dog house at Walmart...its green base and taupe roof...insulated poly....easy to clean..the roof comes off..you can put a dog door on it too if you want...they came in three sizes, we got panda the medium...just perfect for her...but she is kinda sheepie small....the large one looked huge...but for 2 summers it has held up in the extreme heat!!!!
Gail, you can have ours if you want to come up to VA and get it... :) We never use it--it was custom built by the previous owner for their choco lab...

That's a beautiful house!!! Jasper would think he was a king - lol
It matches our house...the vinyl is the same color and everything

Barney doesn't use it though!
We have the same sort of Dog House, with the little verandah out the front. It was originally the Kids Cubby House, sooo now a day Kennel for the Girls as the boys outgrew it. LOL
Steph, I would make a little fort out that house for myself if I were you. :)
Ooooh, all the possibilities! And it is wired for electricity...so I could make it my weekend retreat where I go when I need to escape from it all...
ooohhh you could a/c it...if panda had a cooled dog house like that, think of all the entertaining she could do 8O
That house is so cool! I love it! LOL
How about building one. My husband is NOT a carpentar, but together we managed to build a pretty good house.

Made out of plywood, and 2x4, and 1x2's, a couple hinges for the roof so we can clean it out. The door is on the side, 3/4 covered, so they can curl up away from the door, a slanted roof for run off....built off the ground a little for added warmth, and then insulated. Took us one day.
I built one many years ago. 3'x4' with gabled roof, cedar lined with 2" insulation sides, top and bottom, since then applied aluminum siding. My collies loved it. Barney and Maggie would rather lay under a shade tree. They don't use it. If you get one, that doesn't mean the dog will use it.
Hmm...I'm not sure Jason could build him a house that wouldn't fall apart, or it'd be like the boys train table. He wanted to build it to save money, so I said fine. He bought the highest quality wood, etc.. anyway his "saving money" idea ended up costing over $500 just for the train table!! That was one expensive Christmas, because I had budgeted like $150 for the table since that's what they cost at TRU! lol

As far as trees, in the back, we just have pine trees. They are getting cut down this summer. There's about a dozen of them lined up right behind the house, bordering the fence. I've always been uncomfortable with them. We live in an area with a lot of tornadoes, ice storms snap pine trees, strong winds with severe storms, heck, Katrina was still hurricane strength when she came through here. Those trees have always scared me, because they could very easily fall on our house. They're only about 10' from the house, but they're 20+' tall.

When we take Jasper to my parent's house and he plays with my brother's dog, Jasper sneaks into his house when he gets tired/hot, so that's why I'm thinking he'll use one. I hope he will anyway. :)
Sounds like he'll like it then. Try to get one that's insulated, otherwise locate it in a shady area or build a platform above it. That will extend out in front of the entrance like a porch to keep the rain out. If you get one with a wooden bottom, place it up on blocks or bricks so the wood doesn't rot.

That's funny, Gail! My dad can build anything and has done so for years with our "home projects". (Usually much cheaper than buying it.) However, we still have a running joke in the family - give him a truck load of lumber and six weeks and he can build you a bird house.
Hello, I have been searching high and low for a reasonably priced wooden doghouse when I came upon your site. I noticed that someone said they would give away their doghouse in Virginia. I live in Virginia and would be more than willing and able to come and give your doghouse a new home. I would even be willing to pay for it. My dogs have to stay in the back yard during the day while I work (teacher). If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate your help. I don't have a sheepdog, but do have two little furry pups that would also greatly appreciate your help. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this. Please feel free to email me directly at chrissycates@hotmail.com
