Anal Glands

Sorry for the gross subject.... Peanut has not been to the groomers in about a year. I have been doing it myself.
How would someone go about doing this?
I squeezed on each side and some nasty stuff came out. Is this all that needs to be done...or something else??
Again sorry ....yuck!!!!

You're brave! Yes, you squeeze on both sides and icky smelly stuff comes out. If they get impacted (you'll know!), you should go to the vet. They really get in there good and the pups give out a big yelp!

Steve watched them do it once thinking he would learn. This from a guy who first thought you had to put on gloves before cleaning up dog barf! He came home and said, "NO WAY!".
Do all dogs need this done? Please say no (eww!). If yes, who can I reasonably ask to do it -- groomer or vet?
Thank goodness Peanut is tiny. He only weighs 8 lbs so it's not as gross.
Thanks for the advice
No, not all dogs need this done.
Food that produces a good firm stool helps to keep the anal glands expressed naturally... every time they go potty.
Harley has never had to have it done.
Pepsi has had it done at the groomers.
I think Toy Poodle have more of a problem with their glands.
All of my female dogs (2 OES, 1 Tibetan) have had problems with it as they got older. Some groomers will do it if they feel comfortable. Vet charges $18 to get it REALLY good. ICK!!!
My vet does it and we clear the room real quick when he is done, then home real quick for a backside wash. (PHEW)

Gosh your a brave one doing it yourself, I stand about 10ft back and give that lovely job to the vet lol, YUCKKO :?
One of my first jobs was as a "bather" at a grooming shop. With the title came the lovely job of having to clean anal glands. Thank god not all dogs needed it done. I found the easiest (for lack of better words) way was while bathing I would hold the spray hose right over so as I did it, the water would wash it away. That and I got pretty good at doing it with my head turned to the side gagging. :?
Oh boy do I miss doing that at the grooming shop. NOT! lol I think that was the only part of the job I hated.

That and being the one who got to clean the kennels when the dogs had an "accident". LOL. Funny how they don't clarify that when they hire you. Teehee.
