Food issues

I think I have become somewhat obsessed with the food question since the Diamond issue. Yesterday I was in the pet store and picked up the usual Max puppy and Max large breed puppy - but there was Merrick at the register and it looked so good - no by products, no nasty corn - but no large breed.
When I got home my husband said the Nutro food he feeds to his Irish (and I used to feed my late OES) has no corn, but isn't for large breeds.
Should we swith to something without corn, without byproducts as they are saying on the news here (we have had a number of dogs die in this area)?
Does anyone feed Merrick, or Candidae (sp?)

How big is your dog?
Not all OES can be classed as large breed, since they vary so greatly in size. I know technically the definition is 55 lbs and up for large breed on the bags of dog food, but IMO it should be a higher weight. I certainly don't consider a 55 lb dog a large dog. Dancer weighs 55 lbs and she is a tiny little thing. LOL
Large breed foods have lower calories, so they often just eat more if they feel they are not getting enough, leading to larger, looser stools. They also have glucosamine and chondroitin added for joint support, and some different (lower) nutrient levels to slow down growth.
I don't feed mine large breed, they have grown slow and steady... Sky is about 70 lbs, an averaged sized female. If she had grown at a faster rate I may have considered putting her on large breed, but she didn't.
We all need to learn to read labels. I fed Science Diet for 15 years..I got it from My Vet.....So IT HAD TO BE GOOD RIGHT?????????? Never Ever Questioned!!!!!!!! I was dignosed with cancer......Started to look at what we ate...That led to looking at what I was feed My Babies...... When I looked at the Science Diet label for the first time I freaked...... Corn, Wheat, Chicken meal????????? I went to My Vets office to talk to him about this..I spent thousands of dollars yearly at his office so he had to put up with me....... I ask him why he was selling that crap....He tried to ignore me.Well that didn't work as I put him up against the wall.......Literally!!!!!!!! When I got him HOT enough to tell me the truth....It was because Science Diet markets to Vets....higher Profit margin.....Plus Science Diet puts on seminars at Vet Schools and donates millions to Vet Schools..... Most Vets are not into nutrion....They don't know any better. Some just don't care.It is ABOUT MONEY!!!!! The point !!!!!!!!!!! Research Yourself...Learn how to read labels. Knoweledge Is Freedom!!!!!!!!!! Wheat causes many allergies in this breed..... Corn is a cheap filler......Look for a food that the first ingredient is MEAT!!!!!!! Not Meal,,,,,What is Chicken Meal?????? Learn what byproducts are. {Guts, chicken beaks, feathers, feet...} Look for a food that doesn't have wheat, corn, meal, by products, ......... Ask Questions!!!!!!!!!!!!! You owe it to Your Babies to feed them the best that you can........ We wonder why Our Babies are sick......They are dying of the same diseases we die of....... Between over vaccinating them, feeding them cheap fillers, over use of anti botics, putting chemicals on them that we are told to wear gloves while applying......... Knowledge Is Freedom.........Boy am I on a Roll This Morning??........Kaye Second Chance OES Rescue
I have Nutro for large breed. I just switched Bosley from Nutro Large Breed Puppy to Nutro Regular Puppy. though, as he is only 63 pounds at 9 months old. But they do have it.
boo not on large breed as having two other dogs i find it easier to feed them all the same.
We have four dogs and at the moment we are feeding three different foods.
Kerry, I would think your first girl wouldn't get too big. At 15 months, Toby is hovering at 65 pounds so that would probably be a good reference point for yours. Their parents are about the same size.

Definitely read the labels. Some of the highly marketed dog foods are equal to McDonalds for dogs, junk food. Definitely make sure that the first ingredient is a meat but make sure you are aware of your dogs potential allergies too. We don't feed anything or have treats with beef anywhere in the first 25 or so ingredients because Norman is that sensitive to it. We had gotten some marrow bones for the other dogs and he still had problems from when they were licking each other.
Along the allergy lines, chicken is safer than beef and salmon is theoretically safer than chicken. We hadn't noticed any problems with the poultry or fish based foods, except the smell!
Thank for bringing up this topic. I have been conserened about what exactly to feed emma ever since i brought her home. First, the breeder had her on purina puppy. I quickly switched to nutro natural choice large breed puppy for her ( i was especially interested when i saw oes puppies on the package). then i recently switched to Wellness Puppy because i heard it was better for her, all natural and all that.

This week however i went to get some food and the local store ran out and wasnt getting any in till tuesday. So i tried an other store from the Wellness website and called them but they told me they stopped selling Wellness because they changed their ingrediates and its basically all byproduct now! This upsets me because I don't know if i should be changing her food so much.

Does anyone know what byproducts are, one responder said that chicken meal is a byproduct but i looked and a lot of the higher end puppy foods have chicken meal as one of their main ingrediant, including Wellness, Nutro, Merrick, Canadae (spelling sorry) etc. What's a parent to do? Is some chicken meal better than others?

I did notice that natures vairety chicken and rice formula does not have chicken meal listed as a main ingrediant, and i have considered switching that but i am unsure if they have a puppy formula (if people know please tell).

Any opinions to these questions would be greatly appreiciated.
