Aspirin-Tylenol-Caffeine better than Imitrex for Migraines?

I KNEW I had read something about aspirin and caffeine being better than Imitrex for migraines, but I missed a piece.
Just my memory thing.
Anyway, the Aspirin-Acetaminophen-Cafeine combo was better than Imitrex 50 in this study even though they had expected it to be only "just as good".

Quote:
In 1998, the medication containing a combination of acetaminophen 250 mg, aspirin 250 mg, and caffeine 65 mg per tablet (AAC) became the first over-the-counter (OTC) product to be approved by the FDA for the treatment of migraine headache pain, and it was subsequently approved in 1999 for the treatment of migraine, including the associated symptoms
But, nobody had compared it to Imitrex in a study setting. So they conducted a study.
Quote:
Objective:
To address the need for a rigorous, direct comparison of prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) migraine drugs and to expand the database on early treatment of migraine.
Background:
Most people who experience migraine use OTC medications to treat their symptoms, but no head-to-head clinical trials comparing these agents with prescription migraine therapies have been published. In addition, even though most migraineurs treat early in the attack, few studies have been conducted to reflect this treatment pattern.
Methods:
We compared a combination of nonprescription migraine medication (acetaminophen 500 mg, aspirin 500 mg, and caffeine 130 mg) with a prescription migraine product (50 mg sumatriptan)[Imitrex -ed.] in a randomized, controlled clinical trial in which subjects treated at the first sign of a migraine attack. Subjects who reported vomiting during more than 20% of migraine episodes or who required bedrest during more than 50% of migraine episodes were excluded from the study. Of the 188 subjects randomized, 171 took study medication and were included in the analysis.
Conclusion:
The combination of acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine was significantly more effective (P> .05) than sumatriptan in the early treatment of migraine, as shown by superiority in summed pain intensity difference, pain relief, pain intensity difference, response, sustained response, relief of associated symptoms, use of rescue medication, disability relief, and global assessments of effectiveness. An additional, larger clinical trial is needed to confirm these results.

Here is a picture of an OTC medicine, in this case "Excedrin Migraine" that contains the studied medicines: 250mg Aspirin, 250mg Tylenol, 65mg Caffeine in each pill (take two pills to equal the studied dosage).

I love Excedrin Migraine. Not sure what category my occasional 1-2 day headache falls into but usually Excedrin Migraine clears it up for me. I swear by it. I've only tried Imitrex a couple of times (supplied by my mom).
Excedrin Migraine Rocks!!! lol
It has always worked for me.
Almost nothing works for my migraines. Most of the medications only work for me if I catch it right before or the very beginning. Most of the time I wake up with them which makes nipping them in the bud pretty difficult. Once in awhile I see spots so I can catch it then.

OMG I'm seeing double!

Talk about seeing double, compare the ingredients of Extra Strength Excedrin to Execdring Migraine:

I love excedrin, but that's a slick bit of marketing, in my view. If I remember correctly, once it was discovered how effective the combo was, they just rolled out the same product in new packaging. . . At least the price is the same.
Just as an FYI for all you migraine sufferers..... I had a terrrible problem with migraines for years and years, tried everything to no avail. Got to the point where I think I spent more time with a migraine than without. Last year I strted on a prevention program with a drug called Topomax, it's a WONDERDRUG. I've only had one or two in the past 12 months. It's a daily drug and some people don't like that but it's made anamazing difference in my life.
Years ago I took an OTC product called Vanquish. It was about the same as the Excedrin Migraine. Not sure if they even make it anymore. Haven't seen it here in a long time.
Taking that and going to sleep was about the only thing that would make them go away. That is until I found acupuncture. I went from having 3 or 4 a month, some of which I would loose sight in one eye, to having maybe 1 or 2 a year!

Definitely slick on the part of our pharma companies! Pissed me off as the stores now only sell the generic form of Excedrin Migraine which contains aspirin. I need to take the aspirin-free so as not to screw up my stomach. I take Excedrin Tension (formerly Extra Strength Aspirin-free Excedrin) which is the ONLY over the counter meds that help me for all my sinus pain head/neck aches.
I suffered with migraines for years, in desperation I had some accupunture and the relief was immediate :D :D I didn't have a miagraine for months after. Now it seems the migraines have decided to come back and with living in a new area I have to find an accuputnturist (sp). Pain tablets help sometimes.

You could try Tylenol with a cup of coffee. Same ingredients. :)

I've thought about that, but I don't drink caffeine. I probably should as I'm ALWAYS tired! There's a certain rate of release and absorption in the capsules or caplets that makes it work better.
Perhaps, perhaps not. There are caffeine pills on the market like No-Doz

At least there USED to be... :D

No-Doz had 100mg tablets, now I only see 200mg caplets. I bet if I were looking for them in the local CVS I'd see the 100's too.
I don;t get migraines often, but when I do they're pretty nasty. I take 2 extra strength tylenol and 2 extra strength motrin at the same time, clears it right up. It's 2 totally different meds, so it's not overloading your kidneys or putting you at risk of OD'ing.

How often did you get them, Ginny? My doctor said that even though mine lay me up and make me non-functional for a day or 2, since I only get them a couple of times a month that it may not be worth subjecting my system to it. Do you have any side effects?
