walks backwards

:? Daisy has always been like Bambi on ice when it comes
to crossing the kitchen floor. It's Pergo wood flooring.
Anyways, she's started this thing where she'll slowly walk forward till she can see the carpet under the table, stops turns around and backs up to the carpet then goes forward again. What is up with that???
What is up with the backing up thing?

   I'm sorry, that image made me crack up. I don't know why she does it though.
Better get her some beeping back up lights.
HeeHeeHee

I have no idea why she'd be doing it, but it's very funny!
That is so funny, see if you can get a pic of it
I'm just wondering if she has lost a bit of confidence on the wood floor. Does she slip and walk unsteady on that? The backing up to the carpet under the table is like getting her footing again then starting to walk over the wooden floor again. It is funny, but I am sure she is not sure of the surface. Paw wax can give her confidence if the surface of the floor is slippery for her, it gives them traction on slippery surfaces.
Sweet baby! Jillian must be some kind of insecurity with the flooring changes. The title of this thread cracks me up! We used to live in a condo with a long corridor. Annie would run down the corridor and then walk it backwards. We used to make beep beep noises! If we tell Annie to "back up" now, she actually does it! Here are some examples for your visual aid: (1) when I open up the oven and Annie's in front of it, (2) I'm on the toilet and she comes to visit and I need to stand up (nice visual, huh?)...

Where do you get paw wax? Chummie has a hard time getting up on my wood floors. . .

Jillian -- I have no help to offer but I would love to see a video.
Val most pet supply places should have it, it comes in a little round tin and you just put the tinniest bit on your finger and just smear across the pads of the paw.

If you can't find it, better chance of getting from show supply place as a lot of show people here use it for indoor showing to stop the dogs slipping so maybe somewhere that sells show grooming supplies.
jack does that when he needs to get out, possibly the same?
Found a Link for you Val,

This is what I use, had to on my old girl Peppa as she could not get traction on the tiles to get up when she had been laying down, went from having to help her up to her being able to get up herself with this stuff. Gave her back her confidence with walking on slippery tiles too. Hope this helps chummie.

I have a stupid question, Does this pawwax leave a residue or marks on your floors? cuz I am really anal about clean laminate floors

Awesome! Thank you! I was just searching for it and didn't see it at my usual sites. . .
No it doesn't LOL, I am the same with floors, you are only smearing the tiniest amount on the pad and it virtually dries on the paw straight away, no greasy footprints on the floor
Oh Goody. I hate paw print on my floors. I got one of those Hovver Vac and Mop thingys for Christmas. Bunkie knows to get on the couch when it comes out.
Thank you all for your responses!
Daisy is very uneasy around all foors that arn't carpeted.
When my mom had to watch her for me. She had to get a runner for the kitchen, stairs and hallway so Daisy could get from point A to B.
I''ll look for the paw wax? Sounds interesting.
p.s we say beep, beep, beep when we catch her backing up.
My hubby and I just shake our heads and laugh.
I found this topic from an internet search and was trying to figure out why my huge bull mastif mix is only walking backwards on our hardwood floors.

We have throw rugs placed in areas through out the house and he will walk front wards on the rugs, but as soon as he steps off the rug he will turn around and walk very slowly backwards till he reaches another rug. He is a big dog and we have done the "beep beep beep" thing for years now! :D

Funny thing is if he is not sure of the surface while walking forward, then he is twice as clumsy walking backwards. He also has a hard time seeing where he is going when walking backwards.

He also has to back thru tight areas too even if there is a rug down or on carpet! there is an area rug in our family room with a coffe table on the center of it and a large sofa parallel to the table, there is just enough room for him to walk between them, but when he does he has to stop, turn around, and back in between the table and sofa. If you are blocking the exit side by standing there, he will wait till you move to finish backing thru. He will not go forwardat all.

He started this at about 4 years old and still does today at 11 years old.

Would love to know why, but never found a good answer.
I have non-slip spray from a show catalog. That stuff works great and leaves no residue either.
They're no different than we are when it comes to walking on ice, especially when we get older.

They don't want a broken hip either, so they do whatever it takes to prevent it. Unlike us, we'd rather take a chance on falling than to "look stupid." But, they look cute when they do it!!!

When I had my gang I tried hard to keep my floors clean and shiny, until I realized 'shiny' was creating a problem, so I settled for clean. With 7 OES in the house I can't believe I said the word clean! Oh well, at they were for a few minutes.

Wish I'd known about this pad stuff back then! Maybe I'll get some for myself!
I have this same issue for a Samoyed, who had extensive knee surgery at 8 mo.

I believe it is his rear claws, combined with lot of hair on his feet.

He also spins out a lot, and has trashed the finish on the oak floors with his spinouts.

Unfortunately, i have not found that trimming either the nails or the hair helps, but it comes and goes with him.
Couldn't resist jumping in. Sam is good about backing up when needed. And sometimes when it entertains us.

Maybe just unsure and needs to check it out from all angles :-P If its a new texture shes bot used to may be the answer
My Petey started doing the backward walk out of the kitchen floor onto the carpet a few months ago. We felt it maybe something wrong or his equal Librium was off maybe but now that I see other dogs have the same issue its just all about insecurity. That's actually a very big relief! Although its hilarious to watch, I do feel sorry for the big guy.
