ear gook

Is this a common problem with sheepies? My 2 yr old Paige has ear allergies and no matter how much I clean them, the brown gook comes back. She also hates me to clean them and it's a complete struggle every time, even though I give her treats while doing it. She itches them a lot and they stink too! I've got meds from the vet but it just never clears up and is becoming very expensive...any advice? My ex-boyfriend has a sheepdog with the same problem, is this common?

I have the same problem with brie and allergies causing yukky ear problems. I find it is better now due to keeping the ear canal hair free so that the air gets in and stops moisture building up causing allergens & bacteria there. There is a ear powder by Bio Groom that you puff into the ear and it sort of rots the hair in the canal and you just pluck it out so no hairs there and keeps the canal nice and dry & it does not hurt the dog to use the powder to remove the hair. Still use her prescribed drops on occassions when wattle blooms that seems to be the worst time with her, but all in all the ear has settled down a lot. So if the ear canal is clogged with hair, get that all out with an ear powder and you will find that treatment with the drops you are using will settle it down more. It won't go away but at least you don't have to use the drops so often, only for flare ups. I found the same thing, costing a fortune in prescribed drops, but since clearing the ear canal, the drops not used as much now.
Hope this helps a bit
einy suffers with ear goo too but since a scare and a trip to the vet for something different i've had to change his food due to a suspected intolerance

well i checked his ears today as i have to get them groomed every 4-6 weeks and have a special solution from the vet to use twice a month (luckily i can order this online at a fraction of the cost) and the difference in them from just 2 weeks on his new food is amazing i didn't even have to wipe them today and hes stop scratching them and shaking his head

hes deffinately one happy sheepy, maybe looking at what she eats will help

What is the magic solution?
a solution called otoclean

you squirt it in each ear rub the ear then mop up with some cotton wool then mop up again 10 minutes later einy doen't like it but it makes the job easier

Clyde's been getting yeast in his ears lately-- anyone have any remedies for that? I've been doing regular cleaning but it keeps coming back. There's no infection or other problems that are ear related. We were just at the vet and everything looked good.
Harley constantly has yeast infections in his ears. We were told to use Monostat 7...REALLY!
We also use a wonderful medicated flush called Malaseb which seem to keep the ears cleaner longer
Does Monastat come in a cream? I thought it was like a suppository or something. How much do you use?
It does come in a cream.
Jill,
You get the 7 day cream pack.
It will tell you where to fill the tube to.
Then put half in one ear, half in the other, then rub the outside of the ear to make sure it gets down in the ear canal.
I was told the 7 day treatment works best. Harley was given some sort of medication that of course I paid $40 for, My SIL said it's the same thing as Monostat. I have used the Monostat on Harley and it works pretty well if you can remember to put it in every day.
You can also feed him yogurt. (That goes in the food dish, not in the ears!)

And I'm sure that Ron is beat red after reading this whole thread. That or Joan is now having a long conversation with him!
Well sorry if I offended anyone with the discussion of "Woman Stuff"
or if I got Ron asking Joan what Monstat 7 is for?
LMAO
But it does work
I am married to a diabetic and have a dog with floppy ears... infections of all sorts are a part of life.
I use to have problems with my dogs regarding ear infections and that "smelly gunky stuff". The problem was especially bad in my one golden retreiver. His ears would always be in some state of an infection.
On one of the AOL pet message boards I read where people was using something called "Blue Power Ear Treatment" and claiming alot of success. You can go to www.ITSFORTHEANIMALS.com and read about it.
I started to use it, the cost is minimal to purchase the ingredients, and have never had an ear problem since. I first used this to clear up my dogs ear infections which it did. I now use it on a regular basis when cleaning their ears before a bath, which is every two weeks. I also use an ear powder after their bath when they are all dry, and keep their ear canal free of hair. I have not had a single ear infection since using this treatment. Their ear canals are healthy, a wonderful pink color and do not smell.
I have used the otomax, panacur etc prescribed by the vet and their ear infections would be back about two week after I would stop thier treatment.
I swear by this stuff. The Blue Power Ear Treatment was created by a vet so I feel comfortable using it.
If all else fails for you try this, I do not think you will be disappointed.
It has been over two years for me using this treatment and I have not had a single ear problem during that period and my vet has commented to me on how clean and healthy their ears look and smell.
thanks for the link jackcjjc, looks very interesting. Funny the bio groom powder I use has Boric Acid in it, so maybe that is why the ear problem is settling down. Easy to make up so will try that to flush the ear and keep it under control.

Great link and great information.

Thanks all for your helpful suggestions, hopefully I'll be able to get this cleared up and Paigeygirl with have clean, healthy, nice smelling ears!
It is very important to determine the source of the ear infection. Not all ear infections are cause by yeast. Tasker has chronic ear infections not related to yeast but to a bacterial infection which appears to have colonized somewhere in his body and periodically manifests itself in his ears. No amount of anitbiotics can entirely eradicate the bacteria from his body so we have to be especially viagalante to keep his ears clean and to treat them at the very first sign of infection. That is why is is very improtant that a vet ezamin a swab of the dogs ears to determine whether it is a yeast or bacterial infection.

I clean Taskers ears every 4 days with Malacetic Otic Cleaner And then apply a small amount of Otomax to the most affected ear. At the very first sign of infection (usually that means that any amount of brown gunk shows up when I clean his ears) I start him on BID Otomax for 10 days. If he does not dramatically improve in a few days we head to the vet for steroids and a PCN shot.

People don't realize how serious ear infections can be. Tasker is deaf in one ear and his hearing in the good ear is impaired. Even with the best of care we have a minimum of 5 ear infections a year.
That recipe on the site jackjc posted a link to looks like it would work very well, but I do worry about staining the coat.
One thing it is important to remember is that while that recipe will work for yeast infections in the ear, unless a vet does a swab you don't know for sure if it is yeast, bacetrial requiring antibiotics, or mites.... Always best to check first :)
Willowsprite,

Although the Gentian Violet does stain fabric, I have never had a problem with it staining Fred's coat (and Fred is a white headed sheepie) nor my two golden reteivers coats. I use this solution before I give them their baths, which is usually every two weeks and the solution that has spilled onto their coats washes right out.
I had learned about this on an AOL pet message board and was somewhat skeptical about using it, but I was having a constant battle with ear infections, and was keeping the manufacturers of panalog and otomax in business, so I thought I would give it a try. Since using this I have had no ear infections and my dogs ears are a healthy pink color and have no odor. I also use an ear powder when I am finished. I swear by this solution and it is a fraction of the cost.
