new from MI

Hi everyone! Happy New Year!

Just want to introduce ourselves, I am Mar and my OES is China Blue.

She is 5 and weighs 68 pounds. She just had a birthday on December 28th. We had a party for her. With OESs made out of twinkies. Very cute!

China has china blue eyes (hence the name). She also has vision problems. I fell in love with her the minute I saw her 5 years ago. She is a very loving companion and is my best friend next to my husband

We have 4 children, with two left at home (but they are never home :o )

So China is my baby. My husband and I spoil her rotten but we blame the spoiling on each other.

We have a Chihuahua (female)10 year old who isn't very friendly to China and all China wants to do is be friendly. That is her nature.

I would like to get another OES as a friend for China. I had the opportunity to get another female last week, but she is deaf and I don't know how that would work out. I know that I would fall in love with her the moment I seen her also so I didn't go look at her yet.

I am wondering if anyone here has any experience with a deaf OES and can give me some insight to the care and training of one. I am pretty fluent in American Sign Language, which is why she was of such interest to me, but I am not sure if I am up to the challenge of having another dog with an impairment until my daughter's Chihuahua is gone.

Please advise if anyone is familiar with a deaf OES.

Thank you in advance for any replies and I am glad to be a part of this group. :) Mar

Welcome to the forum :)
I don't have any experience with deaf dogs myself, but a few on the forum do, and from what I have heard it is not as much of a challenge having a deaf dog as one might think.
I think supervision would be doubly important, never leaving it outside alone etc since without hearing it may not know if there is a danger such as a car etc.
Many dogs learn hand signs better than spoken words anyway, even if their hearing is fine.
I have taught my dogs hand signs as well, they seem to work better, and if they lose their hearing as they age then at least we won't have communication problems.
Welcome to the forum. I don't have any experience with deaf dogs, but I'm sure someone here can help you out. We had a German shepherd that knew commands by signing them, in German, and in English. She did the best when we used sign commands, then the German, worst when I used English (she was German-bred and raised since her parents were police dogs in Munich so that may be why she responded better in German than English). I don't know how easy sign-training is though since we had her trained by a professional. I know my mini. schnauzer picked up on them just by watching us do them with her though. He was a pro at sign commands after a couple of weeks too. :)
Welcome! There are quite a few of us from MI. What part of the state are you from?

Here is a site regarding deaf dogs:www.deafdogs.com/

No kidding-- all of our new people are up north from us! However, the more MI people we get, the closer we are to having a worthwhile MI OES picinic!

Welcome Mar & China!

The Lake Orion dog park has a pavillion we could rent . . .
Welcome Mar & China!! :D

Colleen's Gucci is deaf. She says since she adopted a 2nd OES who is a hearing dog (Murphy) he has helped Gucci a lot. Just a thought...the new girl would probably benefit from your China girl! :D
Welcome to the forum Mar and China
I have heard some wonderful success stories of people having adopted deaf dogs. Certainly you will have a little more work but I have to agree that having China already will certainly assist with that.
I had a deaf Bison (Gucci) years ago and they only thing I found the most challenging was when I would call her from another room. I did train her however to come when the lights flashed on and off. This was because we had a rec. room in the basement and if she was down there and I wanted to take her out in the car or what not, I would have to go all the way downstairs to get her. Now this only worked if she was awake! Mar, I too sign and adopted Gucci because she was deaf. I would sign some things to her like “no” and “go in car” etc. I am pretty certain she understood them but it took a great deal of repetition and much contact. When my mom got her Maltese, everything in the house was much easier for Gucci as she simply followed the other around – this would probably be the case for you.
You sound like you have the heart to do it and if you are up for it, go for it! You will never regret it! Keep us posted on your decision and I look forward to seeing pics of China. Happy New Year! :D
Well Mar and China, hope you enjoy the forum there a real great lot here.

As this was my first day of work in 2 weeks, I'm a bit slow. I read this like three times increduously-- someone kept a giant buffalo-like animal in the house? Luckily the fourth time allowed me use the context clues and figure things out!

I need some rest...
