growling and barking at guests

Cooper is so happy to be loved and touched when out. Last night the mail man came to the door and he went NUTS. I figgured okay he is a stranger comming to our home.
Today the man who owns our hom came, I introduced him to cooper, and he sat and let cooper sniff him and rubbed his ears, cooper was still acting strange. Shortly an appraiser came. copper growled and barked and would not settle the entire time the man was here. when the man left he sat in his car filling out paperwork across the street ,cooper stood in the window growling and barking.
I put him on his leash and would give a sharp tug saying "quiet " or "shhh" he would stop for half a second and start right up. any tips?

I think I won’t be a big help but Shanti does the same sometimes. When people leave Shan goes crazy. A trainer told me that’s because he doesn’t like when people leave.
Also, I can notice when Shanti doesn’t like the person or/and when I am nervous in front others he goes very agresive. (That made me recall when my father tested guy that picked my sister or/and I up for a date. He would wait for Otto (a Collie) reaction. If he would growled, the guy wasn’t a good person =) ) jeje... meaning--- dogs knows!!!

* Sometimes, Shanti starts to bark and jump when people doesn’t pay attention to him i.e. play or pet.

· * Many people take their OES outside when people arrives,
* also they ask them to sit (so far didn't work with Shanti as he gets so excited when somebody arrives)--- So try to practice the SIT command.

Keep readying, I know that here you’d find good answers.

P.S.: I saw Cooper picture and he is sooooo cute.!!! Congrats.

I think you did exactly the right thing, since I JUST (last night) saw a trainer deal with the same issue. He sat with one hand on the leash right next to the collar, and the other hand wrapped around the body with the hand on the chest, comforting the dog. At EVERY SINGLE NOISE (bark, whine or growl), the trainer tugged the leash and said "no" gently but firmly while stroking the chest, until the dog quieted.

GOOD LUCK!

PS He did this in both a car where the dog was protective, and in the home where another dog went ballistic when people knocked at the door.

Ohhh. I didn't notice that quote- I did after reading Ron message... At home I can't put Shanti on his leash otherwise he would be a "mad dog" thinking that we are going for a walk (I call him "Perro loco" as he starts to do crazy thing to show me how happy he is to go out) . I mean, in our home, he never have a leash on. Only when he is going out.. How that worked to you?. Ron, Sleepymom... teach me...
will settle down once comfortable with new digs. Maggie did the same but now she doesn't even notice the mailman. Our first week she broke our mini blinds on our french door. Just give Cooper some time to figure it out and for you to figure Cooper out.

Good luck,

Maggie's Mom
thanks everyone!
we will continue to work on it. good news is he is already my velcro dog. he follows everywhere, and if for some reason he stays behind all I have to do is say "cooper come" and whistle and he will come running from anywhere.
daniko- I notice you said perro loco, wehre r you from. My mami is from Guatemala and she calls her little papillion perrito loco, wait till she meets my sheepie.
Of course, I'm not expert... but if you could leave his leash on in the house, maybe just leave it on after you come back from a walk, then after a while it becomes normal to be wearing the leash?

See how that goes for a bit... then maybe you can try to put it on and NOT go out a few times, so he doesn't associate wearing the leash to going out for fun.

Keep us posted with your progress!
maybe a show leash, they come on and off easily and he cna jsut drag it aorund...ofcourse you'd have t0o make sure he doesn't get stuck and choke.
I got Alex when he was 10 months old. His owner had a show champion and had worked with him some. He knew sit, come, heel (most of the time), and he always followed from behind --unlike Abbi. dogs that are going to grow to be big are trained to follow to lessen any alpha behavior later in life. You want to keep that behavior going.
Sounds like your fella has some training. He is going nuts because everything is new to him and he doesn't know when he has to establish what is his and what isn't. The appraiser did not play or make a good impression and Cooper may have thought he had chased him out ---which is why he continued being territorial.
A lot of this will go away while he adjusts to who is and who is not welcomed.
Having a means to actually let him know exactly what you do not want him to do, like barking or charging doors or windows is a great idea. That is where having a light, short leash on him all the time comes in handy. We never did this with Abbi because she was only 8 weeks old when we got her and my 3 year old would try to just pull her everywhere and even try to "hang" her getting her up on things. It became apparent that I could not have her on a leash all of the time.
To this day Abbi will go to any window and whine and bark if she sees another cat or dog, and she's 5. Abbi even runs upstairs to get me if she sees another cat or dog in our yard. I try to just calm her down and say "no cats". She settles and just whines, but I wouldn't open the door just then.
Alex, my standard poodle, calmed down and quit barking after I slept with him in the kitchen for two nights. Whenever he would get up and bark, I would put my hands over his mouth and tell him to be quiet. I also would hide around the corner and when he started barking if I left, I would go in very mad like and tell him "quiet". After two nights and days he knew what "Quiet" meant. (I did this in desperation, because my new husband did not like/understand dogs much). It was worth the effort for me, as I kept Alex next to me until he died of a congenial kidney defect.
Good luck with the new pup. He is gorgeous!
Danik is in BA, Argentina and Vero is down in Peru. I hope they are both having lovely cooler summer weather! We had some gorgeous days here this week, finally.
:D
greeting from Peru.....yes lovely summer weather...Pisco and I are regular beach bums these days. :)

Pisco raealy barks or growls....the only time he does it is when someone strange comes to the house for the first time....he starts growling and wont stop until I pet him and believe it!... tell him thank good boy but no...he seems to understand that I know that he is protecting me but enough is enough...then I would go to the new arrival and greet him/her and tell PIsco to say hello....then he just settles down beside me....he won`t play that first time but if they come again then he is OK and will greet them the Sheepie way :)
Vero.
so I had a mini get together last night, and was worried about cooper. I put his leash on and let him drag it. the first person who cma ein he greeted in a friendly manner, the 3 and fourth he growled at a bit, I tugged his leash said "shhhhhh" he got quiet, and withing minutes wa shis normal sheepie self. However it ws late when they came..9 pm. and they stayed till 2 am, Cooper could not sleep with everyone here, jsut as he'd dose off someone would burst out laughing and he'd wake up a little "flustered" and growl a bit, but as soon as I'd remind him "shhhh" he would simmer down.
The poor guy is exhasuted this a.m. he woke up around 6:15 and is now snoozing next to me.
Hi Everyone.

Yes, Sleepymom, I am from Argentina as agingright wrote. So your mother have a "perro loco" too? jeje...
Now we have a lovely weather down here, like spring not cold n ot hot.

Ok. Regarding the leash inside the house... do you use the same as the one for a walk? Because is too long and Shanti will pee on it, drag over the patio and house, etc.
Shanti wears a choke collar. It is very loose, so if he doesn't seat when I open the door, I just grab the collar ends.

So, what kind of leash do you use for the inside?

Thanks

i use a show leash inside.
It's not a collar it's more like a rope with a noose in it
http://www.dog-training.com/showleads.htm
I use one like the third one down. It has a hole to slip there head through, which tightend when you pull. the leash is not very long at all.
