Buster is Available in FL

I wrote the following for the OES-List so you may have already seen Buster's story -- if not here it is.

Last week I got a call from a family that needed to turn in their OES due to excessive barking. They said they would deliver him to my home. They said they would have him groomed and bring all of his vet records and his AKC papers. The drop off day and time arrived and went -- they were supposed to be here at 3:30 or 4:00 -- No dog -- no call. I tried the two phone numbers I had for the family. One rang and rang, the other yielded a message of "this call can not be completed". I sent an email saying I had dinner reservations at 6:30 and could wait until 6:20... no reply. I figured they changed their mind (That often happens in rescue) At 6:20 I left them a note on my front door to call my cell phone.

At 7:45 I got their call -- they were at my house and wanted to just leave Buster there in his crate outside by my garage door with all the paperwork (Including the signed owner release). I begged them to wait 5 minutes and I would be right home to meet them.

This really annoyed my husband (that I had jumped up and left my dinner and him and our friends). In 5 minutes I was home -- there in my driveway was Buster on leash with his owner's brother in law doing the drop off.

I said, "Oh my! He has a tail -- Oh, my he is black and white!" They said that is because he is under a year old. With in 2 minutes they were gone -- I was left with a very cute little (I'm guessing about 50 pounds) dog that looks like an OES puppy with a tail. He is very clean (he had just come from a bath) with a nice puppy cut. He will be 1 year old on January 30th.

I left him in his crate (in the house) and went back to dinner (there wasn't a bark out of him) That night he slept in his crate without barking!

The next day he played nicely with my dogs and was very well behaved -- other than his paws occasionally on the kitchen counter. He really is a nice cute dog.

The reason I also listed this post under breeding too because Buster looks like no other OES that I have ever seen. I thoroughly went through his papers -- they had paid $395 for him (his asking price was $450) and he was sold as an OES. There is an AKC registration on his mother and she was listed as an OES. There is no information at all on his father. I called the breeder (she is in FL) and she told me he is still black and white and has a tail because his father is a standard poodle! She didn't want him back because now she isn't breeding the mother (a 40# OES) with standard poodles any more -- she now breeds her OES female with a miniature poodle -- and apparently those puppies are more valuable --they are available at $1,200! I then contacted the previous owner, she said the breeder is wrong and that the breeder has mental health issues. The previous owner had no clue that he may not be pure OES and because they paid $395 for him -- he must be pure OES. No sense arguing with her.

So here I am with a very sweet pup that I think will forever look like an European (because of the tail) OES puppy (because of his size, coloring, and coat). He is very smart and trainable.

Any one interested in adopting Buster? He will be neutered on Wednesday. Pictures will be available shortly.

He sounds wonderful, Marie!
I see photos of some of the rescue sheepies with tails. Why can't the tail be cut off when the dog is older, for instance at the same time that he/she is neutered?
There really is no reason to dock his tail at this point. It is very "pretty" and he is a pet. I do not think many vets would dock the tailk on an adult dog.

If any one is interested in pictures of Buster I can email them to you as I haven't figured out how to post them on this site yet.

He was weighed at the vets this AM he is 45 pounds.

He sounds great, Marie. I wish you were closer. Steve and I decided that if and when the timing and location was right, we'd like a younger sheepies, but preferably not a puppy puppy (very young). I think Annie would do well. Although she's food aggressive, I think she has a lot to teach a younger pup. I've determined that she will play with another dog, just does it by nippng at them as she runs by unless she has another toy to grab nearby. I watched videos of her the other day with the 3 litters of pups that she had and she was great with them. If anyone is coming to Chicago...
The food aggression won't be a problem -- feed them in seperate rooms. I have one eating in the laundry room, one in the kitchen, one in the master bedroom and one in the exersize room --I suppose I could have more foster dogs until I rrun out of rooms...

I suppose you could feed them in crates but I only have 2 crates set up right now...

By that time it would be similiar to cutting off a limb. We like Bosley's tail. It is the only part of him that doesn't mat!

Thanks, Marie. Annie is also aggressive over "OUR" food or if she's sniffing something outside. She doesn't want any other dogs to get something that would potentially be hers. She attacked my inlaws cocker spaniel under the dining room table and my mom's blind dog while my mom was eating a cookie in the living room. I suppose if she's monitored and told "No" enough times she'll get the point? What do you thinik?
With four dogs, two of which are females, we deal with food aggression all the time. The most important thing we've taught them is tha "our food" is "our food" not any one elses and any puppy or dog that comes after our food is put in time out (they each have specific areas they go to when they misbehave - either a crate, a room where they can't see us or to bed). The oldest female sits on the floor and "reminds" them all if they get too close that this is unaccepatable behaviou! We do feed them all seperately two in crates, on in the garage and one in the kitchen - considering we have about a dozen more rooms I guess we could easily take a few more dogs :)
A quick update. I had many applications for Buster -- everyone wants the cute little young ones. They don't know what they are missing with the seniors!

Buster is now Ralph and he is living happily ever after with his new family in Winter Springs, FL.

Bob ( the deaf boy) may be placed Saturday and we still have Gretchen a senior female.... She is very sweet....

:P Yea! Happy Day!!
Yeah!!! I love happy endings and if I had a tail mine would be wagging! Ha ha!

I love the seniors and it breaks my heart to see so many old ones in shelters. Still promising myself that the next one I adopt will be an older female. I hope all the ones you posted about are as lucky as the Ralph!

tail docking is more or less a voluntary surgery for pet dogs, if he were being used for the field, the tail would have to come off for sanitary purposes.

the older a dog gets, the more pain and transition there is associated with the loss of a tail.
