Pet Insurance? Do you have it? How does it work

Alright, I just returned from Hendrix's yearly visit to the vet and I'm SHOCKED at my vet bill. Grant it, we did bring him in for an ear infection, so the medication for that alone was $23 but the bill was $285?!

My husband and I want to find out more about pet insurance. Does anyone have it? What does it cover? Not cover? Do you go to a specific list of vets that is provided by the insurer? How much is it? I ask for your help, my poor credit card needs it!

Here are two links for pet insurance that we have... I just got a ckeck again yesterday from the AKC policy so I know that one is great. Dudster's mama said the other was great too.

You need to decide whether you want a "wellness" plan or a plan for only illness/accident. Wellness plans also cover some of the annual preventative care (usually vaccinations, hw meds, teeth cleaning, etc.)... the other does not. Pre-existing conditions usually are NOT covered and there may be a waiting period before coverage takes effect. You should go to the links above and any other company's you may come across and review the coverage and limitations each plan offers.
I did check out petinsurance.com there website was very helpful and I called their agent to get more detail. She ran through my whole vet bill with me and told me what would be covered and what wouldn't.

I'm glad to hear you got a reiumbursment check, I was afraid these companies would stiff you.
Disclaimer: I don't own an OES... yet

I've never seen the point of pet insurance. Looking down the list of exclusions, it seems that many things that your pet might suffer from in it's lifetime may not be included.

For instance, my first cat died 18 months ago from pulmonary hypertension caused by an enlarged heart. Looking at the AKC insurance (which will also cover cats, according to their web page), cardiomegaly (enlargement of the heart) isn't covered as it was probably a congenital defect that was previously subclinical.

So if I'd have had the insurance, I'd have been out $30-ish a month and when it came to needing the insurance company, I wouldn't have gotten a penny of the treatments he required before he died. If I'd have got insurance on him when I first got him at 6 months, I'd have been out $2260 (3.5 years at $30/month for insurance + $1000 vet bill).

Personally, I've opened a high-yield savings (but you could also do a money market) account, and put the money I'd spend on insurance into that - I get to keep the interest and I get to decide what I'm paying out-of-pocket, and what I'll dip into the savings account for.

I did notice that an annual teeth cleaning is covered by the AKC policy, that could be useful as that's the largest single expense my cats incur each year, but I'm not sure their pre-op bloodwork would be covered.
