anxiously awaiting

Hello everyone,
Please bare with me as this is my first time in a chat room! My husband and I are anxiously awaiting the arrival of a new puppy on March 22nd. We had recently lost our beloved German Shepherd "Winston" after only four short years and decided we should get a new puppy. I have always dreamed of having an Old English Sheepdog since Grade 1-2 when we had to read "Mr. Muggs" (who was an OES) in school- I fell in love with that dog. My husband and I searched on the internet for a breed that would be great for us and have decided on the OES. We can't wait to get him. He is being shipped from Edmonton to Toronto where we will pick him up. We live only about 4 hours from Toronto. I am sure I will be on this website a lot - in need of advice and information. Thanks for listening!

Hello Paulette and welcome to the OES forum! First off, let me say how sorry I am that you have lost your Winston. It is sad that he had such a short life. My husband grew up with German Shepards and loves the breed very much. We thought about that breed for awhile before we had children. After children we searched for a little over a year before deciding between two breeds. The Newfoundland and the OES, I knew I wasn't really up for a dog that threw slobber all over the walls when it shook and so we decided on the OES. We have had great fun so far with Jack and Annabelle, and are looking forward to watching them grow up!
This will be a great place for advice and to share your stories. We will look forward to hearing all about your sheepie when he gets here. Does he have a name yet? Stormi :D
Hi Paulette,

Congrats on getting your new puppy! We as well are considering getting our first family dog - we have 2 preschoolers - (it's now btw an OES or a Tibetan Terrier). We are off to see a TT today in our 'round one' of deciding. We don't know anyone with an OES either, so that trip comes next..
Just wondering - we live in Kingston ON - where are you located?
Where is your puppy coming from in Edmonton, and why didn't you go with an ONtario breeder?

Have a great day!

Hi again,
We have named him Cooper (as in Mini Cooper - car from England). My husband is a car fanatic and he came up with this name and I loved it! We found out about Cooper by going through the Canadian Kennel Club. I contacted them about breeders of OES and she gave me a list throughout Canada. We live in a little town on the outskirts of Windsor (border city to Detroit) and the closest breeder that I saw on the list was a lady from Barrie. I called her and she wouldn't be having any puppies until summer and we didn't want to wait but she said she co-owned a dog from Edmonton and they just had puppies and she thought one was available, so I called Edmonton and like I said he will be arriving on March 22nd. I haven't even seen a picture of him yet but they are supposed to be emailing me shortly with some. I can't wait. Thanks for the replies. Have a great day!

Hi,

Welcome to the forum! This place is fantastic for conversing about all sorts of things regarding medical or behavioral problems (minor ones with our furbabies, of course) that members have come across. I'm sure you're going to love it here.

Glad to have you join us!

The forum is better than a chat room because you can just type your message and then come back when you have time and read all of the answers.
Welcome aboard!
Make sure to take plenty of photos!
Paulette,

Congrats on your "soon to be" new arrival!

I am the proud owner of Pithy, a 2 year old OES with lots of spirit!! She brings joy to my life daily!! I, too, wanted an OES since I was a little girl, ever since watching "The Shaggy Dog." It was only to our benefit to find out that these wonderful creatures are great with children, but they do nip when running beside kids, due to the fact that they are herders!! So, be sure to curtail that activity immediately!!

My friend, who is also from Canada, always calls my Pithy, "Mr. Muggs." I had never even heard of these childrens' books until she brought them up! I thought it was neat that you too recall this part of your childhood! I have come to the conclusion that this must be a Canada based curriculum, but intend to find these books simply out of curiousity!!
