belle, digs

Help! We have a very soggy back yard and my OES loves to dig. No matter how many times I scold her and clean her feet she keeps doing it. She is 2 years old and doesn't seem to be getting the point. She doesn't dig on the fenceline but in the middle of the yard so I know she isn't trying to get out. We don't leave her in the yard unsupervised but even when we let her out to do her business for even 5 minutes she comes back black. Help!

Welcome to the forum! :)

My first oes used to do this as well. I never was able to teach her not to dig, so instead we built her her own sandbox and taught her to dig in that instead. It worked... sand is easier to brush out.

The only other solution would be to not leave the dog outside by itself. You may have to take her out and stay with her everytime, all the time, in order to reinforce what you want her to learn.
Panda was a digger...we put big scoops of her poop in the hole and filled it back in...she never re dug where we planted the poop...just new holes...and in the other area, we have large rocks to prevent her from digging...also a lot of chicken wire around the plants that she liked to pull out...Im thinking MAYBE this summer the chicken wire can actually come down!
I tried Darcy's trick with Mojo.
He was digging in the same three spots. It worked great for him.
So far, so good. No more holes in the yard.
Now if I could just get him to stop guarding the bird feeder!
No diggers here! :D

Murphy just likes POOPSICKLES! 8O Blech!!!!!

Ick! Muffin, OES growing up, used to this too! So, gross! Annie just seems to have a problem stepping in poop lately. In 3 yrs, she hasn't stepped in any. Last week, she stepped in it twice. Even after we cleaned up the yard and there was only the recent one in there.
boo is a digger havent been able to stop this. Now i dont have a single plant in my garden. :D
We have one that starts the digging, and the other joins in. So tired of the holes and mud. They have ruined half the bushes in the yard. We have put up guards and it seems they still find somewhere to dig.
Nothing seems to work unless you stay right outside with them and then right back in when they are done going potty! We are in Wisconsin, so not too pleasant to stand there while they sniff every inch.
Our yard looks like a landmine test facility... No luck teaching them not to dig. The only thing we've see is that digging is more frequest when there's stress involved, like us not coming back for lunch for a few days or construction workers doing stuff.

Good Idea!! Benjamin is forever digging in the same spots. I try and fill them in but the next day there are holes again! (I am just a little afraid with his "boy habits" that maybe poop would be even more fun for him.....
We never experienced the digging with Izzie however our new boy, Teddie has dug severall holes and Izzie has taken up the interest. She only digs once he has started - It's like a tag team! We too never leave them outside very long by themselves, but it only takes 5 minutes. By the end of summer, my garden was gone! Good thing for these sheepies that we love them so much!
I love the idea of the poop in the hole but I agree, what if he just continues :?: - what an awful mess that would be particularily in the spring time when everything gets so moist! :? The sandbox idea is a great thought! It would also give a place for all their yard toys to be placed!
my sheepdog never digs, never gets in the garbage, never chews anything up, but he sure can run a path on a fence line!
That's not such a bad trade off ....
We used to have a really STUPID German Shorthaired Pointer and to keep her from digging we would put mousetraps in her holes. It deterred her for awhile... until she figured out how to get around them. I think we also tried cayenne pepper.
oh and we used cayane pepper too....the poop will disolve over time so that shouldnt be an issue...either that or it turns into a rock....Panda really NEVER dug again in the same spot..I say its worth a try!
