Two questions of a delicate nature

Both of these questions have probably been addressed before, but in my quick perusal of the message board I didn't see any mention. If it's a repeat, I'm new here, so please have patience with me. :D

Blue has an issue where he pees on the back of his front legs. Sometimes he cocks his leg and then he's a little more successful at avoiding wetting himself, but more often he'll just squat slightly or get lazy halfway through his pee and lower his leg, soaking his front legs. This is leaving yellow stains and the a very unpleasant smell. We've been bathing him almost once a week with spot washes inbetween. Anything we can do to correct this?

Also, Blue has some awful gas problems. LOL I'm assuming this is something with his diet. Right now, we're giving him a cup of dry food in the morning, then another cup plus one small can of canned food in the evening. He gets very little people food. What are we doing wrong? Help! Before we pass out from the fumes!

Ahhh...Blue and Barney have very similar traits!

Barney is a squatter. At least for the time being. My husband is trying to teach him to lift his leg but running over and lifting it for him (the first few times he did this, he lifted Barney's front paw) but he said he only did that because he wanted him to miss peeing on the leg. Personally, I don't think that Barney pees on his leg too much (a little  ). You could have a damp cloth waiting at the door when he comes back in and just wipe off his front paw to get some of the pee off...

Barney has gas. Awful, room-clearing gas. My parents' sheepdog has gas, too. I think it might just be because they have a sensitive stomach by nature and just need to release it...I have no suggestions there...We feed Barney dry food with a tablespoon or 2 of cottage cheese morning and night...
Beaureguard does the lean forward thing, too. I've been very fortunante so far that he hasn't peed on himself. But, we've got lots of other members who have had to deal with this issue. To the best of my recollection, there is no "cure" and you're doing the right things by just keeping him washed up. I'm sure someone who has actually dealt with this will be glad to chime in and I most certainly defer to their practical advise on the matter! :D

As for gas....well... :D :D :D ...I'd suggest a mask! No matter what food, there will always be a little. 2 1/2 cups doesn't sound like much for an adult sheepie, though. May I ask what you're feeding him? How much does Blue weigh?
Lol. Normal and normal, I say! Clyde used to soak his front foot but in the last few months just stopped doing it. Instead, since his hair is getting so long, he's been getting splashback on the inside of his legs and, wow, is that gross. I'm almost wishing for the pee foot again!

As far as the gas, I think my two dogs are having contests to see whose is worse...
Jill I laugh every time I remember your story about lifting Clyde's leg for him, trying to teach him how, and getting peed on yourself.  Sorry...but's very funny!
LOL

Well the gas can be helped by getting some, dog biscuits with charcoal in them or just charcoal tablets from a health food store. It neutrilisers the gas. Had that problem one time, not me LOL one of the dogs and it was great in settling everything down. Mayb also look at what you are feeding him, is that causing the wind? I find a lot of can foods creates the problem, you can try mixing the dry with fresh chicken or other meats and vegies not can stuff and see if that helps.

Blue is only a year and half so what he is doing with squatting to pee or sometime cocking the leg is just a maturity thing. He will eventually cocked the leg more as he matures. Lots of people I know have had this with the boys some start early others are late bloomers in that department. Once he starts to do it all the time, cock the leg, then he should not pee on his front legs, as they say the aim will get better
He weighed about 67 lbs when we were at the Vet last month. When I said cup, I should have explained that we use a 16 oz. plastic cup to measure his food, not an actual measuring cup. Is that closer to a good amount for him? We're unsure how much he should be eating. He's not an accurate guage as he'll eat anything and everything in sight. LOL
We feed Barney about 2 cups of dry, plus cottage cheese in the morning, and then the same at night. We are actually starting to cut back a little now that Barns is growing up and not in the super growing puppy phase anymore, but cutting back for us mean probably 31/2 cups per day instead of 4...
Genevieve eats between 3 - 3/12 cups a day plus some treats. She weighs 71 lbs and is fit. Beaureguard eats about 3 1/2 - 4 cups per day; he weighs 95 lbs and is also fit - but he's very tall - 30".

So, I'd say it sounds about right what you're feeding Blue, maybe even a bit much.

They eat dry kibble (BilJac) and then I mix in veggies, they like green beans, cottage cheese or for Gen, sometimes yogurt. Yogurt gives Beau the runs, so we steer clear of that for him! 8O :D We don't have much problem with gas. Only Beau does have it occassionally, but it's not room clearing like Barney's!! :D :D Thank goodness!! :D
Josh, that sounds about right to me. I'm sitting here at work with a red plastic party cup and by looking at it it seems about a good amount per feeding. And judging from his pictures (very cute, by the way) he seems to be sturdy and not skinny or fat or anything. Maybe with the gas you could try and eliminate the canned food and see how he does with that. But know that many sheepers have sensitive stomachs so any change in their diet could bring about problems (not health issues, per se, but upset stomachs and that sort of thing), so slowly but surely is the way to do it...
I feed Ben and Fozzy Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Lamb and Rice Formula and neither of them get gas. Maybe I am just lucky.
Hi Josh
My shaggy boy finally got the idea of lifting a leg verses the squat after hanging out with some big guys (puppers) at the park
Diane...sort of a monkey see, monkey do thing
Hi, Josh.

Not sure how to get around the gas thing. Annie can clear a room out and then leave it herself! :D It sounds like you may be feeding him too much, but check with the vet. 16 oz is 2 cups. That means you are feeding him 4 cups of dry food a day and then adding wet food. Annie is about 75-80 pounds and eats 1 1/2 cups of dry food twice a day (3 cups total). She gets several treats, but not many so we can keep her weight down. She came to us at age 5 weighing over 90 pounds 8O She now eats Nutro Large Breed Senior food. Her breath is so much better after switching from Purina. Nutros supposedly uses less chicken by products and more of the real thing.

Yeah, I didn't try that again.

Clyde has watched many a dog lift his leg at the dog park but he still continues to squat. Clyde says he likes to go against the norm-- he's setting a squatting trend for older dogs (well, one year old dogs)!
Hi Josh,

Beau started lifting his leg at 10 months, however, I have alittle male shi/poo who is 12 yrs. old, and everytime Tahje would lift his leg, Beau was right behind him marking his spot.

As far as feeding him, I give Beau 3-4 cups Pro Plan Lamb and Rice mixed with only 1 tablespoon of canned dog food. Occasionally, he has gas, and I think it's the canned dog food.

Good Luck,

Karen and Beau

Ditto here. Same food, no gas. Ever. We don't supplement with any canned, though, so maybe that's it?

And at 8 months old Bosley was just weighed yesterday at 63 pounds, and still eats 5/6 cups a day! He is not fat, but hopefully he will slow down some.

He does the squat when peeing, and never hits his front legs. He appears to be quite long, though, and a breeder told me that if they are neutered young (he was neutered at 4 months) they get long as opposed to square. If that is the case, then when he squats his front legs would be further away, so less chance of getting sprayed.

Thoughts, anyone? 8O
I'm inclined to agree. Carl is quite long and squats and doesn't have a problem. Toby on the other hand is a perfect little box and pees all over himself. It's really bad! I'm beginning to doubt placing so much oomph on having all boys. I doubt dainty girls would be peeing on themselves!

As for cleaning, use a no rinse shampoo between washes. You can also put some cornstarch on after the shampoo to help absorb the moisture and smell. Just make sure you brush it out when it starts to dry or you'll have a nice dust cloud everywhere he goes.
I doubt dainty girls would be peeing on themselves!

No they don't, not as much plumbing underneath to worry about LOL

I remember a few years back and a friends youngster, half way between squatting and cocking the leg. Cocked the leg sooooo high (verticle side split) that he toppled over, thought I would share that one as I still laugh about that

Maggie and Chumley are on the same plan! And CHummie also used to be 90 pounds! Now she's down to 75, maybe less. Chum gets 1 1/2 cups of dry food twice a day (sometimes mixed with yogurt and/or stringbeans) and lots of tiny biscuits throughout the day. Maggie gets a bit more kibble because she is young, skinny and very active. As for people food, they get yogurt, cheese, veggies and a bit of peanut butter sometimes. THey also get raw frozen marrow bones, which they love, "meat tendon" strips and kong stuffn paste. Chumley has great breath and no gas. Maggie had gas when I got her but after nearly 8 weeks on the Nutro, I can't even remember the last time she had it. I hadn't even realized the improvement until this post. Guess I am lucky.

Well this must be a family trait!!!! The Gooch squats and gets distracted easily...."what's that over there...where is Murphy...what is he doing?" I give up! :D

Just for the record...my Bart spent his entire life...peeing like a girl! 8O

I have come to the conclusion that some get it...and some don't! Did I mention that Murphy has started squating to pee...he USED to lift his leg?

Maybe it's me! 8O
My big, dominant guy Jake never squatted until he was suffering from his hip problems very late in life.

Mulligan, my eager-to-please and bright guy (you know the one who barks up a storm and then hides behind you when you open the door?) squatted all the time, but occasionally lifts a leg if he's near an obstacle like a tree. So we try to get him near an obstacle!

One of the benefits of a squatter seems to be that they can go anywhere and don't need a tree. Jake always needed a target. Trash cans were always a favorite.
NO GAS! Are you people sure you have a sheepdog? :D
Okay, I wasnt go to reply to this, however, it's too funny not too....
Panda has 2 favorite spots to sleep, one of which is by the cold air return..I wash the floors on my hands and knees..and I kept finding marks on the base boards by those areas, especially the air return one..weeks go by and I still cant figure it out...hmmmm...one day Im on the floor kissing a sleeping Panda..and I hear a pssssst....a horrible odor follows and Panda jumps up and runs away...on the baseboard is a new "mark"...not only does she get gas, but she seems to spread a little of it too on my clean baseboards......ewwwwww... :D
Oh, Panda! You dirty girl!
LOL... at least Blue hasn't left any marks yet... that I know of. Oh dear. Now i'll be examining the baseboards and carpet after every gas attack. 8O
Does Barney like dirty girls? She didnt want to offend any of her suitors...but she is an honest girl and wanted the boys to know her "true" self....

:D That made me laugh out loud! Of course Barney likes dirty girls! Well, one in particular...He doesn't want her to feel that she can't be herself around him...

Bailey says Clyde is his hero - he is just a bit younger than Clyde and still squats too. But he's always had really good aim! No wet feet here. And no gas either, Bailey's at 71 pounds and has 4 cups of dry food a day with a handful of treats for good behavior

Does Bailey have a longer or a boxy body? After reading more of these posts, I realized Clyde's boxy body is working against him! Not only is he boxy, he's easily distracted and impatient to finish when he see something good going on somewhere else. The other day his body was twisted sideways when the neighbor's dogs came and he was so eager to get over to them, he started running before he was done and soaked an ankle. He has no shame...

That sounds like Barney. Barney's most common pee issue is the slow walk. He'll start peeing and then he'll take a step forward, then another and then eventually he's walking around, wandering and looking at things and peeing at the same time

The funniest one was when he went over to the pee area and sat down and then decided that might be a good way to pee, so he just sat there!
LOL, Darcy!

Mopsy freaks out when she passes gas too! She used to get this funny look on her face like - "Did that come out of me?" Then she would jump up and move. Then me and the boys started asking her if she farted. That really upset her, and she would go hide. Of course, this made my husband mad that we would tease her like that when she was already upset over the incident. So I stopped when he appealed to my compassionate side (not I side I show too often). Though once and while when she is being particularly pesty when we are eating I am tempted to ask the question because she will always go hide - even when she didn't do anything.
Blue does the walk thing while he's pooping. It's quite comical, the way he walks on his tiptoes all hunched up, leaving a trail behind him.
Well, I have been punished for my bragging. Gave them peanut butter tonight and Maggie is not handling it well.

Chumley does the walking poop too. I have to follow the trail to make sure I get it all.
I agree with Ben's Mom. I to feed Bam-Bam Nutro Natural Choice, Large Breed, Lamb and Rice and have never had he has never had a gas problem. May be something to consider.
OK, that's it. I'm switching OFF of Nutro just so I can watch Bosley's reaction when he DOES pas gas...
For some reason none of my sheepies has been able to tolerate soy products w/o developing a gas problem. So I read labels!! Last dog food run my husband was in charge.........either someone has changed formulations or (more likely) he "thought" he knew what I bought. Jack has been very hard to live with.

As for walking poop........that must be another sheepdog trait. Clean up around here.........trails and piles........sheepdog trails and Pyr piles.
Wish Nutro had a Senior version of the lamb and rice. The senior only comes with chicken. Annie has bad gas too!
I bet that's Jack's problem as I remember Paul saying something about Senior Nutro! Thanks for the headsup.

sheepieboss
Most dogs have more of a gas problem with lamb foods, just in my experience anyway.
The average human passes gas 14-30 times a day..... are you all saying dogs should be different?????

You could always slip a little beano in his dinner.
Ginny -- where did you get that statistic? I can't even imagine that it could be so high!
HAHAHAHA, I AM A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL YOU KNOW!!!!

See below Facts on Farts:
http://www.heptune.com/farts.html

Actually the above link states 14 times per day but a GI Dr I worked with once told me the average was 30 times per day so get out your pen and paper and start counting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whew! But glad you gave us the ORIGINAL facts on farting and not the imitation  The worst, however, are the silencers 8O They sneak up on you, gagging you quietly, until either you pass out or leave the room.

Valerie wrote:

Val, Are you sure you want to go out to eat with me when I come to Philly? :D My old GI MD said that the number per day is quite high!

This website looks hilarious! I"ll have to spend some time on it and send to family and friends. This topic is ALWAYS funny to me no matter how old I get! :D
Well, there are always people who are ABOVE average and there are those who are quite BELOW average............... 8O
Sorry, just catching up on some old posts. I would definitely recommend adding some yogurt to his diet to help with the gas. It's a probiotic and can help the digestive enzymes.
We stopped feeding him wet food and the gas cleared up almost immediately. Now the only time he seems to have gas is if we give him a little too many people food treats. He's so much more pleasant to have in the room now! He's also gotten better with the wetting on his legs. I don't know if that's a temporary or permenant fix, but we'll take what we get.
