Baytril for possible kidney infection?

Beau is passing blood in his urine and all I have is Baytril which we have on hand in case his leg gets infected. My vet is not avaliable, it's not possible to take him anywhere else, and all I know about Baytril is that it's a broad spectrum antibiotic and the human version is Cipro. Would this help if he has a kidney infection? Beau is eating okay, not great, but we do handfeed him because it's so difficult for him to stand long enough to eat much. It's not a lot of blood but I'm afraid for him, the cancer has taken a toll on him.

I don't think it would hurt if you know the correct doseage.
I would suggest giving him lots of water, I wonder if cranberry juice does the same thing for animals that it does for people? Anything to help flush his system out....
It might also be a kidney stone or crystals, though I know that is far more common in cats than dogs.
An aspirin can help with inflammation if it is a stone or crystals.

I'm quite familiar with urinary issues with cats, not so much with dogs.... sorry....
How scary. I am so sympathetic. Is there a 24 hour vet you can call for advice? Are you sure it is a kidney infection? I know there is a 24 hour vet in dc. . . PM me if you want the number. They have talked me through a variety of crises. You don't have to tell them you are out of state. . .

Best wishes.
Well, now his leg is bleeding from the wound site so he needs the antibiotic anyway. That has happened before because of infection and is why we keep Baytril around. Beau takes 100mgs of Deramaxx daily plus CAS Options, fish oil, and milk thistle for liver support. I've never heard of any side affects from the supplements so I don't think it's related. This is scaring the hell out of me, he's lived far longer already than anyone said was possible but he's only 8.
I hope he feels better soon Holly *hugs*
I'm so sorry, Holly. I hope he comes through ok.
So sorry about Beau. I'm not familiar with Baytril, but when my previous OES had urinary tract infections, the vet always asked me to bring in a urine sample as the treatment varied based upon the bacteria they found. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.....
Hi Holly,
So sorry to hear the news that Beau is not feeling well.
Hope he feels better soon, our thoughts and prayers
are with you at this time..........

Please keep us updated..........
Holly,
Sorry to hear about Beau's troubles. I hope he has a quick recovery.
((((Hugs)))))
Sorry about Beau!

I know that Cipro is a pretty powerful antibiotic but I'm not sure if it's specifically for bladder infections but with his other problems it probably won't hurt to give it to him.
So sorry to hear about Beau, just sending wishes that all will be well with him after all that you have got him through so far, stay strong and positive, (((Hugs))) to both of you.
Hi Holly-
I'm very sorry about Beau... I didn't know he had cancer. If you visit the Baytril website, it mentions UTI's so Baytril may also be used to treat them. Here's the link- http://www.baytril.com/52/Categories_of ... ctions.htm

And here is information I found elsewhere online-
http://www.discountpetmedicines.com/bay ... biotic.htm
Baytril is often prescribed by veterinarians to treat a variety of infections in dogs and cats including respiratory, digestive and urinary tract infections. It is also commonly used to treat ear, skin and wound infections as well.

It could just be a bladder or kidney infection... my girls have passed blood with just a bladder infection. Our sheepie mix actually had inoperable kidney tumors. When she peed, she peed blood... not just red colored pee but actual blood... and the blood continued to drip out of her. So for Beau, this may just be a simple bladder or kidney infection that an antibiotic will take care of. And an infection can also put him off his food.

Just call your vet first thing in the morning to see if Baytril is the correct med for him. He will probably want you to bring in a urine sample to check. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
Thanks everyone. We did start the Baytril because of the leg. On the Deramaxx site hematuria is listed as a remote side effect so maybe that's it. I guess we wait and see :( .
Oh Holly! I'm so sorry Beau's not feeling well. Please keep us posted on his progress. I hope he's doing some better today since you started him on the Baytril.
Oh, Holly, I'm so sorry to hear Beau is not feeling well. I didn't realize he had cancer either, the poor baby! My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Chris
Well, this guy must be part cat because no more hematuria :D and the infection on his leg is already better :D :D . He can't do any steps at all so my husband has been taking him out on the deck. Beau hates going on the deck because he knows you go on the grass but it's the solution for now. Benny also makes him go out every 3 hours so he won't get a buildup of urine in his kidneys and thus more problems. Dodged another bullet!!!
You should see if any of the local nurseries has any sod in stock. You could get him his own little square of grass for the deck.

Holly, I'm SO glad to hear that Beau is doing better! I fully understand the stairs problem. Drez does them with help but she could never do them by herself any more.

Give Beau a big hug and belly rub from me!

Chris
Chris-

Have you ever tried the paw wax? I'm not sure if it really works or I just want it to but Beau seems to do better with on his feet.
Holly - I'm really glad Beau is feeling better! I like the idea about a piece of sod on the deck! Good call Mandy! :D
Holly that's great news that Beau is feeling better.

Yep paw wax does work for traction, great stuff
That is wonderful news! :D
I'm so glad he's doing better.
