Neck Pain

The other night....3 to be exact...I was up coughing and then fell asleep in a really bad position...I feel like I have whip lash....I cannot turn my head to the left or right without a terrible pain that starts at the base of my head and goes down my neck and into my back....I had a neck massage yesterday by a therapist, but now my neck not only hurts, but is bruised as well.....any suggestions out there....and I cant take perc or vica, because I throw up....heating pad isnt working either...sigh..help!

I'd suggest seeing your doctor.

IF need be, s/he can prescribe all sorts of muscle relaxants to ease the spasm that may be holding your head in such a bad position.

Do you have pain moving your head back? If so you may have a "reversal of lordosis"... an unnatural UNcurving of the neck, probably caused by a muscle spasm. A way to check this is to toll a towel and hold it behind your neck with some fair amount of pressure, and then try to tilt your head backwards. If it hurts less, it's a likely culprit. Using the towel you may be able to gently exercise your neck without injuring it, getting the muscles to relax.

But I'd see your doctor if this is something worse than you've experienced before.
How about trying a cold pack? When my lower back acts up, cold works much better than heat. Or you can alternate between the two.

How about seeing a chiropractor?

Can you take plain Motrin/Advil? For severe pain, you can take more than the recommended dose for short periods. I've already taken 4 Advil in one shot. Anything to get away from the pain.

Other than the coughing, can you remember if you did anything else? Bump into something, fall? Years ago a chiropractor told me that the small act that you THOUGHT caused the spasm wasn't the case at all. Said that the back "remembers" everything you do to it and eventually it's like the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back - one thing too many. I once threw my back out brushing my teeth!!

Back/neck pain is the worst, speaking from too many experiences.

My sympathies, and I hope you start feeling better soon! 8)

Chris
Robaxin might work, that's what I used after I had a plate put in my neck. Works pretty well, but then I also had vicodin ex :D
This almost exact thing happened to me last week! Except I have really bad allergies and I had been sneezing and I sneezed one more time and it felt like something popped in my neck. I all of a sudden couldn't turn either direction. And I had tinglies going down my neck and back.

I just took Tylenol and waited it out. Luckily I have a job where I can just sit and not move all day. It took 3 days for it to be almost completely gone--and yes, mine felt like bruises too.

Poor Darcy!

Have you tried Bengay (isn't that the stuff athletes rub on sore muscles?) That helped me last time this happened...
I very infrequently experience excruciating neck pain -- where the slightest movement in any direction hurts. Only thing that works for me is Aleve.

Hope you feel better soon. :cow:
Poor Darcy! Sorry to hear that you're in pain. I'm with Ron, I'd see the doctor first. If it's muscular the doctor is the best bet. If it turns out to be an alignment thing then I can give you the name of my chiropractor, he's in Awhatukee and he's really great. Or, you can come over and hang out in my hot tub for a while, I'll even supply the wine 8)
I may need to...if this pain doesnt go away....
Darcy- GO TO THE DOCTOR. I know a certain kind of upper neck pain can be indicative of meningitis, esp. if the onset is sudden. It probably isn't that, but we want you hale and whole!!! Take care of yourself, and hope you feel better!!!

Karen :)
Try Aleve, that stuff works.
Ouch, nothing worse then a sore neck. Sometimes trying the opposite a cold pack can help with the soreness. Hope your feeling better soon. :D
Darcy, I'm also allergic to percoset/dan and vicadin but you should be able to handle darvoset-- I've had better luck with it than the others. I'm a chronic migraine sufferer and haven't had a lot of success with migraine medication so I wind up on a lot of painkillers instead. I'm on the second day of an intense migraine right now and all I have around is vicadin. It's like picking the lesser of 2 evils at that point, headache or throwing up. The migraine was so bad, I had to choose throwing up this time. :(
Jill, does any of the new migraine stuff help? I think Imitrex(sp) is one. Tell Clyde to be a good boy and make you some dinner, James can do the dishes :)
I take ALIVIL (spelling ???) for my migranies. They are a little round blue potent pill. Pop that and sleep for at least 6 hours. Wake up wirh no headache.
I dont think Brian has any darvoset....he has vicadin and percoset left over from his back surgery.....last time I took one...my ears started burning and 2 min later ran to the bathroom...just like you Jill the thought of having to throw up with a sore neck doesnt sound good, but if its still bad tonight I may have to try it......
Jill,
Hope your migraine goes away..I get them too, but not so bad that I cant function...
Karen, now youre scaring me...menegitis...my stepdaughter had that as an infant and is now partially deaf... what are the signs???
one symptom of Meningitis --> difficulty touching your chin to your chest.

see webmd.com -- i think everyone on the chat today has some of these symptoms:

Imitrex only works if I take it before the headache starts and even then the side effects are bad for me. Frova worked ok but i built up a tolerance pretty fast. I've never tried alivil but I'll suggest it the next time I go to the doctor, I'll suggest it. I don't get them enough to take a preventative but 9 timeds out of 10, I can't function when I do and even then they drag on for days. I'm starting to feel a bit better now-- at least my vision's back enough that it doesn't hurt to look at the screen.
Darcy, I am so sorry you have to deal with the neck pain. I have been suffering for over a year now and find that the only thing that works for me is the chiropractor. If your willing to try more "natural remedies" you can rub Lavander oil on the area (also very good for migraines) If you go to the drugstore or healthfood store you can get a blend of herbs called natural sleepwell and the hops, valarian root ect are also 'Natural" muscle relaxants. So not only will you sleepwell it will also help to relax you. Hope you find some relief...I know what it's like when your willing to do anything just to get rid of the pain. :)
Seeing a Dr is ALWAYS good advice  Taking leftover medication from another ailment or somone elses is never good advice  That's my "Nancy Nurse lecture" :D . In the meantime try moist heat and anti inflamatory. CALL THE DR!!!

Hope you feel better!
From someone who knows about pain....
Of course see your Dr...
I recommend Salonpa pain relieving patch there is a small package and contains 40 small patches.
Just stick a patch where it hurts. You can pretty much get it at any pharmacy.
Hope you feel better
What are they Elissa?
It is made in Japan and been around since 1934 and available in the US since 1987. The active ingredients are Camphor, Menthol and Methyl Salciylate.
It's basically like the Icy Hot Patches. They are wonderful.
I stick them where ever I hurt. They last quite a few hours too.
A friend recommended it to me. I think they are much much better than the Icy Hot Patches.
They make the little patches and big patches with capsasin (sp)
I know CVS carries them, also Savon, Rite Aid. I am sure other too.
I'll have to see if I can find them for those "old age" aches and pains
Seeing a doctor or chiropractor because your neck is stiff and hurts for a few days seems like overkill to me. . . Sometimes a body just needs time to heal itself. . . If you are worried it is something more than a simple stiff neck, then a doctor makes sense. But sleeping in a funny position seems like a good explanation for the pain. I would assume the pain would go away on its own. . .

I agreee Valerie except that Darcy has some other issues in her Medical Hx (we were Chatting on line right before the post :D ). So if she is worried the best place to go is the Dr. Hopefully today she is MUCH BETTER :D :D :D and we can all put our Dr. bags away    . Besides I went to 4 years of Nursing school to learn to say "I think you should consult your Physician"

That's so funny! If you substitute Attorney for Physician, that's pretty much what I learned at law school.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Gotta keep those "Professions" in "billable hours"
Had this last summer, tried to fight up but finally went to doctor and said, "This old horse is in pain, just shoot me." Since I'm not a regular visitor, he knew I must be in pain. Muscle relaxer was better than pain pill, but also got a Ted Kennedy collar.......neck brace. I'm not sure that did much for me. It was the muscle relaxer and COLD, not hot. I had been using heat which turns out makes the problem worse. Yes, it feels good initially but in long run not the thing to use.
Darcy,

Sorry to hear of your neck pain. I'm hoping it's better today. With all of us on the forum telling you what to do or take, I'm sure you are overwhelmed! My neck always hurts so I'm not sure what a "once in a while" pain feels like.

It sounds to me that you likely slept in a weird position; however, if you're coughing too you may just be coming down with something. Best bet, it you aren't better today is to see the doc. In the meantime, ice the area to reduce the inflammation (on for 10 minutes, off for 20 minutes, on, off...)

Elissa, I got to try those patches you mentioned. I'm constantly rubbing Icy Hot on myself. Husband complains about the strong smell!
Stacy,
They really are wonderful. I swear by Salonpas.
Upon thinking about it further I realized that it wasn't a friend that told me about it. It was someone's personal Fibromyalgia site.
I've been using them for 5 years.
By the way for those who plan on buying them, they come in a 3 X 4" box that is white blue and green.

Sorry to hear you're a pain in the neck, I mean have a pain in your neck
Have you tried robaxicet? That stuff works quite well.
Glad to hear that you had the doctor look at it and you got a little relief. Offer on the hot tub still stands...
Thank goodness you went and saw a Doc. Glad it is a bit better for you. :D
Thanks everyone!!! It is amazing how great every single person is here. I really do think of each and every one of you as close friends.

I am also often amazed at how great I am too, Darcy...

I'm glad to hear you're on the right track. Did you get any painkillers or are you feeling so much better that you don't need them?

In a similar fashion, I was so tensed up from the excruciating 2 day migraine that I had that I woke up without the headache, but horrible back and shoulder pain from cleanching my muscles so tight. Sometimes you just can't win...
You should go hang out with Sue & Darcy in the hottub, Jill! :D
So glad to hear you're ok! Phew!!! Did I mention that I'm a worry wart???

Karen :)
THE HOT TUB! That would feel so great!
I've got a hot tub too. Hot tubs Rock!
Oh Jill, you might be "great", but youre still a loser for not being in Detroit when I have to come out.....at least leave a faygo for me 8O

You are ALL welcome in the hot tub, any time! We're always prepared to make pitchers of margaritas, and Bailey will happily share his tennis balls with his sheepie friends. Although if you all show up at the same time we'll either have to take shifts or heat the whole pool. Boy, that would make my gas company happy!

If you are in that much pain, Josh, you need to see your doctor, or even the emergency room.

Good luck, friend. I wish you well.

Just don't turn on any music after the drinks are served. Sorry, Darcy. You poor thing!

If it's not an allergy to the perc and vica - I have to eat when I take them, if not they bother my stomach too. Good luck.

Josh please tell your Mom so she can get you to the Dr or as Ron said the ER. It could be nothing more than a tension headache from all the stress you are experiencing but it could be something more serious, you need to be evaluated by a Dr.

Good Luck Josh. Let us know how you are.

Hello everyone... Not at all meaning to be rude, just couldn't help pointing out that everyone's recommending this young man to see the doctor, yet he clearly said "doctors haven't answered me yet on whether or what it is..." implying he Has seen even more than one doctor.
Josh, even though you seem to be saying you Have in fact been to doctors, continue on that path, and even ask for recommendations to other doctors, specialized docs, second opinions, etc., and I sincerely hope you are able to find a solution to what is causing you pain. God bless.
