Unique Tricks -- it's for a pet show contest!

There’s a pet show coming up in March in Arlington Heights, IL. I’d like to enter Hendrix in the most loveable dog contest. He needs a unique trick though, any ideas? I have a hunch that our sit, stay, shake hands, turn around and lay won’t cut it in this contest.

can you teach him to wiggle his bum on command? :D
can he eat like 50 hot dogs in a minute? that would be unique.
jill, you made me laugh...

the end result might ruin his chances for most lovable dog, though
i know. i thought about that whole not chewing food thread too, that would be a lot of hot dogs to come back up whole. he might win grossest dog!

i thought of that because it occurred to me, other than catching things in the air, clyde has no cool tricks either. however, he's a huge piggie so i figured something related to eating would be his superpower!
what about putting a cookie on his nose making him wait till you give him the high sign, flip and catch the cookie...
that trick always makes me sad for the dog. i wouldn't want food on my nose.
bet it was never a yummy cookie though.....
true, but i'd probably just get crumbs in my eye or drop it on the floor during the flip rendering it inedible. :(
poor jill...so sad.
Does he like to dig? You could try teaching him to dig on command in a big pot and do a gardener's helper trick!!! I think that'd be cool...
Hi,

Merlin's former trainer whom trains dogs for the movie industry taught me this really cute trick. You know the green tape you use when painting...not much adhesive on the back? Anyhow if you stick a piece of that tape on a dogs nose they will imediately try to wipe it off with their paw if they are standing up. If they are laying down they will try to wipe it off with both paws. Hense that's how to train a dog to place their paws over their nose.

Then the finale...you say "who let off the stinky" Haaaaa cute bit and sure to cause a laugh as the dog will then place his paw over his nose!

Say who let off the stinky
Place tape on nose..use clicker
Be repetitive..eventually tape will no longer be needed when they hear the clicker.

Best wishes to Hendrix!

What pet show is Arl Hts and when??? I can meet you there. That would be fun!

It's a Most Lovable Dog contest, ladies! Maybe I can bring Steve and a couch...then Annie will fall all over him!
Over the years I've had 3 or 4 of my OES that would lay on their backs and "ride the bicycle". I think in the beginning they were possibly scrathing - rubbing their backs, but I'd say "Dogs Name - Ride your bicycle" and they'd lay on their back and begin to ride. It was cute. Good luck at the show - hope you win - have a great time.
Dancer used to go into a "play bow" and slide across the floor all the time, so I would say "Slide" when she did it and praise her, now she does it on command.
My cousin's dog, Sheba, eats a Frosty Paws and then deposits the empty cup into the trashcan. She is remarkably smart and seems to understand a lot of words. He taught her just by pointing into the trash can and repeating "throw away your trash"

My dogs, however, won't do squat.

I agree! That sounds adorable!
It is pretty cute...lol... we haven't gotten her ot do it in a long time, but I'll see if I can get her to do it later and get a bit of video. Gotta put that camera to work...lol....
I taught my youngest Daphne to do a High Five. She jumps up hits my hand with her paws. She loves to do it to because she is allowed to jump. I would say high five and then pick up her front feet and hit with my hands and giving her a treat at the same time. SHe picked it up really fast. Merlin however just lifts his paw up higher when I tell him to do it where as daphne actually gets the whole body up. Merlin is a little slow :) but we love him anyway, either that or just lazy :) That's my favorite trick anyway and all my friends seem to get a real kick out of it!
Bailey creeps up on us, like a cat stalking their prey. It very slow-motion, as if that means you won't notice. Then suddenly she will leap at you. The girls even do it to each other, as a start to the Sheepie 500.
Daphne sneeks up on Merlin when they play too - like Bailey - she waits for him to run back into the room, like you said, as if he can't see her. then he tries to jump over her and she jumps at the same time and they always have a mini collision, it's really cute. That would be really neat if you could get them to do that on command!

The Gooch does that too! We call it "Sneaky Sheepie" he waits for the pounce though, you touch him in various places, top of his head, right ear, left ear, bum...it's different everytime when he decides to pounce...it makes me go "AHHHHH!" everytime and laugh my head off! Then he runs away and starts again!
I've never been to the pet show in Arlington Heights, figured i'd check it out this year. It's St. Patrick's Day weekend. Here's the website link for more info....

I'm going to the AKC show the last weekend of February at the McCormick place. I haven't been there in years, I hope it's as fun as when I was there about 13 years ago!

Thank you everyone for such brilliant ideas! I'll try the tape on the nose idea as well as the trash idea. It would be really impressive if he could open the trash can that has a pedal to open it. Not sure I want to teach him how to open that though!

I'll keep you posted as the training BEGINS!
Hey, Alison. Good luck! Let me know if you work on a trick and I'll do my best to meet you at the racetrack. I was at this show a number of years ago. It's fun every once in a while. Mainly there are a lot of booths from people selling things to local rescue organizations. I do remember a zoo exhibit with a bear cub which was very cute. :D
Here's some unique trick ideas you can use:

Guest, that was a great video! Are you Jasmine's trainer?
My OES is a pickpocket - he has a thing about my hankerchief and can dip in and take it out of my jacket pocket without me even realising - could be an amusing trick!

Nik :)
Chauncey is a bit of a pick-pocket. He prefer's the large open style purse's
( my sister's favorite ). He can snatch her checkbook and cell phone with us in the room. He's slick. As with everything else he's not suppose to have, he takes his bounty to his bed. I'm thinking he could make out like a bandit  at the local BINGO parlors or casino. 8)
you mean to tell me i coulda taught my sheepie to steal my wife's checkbook?!??!!
;-) oh the trouble that coulda saved.

I know you are joking, but I totally trained Tonks to do this!!!! I bet if you put your dog in a grass Hula skirt and said "Wiggle!" and they did it, it'd make everyone laugh. People always think its adorable when Tonks' butt wiggles on command.
I have one of those "Easy" buttons from Staples...when you press it, it says "That was easy!" So I taught Bella, when I put my hands on my head and say, "Oh, life can be hard!", Bella immediately goes to the button and presses it....it's hilarious.

Simon does a little sequence. I tell him it's time for a nap, and he lays down on his side (plays dead). Then I tell him "Wake up!" He stands up. Then I tell him, "Ok, now stretch!" and he does the play bow.

An aside to the Easy button trick....she loves that trick so much, that anytime she feels like she's not getting enough attention or wants an extra treat, she will continually press the Easy button until I laugh, pet her or give her a treat...now who trained who????
