Walks and poopies

When I go for walks with Merlin ( my male OES, a little over a year ) he poops Several times, besides having to pick up it and carry it until a trashcan comes along there is something else that bugs me. They start out normal, firm, regular and all that, but as the walk continues his poop gets softer and softer to the point where I can't pick it up and it's practically diarrhea. This happens probably about 99% of the time when we go for walks. When at home they're always normal, it's just when we walk. Should I ask my vet about it, or does this happen to others too? Is it just that he's so excited and it does something to his bowels or what? Comments, suggestions????

You may want to think about changing food, however, with that said, Pooh usually poops once....sometimes twice. The second one always ends up a little loose. Is you guy anxious? Pooh alway poops again after a car ride and it's always very loose.

How many times is several? Is is every walk? He may be trying so hard to clear himself out that he's causing himself to make diarrhea? When you say at home, do you mean his normal bathroom walk and for a walk are you tlaking about a great distance?
What are you feeding your dog?
Wow!!! That sucks!!! :(

It really sounds like a stress thing. Does Merlin seem stressed? Are there other dogs or distractions that seem to bother him?
Just a guess: It's kind of does sound like he's nervous about potty and is trying to empty out before going back inside. At just over a year, perhaps it may be just a phase? Is he free feeding and grazing all the time, or does he get one or two large meals?

Perhaps adding bran to the diet to help bind things and firm up the stools.
I know that in the human, the large intestine is responsible for recycling water from the inside and putting it back into the body. The longer the stool is in the large bowel, the drier and harder it gets. I would guess the same is true for the dog.

Just looking for clues...
I have the same exact problem with Frank. I can easily get him to poop before we leave. Within the first 3 blocks of our walk he has loose stools, and to make matters worse, he doesn't squat down far enough...you get the picture. I have to carry spare paper towels with me or it ends up all over his legs. It's always fun wiping him when people are walking by

I have changed his diet but this has not changed anything. I always thought it was irritable bowel syndrome as he does the same thing as soon as he gets out of the car. It's just that he is either having excitement or anxiety. Unfortunately, the vet hasn't been helpful on recommendations either. Frank is 2 now and we've been going through this since he was a puppy. Just one of those things you might need to workaround.

On the other hand, Frank just got diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Disease and he'll be going on an expensive prescription diet which will change the way he digests food. I'll let you know if that makes any difference!
boo's the same ive heard alot of people mention this about there dogs so i dont think its anything to worry about
Ditto for Barney, I switched to a lamb and rice diet and it seems to help, but I think Ron's explanation makes the most sense on the mechanics. I also notice that stress factor seems to aggravate it. Barney is just going through the transition from riding with me in the cab of my pickup to travelling in a kennel in the bed (the bed is covered with a fiberglass shell with plenty of ventilation). The kennels (one for Barney, one for Maggie) are secured so they can't move and its a much safer method of travel but when I let them out he has to empty himself and the last part is very loose. While it may be "normal" as far as the dog is concerned, it sure is h...to clean up.

Incidentally I tried Ron's rice water from a previous post on this subject - it didn't help, and I was eating rice pudding for a week. :D
Every time we go to the dog park Bolsey runs around for a bit then does his job. It always starts out firm and finishes loose. I always assumed it was nerves, because at home it is always firm to the end.
He eats Large Breed Purina Puppy Chow yet. I have a 7 month old girl around too and Merlin could stand to gain a couple pounds so he's still on puppy food. He never acts nervous, just very excited - except bikers or skateboarders, things with wheels (except cars) he gets a little upset when they go by but other than that he has a great time. oh and he eats 1 or 2 larger/main meals and he can graze during the day, but he usually doesn't. I'm glad to know other people have the same issue, or something very similar anyway. Merlin isn't that way about cars, just the walks. Oh and Verveup - it sounds like your walks are a whole load of pleasantness :)
The same thing happens with Barney. I'll get him to go just before our walk (hoping that will take care of everything so we won't have to pick anything up on the walk), then we have a designated poop zone on the walk and he goes there and the poops are fine (about 3 blocks from home), and then if we decide the go the long route he'll usually poop again, but that's usually pretty runny and not very much. I just figure he's gotten pretty much everything out but still feels the need to so tries to find something in there to get out. I'm not worried about it. Everything is fine at home...
Izzie does the same thing. It is as if she wants to make sure that she gets it all out before we go back inside. I don't have a yard...therefore she gets long walks everyday. So this is a daily occurence. Sometimes the second poop is softer than others. On the plus side...she has had this habit since we got her at 8 weeks...so she has never pooped inside.

Puppy Chow is generally thought to be a very poor quality food. Some of the purina foods are not bad, like Pro Plan, but puppy chow and dog chow from purina are at the bottom of the scale for that brand I believe.
I really think you would notice a difference if you switched (gradually of course) to a higher quality food.
Here is info to compare Purina Puppy Chow to Purina Pro Plan. The biggest difference is in the ingredient list.

8O ... i had no idea, thanks
I too have experienced firm, less firm, then loose stool with Benny. It happens when we walk, run or play at the park. I personnally have blamed it on an increase in metabolism during exercise.

Exericse also stimulates the muscles in your intestines thus causing them to move contents trough quicker than normal. Therefore, the stool doesn't have a chance to firm while it is in the bowel.
We stopped feeding puppy kibble to Nelson when he was six months old. At over one year of age your dog should definitely be eating adult food.
Our pup Roxie does the same thing on walks. I doubt it's the food, we feed Roxie Nutro (large breed puppy and now large breed adult) and she still does it. We've chalked it up just as her normal behavior (like her 'aggressive need for affection'.
