pet smart training

Has anyone taken the puppy training at Petsmart?

Merlin is growing so fast I would feel a lot better if I knew that he went through some sort of training.

Petsmart training is a good course. It is not too demanding or complicated, all positive and developed by well-known and repected trainers. And by the end of the cource your dog can sit and stay with all the distractions that the venue has.
But, all trainers have thier own little twist, so I would recommend going to watch a clas or two, to see which trainer you would like to take it with. And that goes for any training cource. You need to be able to learn what he/she is teaching.
Socializing is critical for a puppy, so even if the training is basic, your pup needs to get out with the other kids,er, dogs.
I took Mollie to Petsmart for Beginners and Advanced. I enjoyed it and learned alot. I think Mollie liked it too. She learned to stay until I gave her the OK command.
My personal experiance with Petsmart had its pros and cons.........the trainers were very nice and had alot of great tips and advice to share (pros), however, Ben was the only one in the class (there were more people signed up, they just, never showed) besides the trainers dogs. So, Ben did not have the puppy time that I had wanted for him....and the socialization....(cons)....so, I would suggest that you just double check and make sure that you are not the only one going to be there!

Good Luck!!
Daisy and I did the Beginner Training at Petsmart and are currently taking the Intermediate class. She loves it and I think it is helping both of us. Somehow she knows when we pull into the parking lot at PetSmart and gets excited the minute I turn in there - even when it's not class day. She loves to go and look around and it is good practice.

We originally started in a puppy class but after the first one, Daisy developed a cough and the vet recommended that we wait until she had had all of her shots before taking her with all the other dogs (personally I think she got the cough from the neighbor's dogs. I don't think they've had any shots and little care. I feel bad for them but... I try to keep her away from them as much as possible), so we enrolled in the Beginner class right after her last shots as she was almost 6 mos old.
I took Tag through puppy class, we started with a full group of dogs...all sizes, even a sheepie was there. Then one by one, they all dropped out, and didn't care anymore. So at the end of course, only Tag and 1 pug was left. He didn't get the socialization either, even tho we signed up into a full class.

I would avoid going on any 8 week span that would include any holidays, during that time we had 3 holidays, which made an 8 week course more like 12...that's alot of Saturdays to stay home. Otherwise, I was good friends with the trainer, he use to work with my husband, and he has a helicopter license...but enjoys working with dogs....even with his allergy to them.

I have Ziva signed up to take the same course, but this time, we are going on a weeknight. For more of an advanced class, I am gonna go soemwhere else, and be more focused (I think).
Emma recently finished her puppy training class at Petsmart. I thought that they did a great job, the trainer was excellent and took her time to help you if you needed it. Emma was lucky that there were always puppies in her class, if one left it was usually because they graduated. But she loved going and made several friends. I plan to sign her up for the advanced class in February after she has healed from her surgary. (She got spayed recently). I also liked the price,at my petsmart it was $109 for 8 classes.

I've taken Max to two classes at PetSmart, puppy and intermediate, he loved it and I learned quite a bit!! All the people in our classes stuck through and we actually had the same group for both classes because we all got along so well!! I'm planning on taking Max to advanced class this spring. I really like the trainer, she's very dedicated to what she does and loves animals. It seems like we could live at PetSmart, between doggy daycare, training, grooming, shopping . . . . .

Personally, we didn't get much out of it but it was worth every cent because Yuki was THRILLED to go. She loved herding all the other dogs.

This is really good advice, you shouldn't take your puppy out with other dogs until their puppy series of shots is completed. We were in Three Dog Bakery the other day, in a mall full of other dogs, and a girl had a 7 week old puppy there. Trying on outfits of course. The poor dog was terrified and was exposed to lots of other dogs who may not have had their shots. Silly girl.
Sue..you went to the 3 dog bakery without me???????????????????
It was Saturday and you were working :( We had lunch at Cheesecake Factory after we picked up our race numbers and I couldn't resist going to Three Dog Bakery! Had to get Bailey a big birthday cookie.
Oh say it aint so.....AND you went to the cheesecake factory AND youre dumping me on Monday....oh God...sob sob sob...
Believe me, I would MUCH rather hang out with you and Panda than fly to Connecticut for a week (no offense to any members in CT but where would you rather be in January?). Unfortunately I need my paycheck to buy dog biscuits, so off I go
I was just noticing that you said you brought your dog to the mall, i also noticed you guys were in AZ. Is it an in door mall you can bring your dogs or an outdoor mall, because Emma and I live in Boston and it would be so great if i could bring her shopping with me instead of leaving her in the house.

Also you guys are lucky just living in AZ i visited Phoenix several times and it is truly beautiful!

Michele, the petsmart that i take panda too is at a mall, however, there is an outside entrance...i usually use that...but we did take Panda to an outlet mall in sandiego and she went in most every store with us...except the ones with china 8O
Michele,

Joan and I have taken our dogs to the Wrentham Villiage Outlets off of I-495. It is a very large strip mall... it is in it's own development, and the stores are set in 3 or 4 different rows of stores.

We only take him into the Big Dogs store, but it's fun walking around the mall. They sure do get lots of attention.
Thanks for letting me know Ron! :D

I had never heard of it before.
you can training him by your self :) thts one of solutions. I start one wek after i got him hi now to sit, lay and bark. I spok with one man who was work for police and he told me to wait until Bruno have 7-8 month. We here dont have obidience clases or clases for socialization :( i want to teach Bruno to stay, go without leash, wait) and this man told me that hi will teach me what is important for that.

Pirate went through puppy class all the way to get his CGC at Petsmart. We loved the trainer we had, and felt all the classes were very well done.

I'm told Malinois are the Belgium version of the GSD. Note the "pantsleg" used in the demo - would indicate the dog is learning to be a police dog.

Years ago it was thought that puppies cannot be trained until they were at least 6 months old. We know know that they can start to learn signals and respond to them as young as a few weeks old. It is never too early to start age=appropriate training.

The video is a demonstration of the Schutzhund sport of dog training. There are 3 areas....tracking, obedience, and protection. It is a very intense program. and is only really suited to a team of the right dog and the dedicated, committed handler. The dogs are assessed and from the time they are puppies they are "molded" into having the right attitude required.

There are competitions, and titles given out. Most of the dogs involved are breeds that lean towords high prey drive and guarding tendencies.
