Illinois Dog Owners - Questions about your vet and bill...

Alright, if you read my other post about pet insurance you know I'm having frustration with my bill. I'd like to try and see if my vet is too high and possible another vet in the area is lower in price, perhaps I'm being robbed!

Here's what the visit intailed...

Exam with vaccines --- (i guess this is the bill just to see the vet?) $30
Rabies Canine 1 Year Vaccine - $22
Dis/Aden/Para/Parvo Annual - $27
Bordetella Vaccination --- (what is this? do i need it?) $21
Heartworm - 3dx $38
Fecal Flotation --- $18.5
Deworming --- $23.5
Disp - Heartworm Preventative --- $64.80 (his monthly heartworm pill)

There were 2 other items on my bill but those were related to Hendrix's ear infection.

I'd love to know if i'm being ripped off or if this is about right. I know my husband will find peace of mind from the info you can share!

I'm not in Illinois but it does sound a bit high. My vet is expensive and even with some medication for a skin irritation for Lucy, it was $300 for both of them with all their vaccinations. If the vet wasn't so closeby and such a darned nice facility, I'd go somewhere else so, my laziness wins out and that's why I don't even look!

Bordatella is pretty much the vaccine for kennel cough, which isn't the most effective vaccine anyway. The more I read, the more I think I'm going to start skipping it. What is the first Heartworm you have listed? The test? Do dogs his age need regular deworming? I'd like to know that part too!
I'm not in Illinois either, but just for grins I pulled out Beaureguard and Genevieve's vet bills to compare.

Office exam is $34.00
Rabies Vacc. 1 year is $14.50
DHP - $10.00 (distemper, Hepatitis,Parainfluenza)
Parvo - $6.00
Bordatella is $14.50
Fecal exam is $17.00
six months supply of HW preventative is $37.00

He hasn't been wormed since his initial round of vaccacines, but that was $11.00

Recently Genevieve had tape worm and they gave me some Droncit. Five pills were $20.50

Hope this helps. Looks like my vet is a little less expensive on most things. Not sure if it's regional, though. Most people I talk to in this area consider the vet I use to be a little on expensive side. But, I really like them. They're great with my pets, so I stay.
Not in IL but Jasper goes tomorrow for his 1 year checkup. I'll find out what it costs here to compare.
I'm in Michigan and we went to the vet on Monday. Our office visit was $40 when we took Kaytee in for some eye ointment and nose check. She also got the Bordetella Intra Nasal stuff which was $16 and will go back in a month for the Bordetella shot (she's got a cleft palate/nose deformity so could have serious complications if she got Kennel Cough). She will be the only one in our pack to receive the Bordetella vaccine... we don't board them.

For the first time ever, we won't be vaccinating our girls over 2 years of age for distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus and rabies. We asked about the AAHA's report and were glad to find our vets now recommending core vaccinations every 3 years instead of yearly. http://www.healthypet.com/library_view.aspx?id=143 They will still do the lepto vaccinations annually I guess.
I'm not in IL either, or even in the states, lol, but it sounds comparable.
Dancer had an appointment Monday as well, not for vaccines though.
Surgical IV Fluid 52.80
Sedation 53.52
Ear Cytology 33.00
Canine P/A Profile 41.80 (bloodwork)
Specimen Processing 23.00
Radiograph Set Up 55.00
Radiograph Xray View 35.20
1/2 Day Hospitalization 30.25
Board Certified Interpretation 99.00 (OVC and OFA)
Canaural 32.52 (ear drops)

For vaccines it is 57.00 for a booster and rabies.(no lepto, no corona, no bordatella) For deworming I think it is 22.00 and I don't know how much heartworm stuff is because I don't give them that.
It's so interesting to see how my vet charges $27 for something while other vets charge $14 for the same thing?! Why aren't these prices set across the board?
Each practice has it's own brands, suppliers and overhead meaning staff, benefits, taxes, supplies, equipment, etc. which usually determines their markup. One example I recently found is a wide difference in the price of Clomipramine used for anxiety disorders. It's $77 to $99 per bottle (25mg/50mg) from our vet but on $20-33 online through Drs. Foster & Smith. 8O

I guess we all need to shop for a good vet but also remember that low prices don't always mean the same quality of care.
I'm not at home, but I'll check Annie's receipt from last year.
With the bordatella shot--I know my doggy day care insists your dog has the shot...so if you board or doggy day care your dog, chances are you'll have to have this shot...

There is a very wide variety of prices when it comes to vets. I think my vet is on the high side, but I don't have any receipts to back me up at the moment. I know my parents' dog vet is high too...
Jason just brought Jasper back, and his total bill was just under $70. That was his 1 year shots, fecal exam, ear cleaning/nail trim (which he didn't need), dose of K-9 advantix, and a dose of Heartguard. We buy the K-9 advantix and the heartguard monthly anyway, so I'm not sure if I should have included that, lol
Hi
I have been reading what you all pay for vets etc. Yes some of these things are necessary but there are some you could do and save yourself a lot of money.
Shots, except rabies in some states, you could give yourself. (yearly shot aout $5) Worm meds you could also do. Keeping ears clean, once a week will prevent tons on medical bills.
I get most of my meds/shots from Foster and Smith. You could look up info on the internet and do it yourself.
I scale my dogs teeth, give them raw/frozen chicken wings, these will keep your dogs teeth clean & white, plus help their diet.

You all pay more then what I pay as a breeder. My vet bills pretain to puppy health checks, ofa's, cerf,,whelping issues etc.
I don't have heart worm problems in Montana nor fleas, so that is not an issue for me.

Barbara
Pooh's vet charges $62 for an office visit--that includes...just an office visit. I am looking for a ne wvet.....
LOL...Pandas office visits are about 80-90 dollars...thats without any meds..
Sorry, I must have just thrown out Annie's vet invoices. I'll let you know what they charge when we go in April.
I found the invoice! It was in the "to be filed" folder. This was from March 2005 in Lake County, IL.

Exam $31
Rabies vaccine $28
Dhpp Booster-adult $26
Bordetella vaccine $26
Heartworm-Ag-elisa $33
Hi Hendrix's Mom!

My vet is in Niles, IL., and here are some of Oscar's charges:

3-year rabies: $44
Heartworm test: $30
1 year of heartworm meds: $178.04 (depends upon weight of dog)
Comprehensive physical exam: $55

Hope this info is helpful.
Laur
Thanks Laur and Stacy that does help!

Any idea why I wasn't offered a 3 year Rabies vaccine? Is it because Hendrix is only 1?
I'm not sure at what age they can start the 3 yr rabies. I need to ask the vet about it too. He never mentioned it and Annie will be 9 this year. No reason she shouldn't get the 3 yr.
I'm beginning to believe that most vets are a rip off. I love my vet and he takes great care of my animals, but it costs a fortune.

I have 14 cats and 2 dogs (yes, I'm a nut, but they're all taken care of and go to the vet at least annually). I'm a registered nurse and recently found out that I can vaccinate all of my cats for less than the cost of one visit with one cat!

Your bill is even higher than mine and I'd question them about the charges. I pay less at my vet for heartworm preventative and flea control than I can get on the Internet, but I get slammed with the office visit charges every time I go in. Many vets don't charge this unless it's just an exam. My previous vet, who is retired, only charged me nominally for vaccines and no office visit. He sold his practice to my current vet which is how I ended up with him.
I think they only get a 1 yr rabies shot the first time, after that iti s a 3 yr shot. My vet charges $35 for an office visit, but I get all the shots done on clinic days which greatly reduces the costs. Then you don't pay for the office visit. We also don't have heart worms, fleas or ticks where I live.
Those prices are LOW, not high. What you are describing is a mess of things known as a basic annual exam. Usually they are in the neighborhood of $120-$160. This is simply basic medical care. Sometimes you can find this for as little as $99.00. While the individual costs may vary a bit, the idea is your pet needs vaccines, and could die or become very very sick for an extended period of time without them.

Just to see the Dr. is $45 in our clinic. You are paying for a professionals time, her staff's time, the peace of mind of having he or she look over your pet to ensure any early problems are noted (heart issues, neurological issues, etc.) A thorough exam will include a mini CBC, vaccines, a physical, dental exam, &etc. If you did this at a human practice it would be $500 to just shy of a thousand, maybe even over for a comparable examination.

Pets are NOT cheap. You should get pet insurance ($30-$50/month), participate in a wellness plan ($150-300/year) if one is offered, and be prepared at any time for expenses that can range into the thousands of dollars for a serious illness. Pets are part of a family, not a possession like a refrigerator or a washing machine. Their value should go far beyond their simple replacement. After all YOU couldn't be replaced with a similarly aged, weighted and sexed human for your cost if you became ill could you? I think your family might notice the difference.
I don't know your circumstances, but where I'm from those are not low prices. Low prices to me are the McDonald's Value Menu.

Now given what our pets mean to us they may be worth the money or even a good value, but forking over $300 for an exam and meds isn't a low price. In my opinion, anyway.
Oh people people. I just paid $2,000 (yep, that's TWO THOUSAND) to my equine vet. That was for x-rays, joint injections, IV Legend, Previcox and an emergency trip charge. I about died when I opened the envelope, but there's not a person on this board who wouldn't do everything they can for their beloved friend.
It is about $300 here for two.
Prices discussed were from posts five years ago, too! :lmt:
I sort of want to ask my vet(s) to print off our invoices over the past three years we've had Rudie. I can't imagine he's cost less than $8-$9k.
I am in Ohio. I took my 2 cats in last week and had the following charges
Exam 31.00
FDRC-C/FLV Combo 28.75
Intestinal parasite screen 17.50
Rabies 3 year 18.00

We got Comfortis for Carley and it was 98.99

The bill for all 3 animals was 273.99

Does anyone else use Comfortis? We have not given it to her yet. I have been trying to find info online about it.

Bonnie/Carley's Mom
Ours for booster is £31:00 includes check up. We buy worming & flea stuff from the internet in bulk as its cheaper. Pet insurance £220 a year. Clean the ears out once a week & trim dogs nails myself. Brush teeth every day & have a descaler also use this new green gel for teeth. pluck ears and clean pads. Also use aloe-Vera leaves on her pads as it helps her paws. Clean eyes every day. Watch there weight as OESD and labs suffer hip issues so not too fat. Sherwood who is now 14 looks as good as most 6 year old labs. I go through Georgi coat after walks due to plant & bug life getting in her coat
I am south of Chicago and my vet charges $58.67 ( ? ) for just an office visit. Costs from last year:

Yearly Core + exam, vx/parvo $54.92
Bordatella $29.13
Fecal $39.03
Heartworm blood test $54.99

It appears that the cost of the yearly office exam is combined with whatever vaccine is due that year. My dogs only get their core vaccines on a 3-yr. rotating schedule.

It seems that some of my vet's costs are high, especially the office visit. I have been going to this vet for almost 40 years and don't want to start with anyone else. Good to do some cost comparison, however.
Our vet visit is $65, and we go to a vet in the South Loop in Chicago. I tried a few cheaper places but I've never found someone I trust as much so the extra money is well worth it for me.
Our vet was so very good when Fred (previous oes) was on heaps of tablets for his heart etc-was costing £140 a month in tablets. She stopped charging me the visiting fee and didn't give him his yearly jabs as he wouldn't have needed them as he was well covered. She kept an eye on him for free and gave me the tablets at cost price. he surgery sent me flowers when I informed them he had passed away and greeted me with open arms and lots of free goodies when I tood sprocket at 8 weeks to meet them and have his first jab. oh and she refunded me for left over tablets that Fred hadn't used. A vet in a million? Truely dedicated to the care of the animals and not after money.x
That is a wonderful vet. Mine qualifies too. Gotta love vets like that.
