Keeping him occupied in the crate?

I am new to the forum and have an awesome 11-week old OES puppy! We are crate training him and he's doing great at night, sleeping 7-8 hours without noise or accidents (crate in bedroom). He stirred quite a bit before we took his pad out and put a fan outside the crate. The only problem we have is wetting in the daytime. We come home at lunch to let him out and he's never alone for more than 4 hours during the day. They only time he cries or wets is when we're out of the house.

I have two questions. 1) How long will it take him to get used to the routine and stop crying and/or wetting when we leave and 2) does anyone have any recommendations about the stuffed bones at his age to keep him busy?

I have spent several days reading many posts on this site and there is LOTS of excellent info out there! It has been a tremendous help and thanks to everyone!!!

Cheers,
Rick

Hi Rick, WELCOME to the forum!

I have used the big rubber Kongs, and I have used the Nylabones (for extreme chewers).

Welcome!
First off WECOME! you will find good info here from all the members we are here to help. Sounds to me as if you are doing everything right. What is his/her name. At this age he came have a a kong ( if that is what you ment) try putting peanut butter in it. Freeze it. He/she will have a good time with it and the cold will help with his gums as he might be teething. He will learn to hold it longer and longer. How much water does he have, I am sure others will jump in.
Good luck and again welcome.

Yeah, another Virginian!!

Congrats on your puppy. We always gave bones and a stuffie for Barney in his crate. We eventually gave up crating, though, because it upset him so much, so now he's just gated off in the kitchen, which works well for us.
Welcome to the forum! :)

Your pup is adorable :)

I think for some it just takes time to adjust, I think a kong would be safest as they cannot destroy it and ingest it. (At least I've never heard of that happening yet)
Thanks for all the tips! His name is Charlie and we got him from Marti Harrison in Salisbury, MD. She is fantastic! We really wanted a breeder within a day's drive from Eastern VA so we can stay in close contact.

I got the sterile bone with flavoring in it tonight from PetSmart to start with. It's the smaller type and it only cost $5. I looked at the Kongs but they looked a bit big for his size right now and were twice as much. We'll watch him closely with the bone. The Kong looks really good for when his mouth is a bit bigger. Maybe they were just out of the smaller size also.

He doesn't drink excessively before going in the crate. I think it's really related to us leaving him because he's so good in his crate at night. He even goes in and out as he pleases when we're home so he seems to like the crate, just not being alone.

Thanks again for the tips and I'm sure you'll see me soon in other topics!

Cheers,
Rick
They do make smaller, puppy size kongs and since they're virtually indestructable, you'll only have to purchase it once. :) My Beaureguard is a very aggressive chewer and he's still got the first one I bought him. They're wonderful to fill with peanut butter, cream cheese, kibble or other yummy things. Keeps them occupied for a long time while they work on getting the good stuff out.

Welcome to the board! Can't wait to hear more about Charlie!
Success! I went home today for lunch and Charlie was sleeping peacefully with NO WEE in the crate! Yeah Charlie! He's also been calmer when leave him. He really enjoys the stuffed bone and I think it really keeps him occupied for a long time.

Hopefully, it's not just a Friday thing. I'll let you know Monday!
Welcome to the forum! Charlie is adorable!
