breeder questionnaire SOMEONE PLEASE HELP THE GIRL!!!

Ok guys,

I was SURE we had something like this somehwere, but for the life of me, I cannot find it. I'm contacting my first breeder about puppies today, and I want to have a list of questions in front of me, so i don't forget anything. if i wing it on my own, I'm gonna blank out completely!!!! I ALWAYS do that.

Help, help- who has that list of questions to ask a perspective breeder???? all I can think of is "what sort of health testing do you perform on your breeding animals" Gaaahhh!!!!

I'm a little nervous... can you tell?

kAREN :)

In with the good air, out with the bad, find your happy place.

It's here somewhere, we'll find it.
There are tons of websites too with articles on this... here's one...

Hi all,

I haven't been on the board much recently... I've been having a major case of no-dog blues. Hubby remains firm that we need to have the fence up before we bring a dog home, which is of course a very reasonable request. That will definitely be spring, and he wants to get the garage up before we get the fence in. Obviously building a garage costs lots of $$$, even if we do the majority of the work ourselves.

So I keeep waiting- I've been waiting a very long time for my sheepie... a couple of years now (although I've been dogless sfor the last 10 years, after Eve passed away)there are so many individuals on petfinder right now, it just breaks my heart not to be allowed to bring someone home! We've been working so hard to get where we are- I've got the nice sized house, the big yard, I've even got my sheepie ready dog shower in the basement! Sigh... still no doggie under the tree for me!

I WANT MY SHEEPIE!!!! Sob

Does anyone have a personal working relationship with Santa? I could use a christmas miracle- just a small one!

Thanks for letting me vent... you guys are great :)

Karen :)

Sounds like you've made some progress! Are you just planning way ahead or have you resolved the fence issue? I'm so excited for you. I think there were questions on the OESCA website. . . I know I saw a list somewhere. . .
Just start at O.Don't assume anything!!!!!! Ask first if you can come and visit and meet their dogs......Any responsible breeder will want you to come and visit and get to know you....... If they don't want you to come and visit........RED FLAG!!!!!!!!!! If the first thing out of their mouth is send ME THE MONEY and I will put you on the waiting list...RED FLAG.....If the breeder doesn't ask you any questions..age of children, yard, work schedule, other pets, experience with the breed.....RED FLAG..... Ask for references of Puppy Parents that have one of their Babies over 3 years old..... Don't just except that they have a Heath Guarantee.....Ask for a copy of the hearth guarantee......Ask for proof of testing done. Go with your GUT FEELINGS!!!!!!!!!!! If they say "OH I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS"...........Watch Out!!!!!!!!!! Kaye, Second Chance OES Rescue
Yep, some progress has definitely been made. Thanks to my sister-in-law's new german shepherd puppy, hubby broke down and is letting me get my dog come spring!!!!! We're still hashing out the fence issue...

Deep, calming breaths ensuing... You'd think after 2 1/2 years I'd have my stuff together, wouldn't you??? On the upside, I do know where I'm going to get my grooming tools!!!

Can someone come over to MN and just slap me now???

I re-read my e-mail, and she's gonna be out of town until the weekend, so it looks like I'm gonna have a little time to get myself in order. What do you think should be inital over the phone stuff, vs secondary meeting stuff? The health issues are pretty important, I'm gonna ask that right away, what else should I discuss to winnow it down? Maybe:

What part of WI are you in  That's pretty important!!!
What does she show in, if at all, and do the dam and sire have any titles?
What health problems does she test for?
What are the health guarantees for the puppy?
What do you do if soemone can no longer care for one of your dogs?

Any other serious cross-them-off-the-list questions I'm missing in a first interview??? I'm all a flutter finally being able to commence with THE GREAT PUPPY SEARCH!!!!
Oh Karen! I'm so excited for you! :D
Good luck Karen, Keeping fingers crossed for you :D
Go to http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamerica.org/ One of their drop down menues is titled "Getting a Puppy" I found the site helpful in formulating a questionnaire for the interview with my breeder.
