Had Rebecca to the vet last week for a urinalysis since she is having occasional urine leakage. Leakage just started only a couple of weeks ago and is happening like 1-2x's a week. It's happening when she's sleeping and a large puddle of clear urine is left behind. All indications point to spay incontinence to me. She's 6 and only was spayed this past May.

The urinalysis results came back with a high crystal content. This diddn't surprise me because she doesn't drink much water. She'll be going in for x-rays tomorrow to rule out a possible kidney stone before we put her on any type of meds for spay incontinence.

Anybody have any familiarity with kidney stones with dogs? She doesn't have good potty habits now, meaning she holds it forever. There hasn't been any extra straining or pain that I've noticed.

So it looks as though all 3 of our pets will now be on individual specific prescription diets. The cat has crystals in his urine (maybe it's the water!!?? Shocked ), hyperthyroidism & now irritable bowel disease. Plus now Frank had very high Eosinophil levels in his bloodwork which the vet is thinking IBD too and he needs to go on a special diet to rule out any food allergies. Plus she wants him to be on heartworm meds all year round now too rule out any parasite incidence.
One of my dogs developed stones when we moved to the country. She was urinating very often, and the urine showed chrystal and x-rays showed small stones. We put her on prescription diet, and bottled water, and 6 weeks later the stones were gone. She is now on normal food. The vet thinks it is the high iron content in the well water that does it. Even with a softener, the salt makes them thirstier, so they drink more, and the cycle continues. Now all my dogs are on bottled water, just in case.
We had a rescue dog that come in from the city, and she also had stones. She required immediate surgery, as she was dropped off at my house urinating blood, every 2 minutes or so. She had 11 stones, and one of them was 1 and a half inches in diameter. Shocked 2 days after the surgery she was holding it for a couple of hours, and then gradually she was normal. She now lives in a convent with 100 nuns, and has no problems, but is remaining on bottled water and prescription food.
Well at least the crystals in the urine are not a permanent problem.....
Hopefully things get back to normal soon Smile
my daughter had this problem with her cats after a move to a new home. she also has a dog. her vet recomended a watering system with a filter. the problems have subsided. i would try the easier things before trying the drugs. edie

We just had a Culligan drinking water system installed yesterday for our dogs
(sigh... yes, I said for our dogs Rolling Eyes ). Good to hear that this could actually make a difference.

Panda has had struvite crystals ever since we adopted her from rescue back
in September of 2005. She was retested about a week ago and the crystals
are still present despite the bladder defect surgery (but no infections yet and
peeing in the house has subsided so we're still hopeful). This should be a
good test to see if drinking water makes any difference.
We no longer have the crystal issues with Rebecca. She's become a bit more active and drinks more regularly. We also add a little water to her food to make her drink more. She does have spay incontinence which we treat with Proin a couple times a week.
