Snoopy and Johnny Walker

I mentioned on another post that Snoopy was a gift from my brother on my tenth birthday. He was a Samoyed/Lab - looked exactly like a Samoyed, even down to his beautiful tail, but had black blotches on his coat.

Two years later,Mama Puss aka Johnny Walker was a stray pregnant kitty my sister and I found in a back alley. At around this time my dad had left the family home and my mother worked long hours and never complained about the rescues my sister and I started to bring home. We ended up with 13 cats and 2 dogs. My sister and I both had babysitting jobs and paid for all the upkeep of the animals. I was 12 and my sister 14, yet we paid for all the neutering, immunizations and food for them all.

Unlike all the other animals in the household or even since, the relationship between Snoopy and Mama Puss was extroidinary between this very dominant male dog and the tiny small framed cat that had no sense of balance. She was disabled and unable to walk properly. Years later I found out she probably had encephalitis at birth which caused her disability.

In fact she hopped like a kangaroo much to the amusement of anyone that came into contact with her. Especially if she was startled she bounced high in the air and hopped in all directions. When she went down stairs, it was done in a unique way, much like a drunken sailor. When she walked it was a weaving kind of walk. In fact, everyone in the neighborhood called her Johnny Walker after the rum. At times she would tumble down the last remaining steps...Snoopy would race to her side and frantically lick her.

When she gave birth to her kittens and temporarily left the box for short periods to eat or for her toilet duties. Snoopy would immediately jump in the box and become surrogate mom to the tiny babies. It was the only time I hadn't seen Snoopy accompany her down the stairs.

Mama Puss was unable to jump on fences or climb trees and always stayed close to home as a result. Indoors or the backyard was her domain. One day my brothers friend arrived with his dog and I was home alone with the animals. He just opened the back gate and entered. I always was a bit frightened of this guy who was about 5 years older than me. He'd always say horrible stuff to me out of earshot of my brother.

The little kitties(whom were about 7 wks at that time) were all outside in the backyard with me. His dog immediately went after the kittens and Mama Puss bravely tried to defend them. Snoopy raced outside and started fighting with the dog. My brothers friend kicked at Snoopy and grabbed hold of my dog and tried shoving him out of the yard and I was yelling at him to let go. Suddenly Mama Puss hopped in her kangaroo way and landed on the other dogs back. The dog howling and she held on as if she was riding a bucking bronco. My brothers friend let go of Snoopy as he tried to help his dog.Together Mama Puss and Snoopy beat off the attacker and both the teen and his dog made a hasty retreat.

In their old age Mama Puss aka Johnny Walker and Snoopy were inseperable. As he became more infirm due to arthritis she gently cuddled with him and groomed him. All the gazillion animals I've had since have never recaptured the closeness of these two unlikey lifelong friends.

When Snoopy died at age 17, Mama Puss although healthy at the time, passed away within 2 wks of him.

That is such an incredible story!!!!
Thanks Colleen!

I just read a story the other day in which the author was able to remember his childhood by the pets he had at various ages. This occurred aprox 30 years ago (dating myself here) but it was like it happened yesterday. The old timers in my mom's neighborhood still remember Snoopy and Johnny Walker as the two of them were that memorable.

I always love your stories, Marianne! Thanks for sharing another memory with us. :D
ahh - I love your stories.
Thanks everyone!

Like what often happens in my life..weird indiosyncredicity..sp? My girlfriend since the second grade just called me this evening! She's the best friend, I mentioned visiting on my post, when I came across the old man! We spent hours reminicing about the antics and those of my pets when we were kids.

I have the ability to remember details of my childhood days by which pet I had at what ages. Ha ha! :D I recently attended my high school reunion a few weeks back and the most memorable thing people remembered was my love of kids and animals. Except for the fact that my birthday suit now has more wrinkles.. I'm basically the same.

Mandy! where the heck is my smoovah?(Inside joke)

That's really cool Marianne.

I like Mama Puss better than Johnny Walker - geez, what names!

We had a mutt named Snoopy growing up, cocker spaniel collie mix .
Hi Verveup

I think when we were kids everyone had a dog named Snoopy! After Charlie Brown's dog. Names are funny aren't they? Especially when we named our pets as kids or now..when our children name them. LOL
Names are so fun! My mom and Step-Loogan (that's what I call him) have Samual L. Dogson...that's one of my favorites!

My girlfriend is a groomer so she gets to meet alot there is also Michael J Dog in Fort St John, BC!!!

How about this for fun...what is your "stage" name?

Mine is Raggs Woodlawn...ewwwwwwww

You take the name of your first pet for the first name and the name of the street you lived on when you were growing up...and viola! How does it look in lights????

I always find these funny!!!
Mine is Pepper Lincoln. We did this at work the one day, it was a slow day, and after we figured out my name I got phone calls for Pepper Lincoln for a week. Grrr, cops!
I lived in 10 houses by the time I graduated high school...which street would I choose!
