throwing up

about a week and a half ago we changed walters food. the food we used to use had dyes in it that were getting on the carpet and walters fur so we changed to a food without dyes. he didnt get diarrhea or anything like that but the past couple of days he hasnt been keeping anything down.

im not even sure it has anything to do with the food. my dad gave him 3 milkbones and some water as a special treat when he got home today and walter threw it all up. and then he threw up his dinner. he also barely ate any breakfast (but thats typical, especially if i dont top it with meat and gravy)

im going to call the vet tomorrow morning, but does anyone have any opinions on what it could be in the mean time? my dad keeps insisting its the flu but ive never heard of a dog with the flu. another thing is that he used to defecate 3 times a day and now its only twice (the past 4 or so days he hasnt gone at night), im not sure if thats a link or he just decided he doesnt need to go that much anymore.
he seems normal besides that, hes been hopping around like usual.. and his nose seems normal...i dont know what it could be

im worried, help!

Hey there,
How is lil Walty ? These dogs are so precious... it's terrible when they are sick.
Let us know how it went at the Vet and how the lil guy is doing. You are a great mommy ! :D
I hope the vet helped you out. The change and diet and the change in stools may be related. But the throwing up ....
I hope he is ok now!
Sometimes the dog will lap up his water so fast he will choke it back up, but to actually be vomiting for an extended time could me lots of things.
Wish I could be of more help. We had a cocker spaniel who vomited every morning for over a year. Vets said it was a throat infection, but antibiotics didn't help. So then we tried Malox. Ended Up just feeding her by the tablespoon all day long. We tried to make sure she didn't lay down too much after her small meals and she stopped vomiting, but boy was she spoiled!
I was just reminded that when Abbi started having losse BM's and heaving we put her on Science Diet's? Sensitive Stomach blend and she bounced right back. Since she started gaining weight on that formula we switched her to a Nutro blend for large dogs. And the good thing is she never has more than 2 BM's a day on either formula. Most days she only has one BM.
I hope lil Walty is ok.
i didnt call the vet because he kept his breakfast and dinner down yesterday, and today he seems to be completely back to normal. i wonder if he just ate something that made his stomach sour?

is it possible that the food is were giving him now is better and that is why hes having less bowel movements? or do bm's typically lessen as a dog gets older?

but thanks for your concerns, walter is back to his normal mischievious self and i can stop worrying!
If it is a better quality of food the dog will have less BM's. Abbi sometimes only has one per day. Activity level also affects how many BM's a dog has, as well as how well hydrated they are. More liquids, regular exercise and a diet lower in grains will decrease BM's in a healthy manner. Lack of exercise can lead to problems and irregularity, as can lack of available water.
I am so glad he is doing better. Sometimes just waiting it out is best, and usually what a vet does too. Abbi can get into all sorts of stuff without even wandering off far. Today she was licking my freshly mopped floor. She liked Pine Sol, yuk :P ! I am sure I had better give her an extra walk today!
Hi everyone! Just wanted to let you know that i tried changing my dogs food and she vomited for three days until her stomach became accustomed to it. I asked the vet and she said this can happen when you change their food. My dog also only goes to the bathroom once a day now too. Hope this helps...
Never change a food suddenly! You have to mix them, first with more of the old and a little of the new until you have moved to all new, no old.

A sudden change in food can cause all sorts of tummy problems. Same with treats. Stick with one type, don't buy what's on special.

If adding extras.......no more than 1/4 teaspoon per cup of food until you know how much your guys can handle.

Same thing with people food treats (Gramps feeding the dog turkey bits)...it doesn't take much to make the dog very sick, very sick. Richer the food, the more you risk pancreatic inflammation.
