Anal Sac Leakage-surgery is not recommended-any suggestions?

My 2 y.o. OES often "leaks" fluid from his anal sacs. My vet recommended adding Metamucil to his diet (Iams Large Breed) to make his stools more firm, thus aiding in the natural expression of this fluid. This doesn't seem to help. He is not in pain, has no inflammation or compaction - he just "leaks" and the smell is repulsive. I've discussed the option of surgically removing the anal sacs, however my vet does not recommend this pointing out that there could be nerve damage thus leading to bowel incontinence. Any suggestions?

Wow, that's a tough problem.
I would switch to Iams regular, not large breed.
The higher protein should help firm up the stools. Also watch he's not getting to many treats.
I agree with Stacey and I would also recommend that you sprinkle the Metamucil on his food. My Bernese had terrible loose stool when he was about 6 months old. My vet recommended the Metamucil to firm it up. It works.
