What can I expect?

Beau is being altered on Wednesday morning. When I bring him home on Wednesday, I'm assuming afternoon, should I put him in his crate or let him lye down where ever he wants to? I have another male dog in the house who likes to stir things up with Beau.

Beau is a licker, so I'll ask the vet for a cone. Anything else I should ask about? How soon can he go to the dog park and play? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

When Barney was 'done' it was done in the morning and they kept him overnight (standard practice for them) so we picked him up first thing the morning after. He didn't seem to be changed or affected by the surgery at all (I was hoping it would calm him down a little  ) and we had to use the cone since he is a licker too. Although he learned to use the cone to scratch the area, so we had to watch out for that.
I would say try to keep Beau as calm as possible and try to keep him out of situations that could cause him to become excited (like the other dog riling him up) for a little while.
I would imagine that you should keep him away from the dog park until his stitches are removed, but I'm not an expert, so that's just a guess.
Good luck, Beau will do fine, and watch out for that cone! It will definitely leave a mark!
Baxter had a testicle which didn't descend so his surgery for neutering was a bit more involved than the "usual". However, I dropped him off in the morning and picked him up at 3:00 in the afternoon. I was told to keeep him quiet for about a week (or as long as possible). Baxter was fairly quiet that evening, slept well that night and then promptly ignored everything else! He was ready to go at full speed the next morning. We gave up trying to keep him quiet after the first couple of days.

Good Luck

How old were your guys when they got fixed? Beau turned 1 on Nov. 22nd
Remember it takes several months for the male hormones to flush out of the system. He will act like he's intact......in fact, he might act like that for the rest of his life, LOL. It varies with the dog

Some surgeries now don't require a return to the vet to remove stitches, they are done in a way that they dissolve. Our vet doesn't remove the scrotum either, so there's just an empty bag there. One of our rescue boys swelled after surgery, looked like he was still intact. So you'll need to keep him from running around much, playing with the other dog, etc for a couple of days and keep an eye on the "zone." Any reddness, contact the vet.
I think our stitches were the kind that needed to be removed by the vet...but in any case I would still recommend staying away from the park until the stitches have dissolved or been removed.

Barney was 7 months when he had he surgery. It went really well and smooth except for his need to scratch or lick the area...but even that wasn't bad--it just was red for a day or two until we had reinforced it in his head that it was a NO to scratch/lick there.

Here are 2 pics of Barney post surgery...

Bosley was neutered at 4 months old. In rescue they are altered at all ages, the oldest one we had was 12. The older they are the more they swell, but your boy should be fine. Give him lots of stuffed Kongs to keep him busy.

He should be taken out for potty duty on leash for a week. He will act like he is fine, but you do not want to take the chance of splitting open those stitches. It will take at least a week to close properly. And yes, the cone. Watch him with the cone. I got bruises on my legs from Bosley bumping into me with it. And he also got his head stuck in the toilet once, getting a drink
Every dog is different. Some dogs are neutered and never give it a thought. Tasker had a difficult time. He bothered his stitches terribly and we went through a very difficult post op course. When Ty was neutered you never would have known it, he never gave it a second glance (except to milk the sympathy thing a bit). I would watch closely for the first day or so, if you think he is going to lick the stitches then put the cone on OR somewhere (check his camera) Ron posted a picture of his dog in SHORTS!!!!!!!!! Anything to keep them from licking and chewing the stitches.
Thanks everyone,

Took Beau in this morning at 6:00 a.m. (it's my day off) they said to call around 2:00. Of course, I'm on pins and needles.

Talk to you later,

Karen
Of course you are worried but Beau will be FINE :D . It will be over before you know it!!! Hug (( )) for you both!!!!!!!!!!!
Karen, how's Beau doing?
He'll do fine Karen. I think it's harder on us than it is on them, he'll view it as a chance for lots of extra treats and attention :)
Just called the vet's office, they just said to call back after 2:00 no information was given to me. :(

This is going to be a very long day!!!!! I miss him already!
Awwww....bless your heart! It's so hard waiting for them! He'll be fine. And really happy to see you to get treats & hugs! :D
OK, he's home! Walking funny  They said he was a very good boy. :D
They put a cone on him. I told them ahead of time, that he was a licker.

Doesn't like the cone on him. Keeps bumping into things. I put him in his crate so he could relax. He was was around the house constantly. He gets his stitches out in 10 days.

:D So glad he's home!!! You can relax now MA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now comes the fun part, living with a cone head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad all went well with Beau :D
Give Beau a sheepie hug from us all in OZ. Rest, plenty of spoils and lots of hugs for him till he get his stiches out

And hire the movie cone heads, might give beau inspiration to wear that thing. LOL
OK....the cone has got to go. Beau already broke it! He only had it on for less than two hours and he smacked into a wall and broke it. I had to tape it.

I'm going to look into one of the collars. Ron, thanks for the picture and information on the shorts. Do you think that it might rub up against his stitches?

I put the baby gate in front of the stairs so that he can't run up them. He already tried to eat and then vomited. Luckily it was on the hardwood floor and not on the carpet.

Other than what I just mentioned, he seems to be just fine.

Again, thanks for the information.
I'm surprised that they instructed you to feed him so soon. A lot of dogs get sick from the anesthesia.
Hi,

Give Beau a big or that is a gentle hug from me. We are thinking of him! Sheepie Boss was correct as it takes a couple weeks for the hormones to dissipate from their bodies until you see a noticable difference.

I also have read that whatever pre-neutering behaviors they had such as leg lifting when urinating will stay with them the older they were when they get neutered. Annoying behavior such as humping may also continue and so that's why many people choose to have neutering done before they learn these behaviors. I waited until Merlin was 10 months as I was torn getting him neutered unlike the others.

As I've adopted over 25-30 animals from shelters since I was in my teens (with the exception of Merlin whom has quite a lineage and came from a reputable breeder) each was neutered or spayed and 99% of them didn't appear to suffer any ill effects and seemed fine by the next day. Although good advice about trying to keep them low key that first week and some like to lick which you have to be careful about. Merlin too broke his cone the next day. I cracked up visualizing about what Bosley's mom said!! That was so funny and apologies for laughing at Bosley's expense!

The one thing you have to watch is signs of infection..swollen (more so than the usual surgery swelling) redness and signs of fever. That happens rarely and if it does don't hesitate to call the vet.

Best wishes to your boy!

Marianne and the boys
Did you see the picture Ron posted of the "no bite collar"? It looks REALLY cool. I'm thinking about getting one to have on hand for when Tasker starts his "hot spot" chewing.

This happened with one of my foster boys, too. Poor fellow, his scrotum swelled to the size of a large orange. It was very uncomfortable for him. He had to be put on an antiobiotic and an anti-inflamatory - and here's the really fun part - I had to soak the scrotum twice a day in warm salt water. 8O

Not said to scare you, as the vet said it was not uncommon and easily treated. He just had to be still & quiet for pretty much the whole 10 days. Keeping him still was the hardest part.
Here's a update on Beau: We put a pair (get this) hot pink wet shorts on Beau. Sorry guys, that all I had with a drawstring. I will be taking pictures :D

He had a good night and good day. He kept bumping into everything with that cone and I didn't want that on him while he was in his crate. So, last night the shorts went on. Sorry to Beau that they are hot pink. I think I'll buy him some boy shorts, plaid perhaps.

Thanks for the information Ron about the shorts.

that happened to our poor rescue boy, Buddy too. He stood up for the whole 4 1/2 hour ride home. you aren't alone in the scrotum soaking, tammy! i have some new pictures of Buddy that i need to post. he's adorable and such a sweetie. he actually looks like wizardmerlin's faith's long lost brother!
Panda still has his testicles even tho he is neutered, as in Hong Kong where it was done they call it desexing. They look like deflated balloons. It's only noticable when his hair is clipped short. The ladies at the dog park affectionately call him Hung Lo. Ohhhh that's bad isn't it!

OMG Marianne...that's funny!!!!

I'm so glad to hear that Beau is doing well! :D The Muppets said to tell Beau that there is nothing wrong with the color pink...that is their favorite slipper color and they also think that it goes very well with sheepie fur! But blue is nice too!

Cone pictures always make me laugh!!!! Thanks for posting those!

We thankfully have not had to resort to a cone...The Gooch would go beserk! Deaf and now blind...that would make for a dramatic HOUR...which would be all that I could take of that! 8O
Yup, I agree Pink is okay for guys to wear and besides he's making a fashion statement. You can also post his photo for Valentine's Day and he'd be wearing the right colors too!

Hope he's recovering nicely and give him a gentle belly rub from me.

Hi - I thought i'd post under here - London is almost 8 months now and I want to have him altered. I just found out that my vet charges 400-500$ to do so - which seems a lot. Is this a normal price range or should it be less. He weighs abt 55lbs now - dont know if this matters. what do you guys think - any suggestions?
haven't had this done recently but $400 - 500 seems WAY, WAY too high. I certainly would check with another vet.

I think my expensive vet charged about $150 when Clyde was about 6 1/2 months old and around 60 pounds.
We went through a rescue/humane society to help with the costs of getting Barney done. You go to their vet and have it done and you only pay for the actual cost, or whatever, instead of what the actual price would be, so I think we paid less than 100 for it...
I just happened to have the vet bill from the most recent foster boys I had neutered. The cost for the neuter for 50-90 dog was $96.00. The pre-screen bloodwork was $43.00, but it optional. I like to have it done, especially with rescue dogs as I don't know their history. So, total is still only $139 and much less than your vet quoted.
They charge by the pound for a neutering?

Do they charge extra for itsy bitsy dogs because they are harder to umm.... find?
HeeHeeHee...good question, Ron!

I don't know if it's common practice, but yes, my vet basis it on size.

Oh...that didn't sound too good.
It goes by weight because of the cost of anesthetic....

Ahhh I seeeeeee.... the vet has to drink extra cognac to deal with the little ones (so to speak).

LOL :D :D :D Thanks for the Monday morning laugh!

no, it's cheaper due to pity...
Thanks all for the laugh... Now I have to clean my cereal and milk off the screen...lol
Pepsi cost $55 at Animal Samaritans here in CA. They charge a flat rate...
Plus $10 for the pain meds. They are a low cost place and do this so people with spay/neuter their animals. They also offer vaccines at $10 to $12 each.
LOl - Ron.

Thanks guys for all of your feebacks. I know California has several clinics - they're really good about neutering/spaying dogs - wished I had london altered when I was there. The Rochester area is pretty limited. I'll have to make some calls - humane society and adoption organizations.. maybe they'll know something.
but thanks
Beau's procedure with neutering, well examination and medications, his rabies and distemper shots, and oh yes, that lovely cone costs: $200.80

OK I found his bill: Orch Canine Med 26-75# 87.00
Metacam Inj (per cc) 24.00
Deramaxx 100mg 17.00
Well Pet Exam 21.00
DHPP 8.00
Rabies Vaccine 16.00
Buster Collar 10.00
Cephalexin 17.70

You would never know that he had an operation. It didn't even phase him one bit. :D

He goes back on Saturday to have the stitches taken out.

I live in Michigan, so I don't know how to compare prices in upstate NY. But it can give you a general guide to go by.

Good Luck.
