The search progresses...

Well,

I just had to share! You guys have been up with me for too long not to get all the gossip on the Great Puppy Search!

I talked with my first breeder today!!! She is in WI, about 2 hours from me. A very nice gal, she seems to be a very knowledgable and reputable breeder, her pups are due within the next couple weeks. How much did everyone pay for their puppies? I want to know what the average is, I thought it'd be around $1,000, she's a little bit higher... I'm getting really excited. I'm not 100% settled on this gal yet, I'd love to find someone in MN, just so I could have a sheepie buddy here in state :)

Anyhow... The search progresses!!!

Karen :)

How exciting! I talked to maybe five different breeders when I was considering a puppy -- all from Tarja's referral list. Prices they quoted were 1400-1500. I also asked for official names of the parents so I could double check the OFA tests @ www.offa.org. That was fun because through that site, you can learn alot about the history of the lineage -- all for free.
   PROGRESS!!!!!!
I paid $1500 each for show quality, I don't know if that's high or low.
Good luck with your search :D
We paid $1200 for Frank in 2004. His breeder is now charging $1500 for pups so I would say it's the average.
Karen,
I am so excited for you :D :D
Keep us updated.
We got Jasper in North Dakota and paid $500 for him, I think? There were only two puppies left. Then another $250 to have him shipped here. The people we got him from are wonderful - we still talk to them, but I don't think they have any puppies or are planning any anytime soon.
I've always heard that an average price in the $1000 range. Barney was $1500 (from a petstore  --not bought by me!--he was free to me!) and then my parents' sheepdog Maggie was $450, but the breeder had 'discounted' her greatly because they knew she wasn't show quality--I think the other pups were closer to $1000.
Panda was $850.00...worth every penny!
Norman was $250 from a pet store 12 years ago.
Carl was from a backyard breeder for $500.
Toby was $1500 from a good breeder.

If this trend continues I'll pay $6,000 for my next dog! 8O

Most good (reputable show) breeders charge anywhere from $1500 dollars up. I heard some stories of dogs costing 3 grand or more because of potential or lines. If only you could absolutely gaurentee health, happiness and a long life for all that money.
Bunker was $400.00.
Bailey was $600 - he was the last puppy left in the litter and was 10 weeks old so the breeder gave us a discount. We call him our bargain basement puppy

Just curious, what is the distinction between "backyard breeder" and "breeder"? Are you distinguishing show dog breeders from pet breeders? 'Cause I've never seen a breeder who keeps their dogs in the front yard... :?
Many have heard the "story" of Tasker. His breeder was asking $1500 for the puppies from his litter. I was sooo dissappointed because that was much more than I could afford. I asked her if she didn't have one she could sell for less and she said well yes, she did have one that had a very "objectionable fault" and she really shouldn't sell him at all.... he was the biggest in the litter and he had some BROWN ON HIS BUTT 8O 8O . She would let me have him for $500.00 but I HAD to neuter him. HAHAHAHAHA like I cared!!!!!!!!!!!!! Objectionable fault MY FANNY!!!!! COurse I guess he is a bit bigger than the average bear (NO RON, NOT FAT  ) and yeah in certain light there is a small patch of brown but SO WHAT :D :D :D :D
thanks guys! I'll keep that in mind, looks like pricing is all over the place, but many are up and over the 1K mark I was expecting. Let me tell ya, hubby was just LOVIN the price tag!!! :?

In other news, I was looking for kennels on the web. types in the name of a kennel that has placed a lot of champion dogs lately. One of the links I clicked on was  PORNO!!!! Masquerading as an OES site! The description didn't have anything to DO with porno, it was talking about sheepdogs!!!! Oh my goodness, I think I'm scarred for life!!!

 I didn't realize the Great Puppy Search would be fraught with such adventures!!!

Karen :)
Porno? I don't even want to think about that site.

Please keep in mind when you're searching online that a lot of kennels do not have web sites especially if the breeder is older. I finally created a web site for Frank's breeder because I think it's a great resource to show photos & info of her dogs. She's in her 60's and never wanted to have a site. I kind of forced her into it by just doing it.

By backyard breeder I'm talking about nice people who take good care of their dogs but don't breed for the standard and just have puppies because it's fun and nice and they like dogs.
Carl is a healthy dog, good personality but he does not fit the standard, he is huge and rectangular, and he is nervous; that's a very big fault. It's also kind of annoying and we've renamed him Twitch.
Toby, on the other hand, is from a good (show) breeder, is exceedingly close to the physical standard and has a take no prisoners personality. (I think he's smarter too. )

I do love all my dogs equally. I equate it to buying a Saturn and a Mercedes. You feel okay with the Saturn but you're more confident with what the Mercedes has under the hood. Breeding is never a guarentee but it does make you feel more confident. (If any of that makes sense. :? )
We paid $600, but normally she said her pups were $1,200.
Old English Sheepdog...$500.00
Trips to the vet....$100.00
dog food for the month...$45.00

Having a friend for life....PRICELESS

Sorry  I couldn't resist.
Bosley...$173 pound fee.....

I think in this area they are $1500 to $1800 for a good quality non-show puppy. (Canadian funds)
Oooh so exciting, good luck with the search, can't help in pricing though as we are different here with the Aussie dollar lot less then your dollar.
Just be diligent in your research as paying top dollar does not always guarantee top health and quality.
Oh! I just noticed that I am "Fluffy"! ....er..um....I mean Bosley is fluffy
^^^^^^^^

and Bosley is looking good!
