What a Christmas!

Well, we had a change of plans, so our trip to Florida didn't happen. On the 18th, my husband woke up and the right side of his face was paralized. He had had a metallic taste for a couple of days beforehand, but he kinda blew it off thinking he was getting sick or something. Well, we went to the ER that day after he called the Tricare nurse and she told him to call an ambulance immediately. He was afraid he might have had a stroke or something similar. It ended up being something called Bells Palsy - not harmful but very scary stuff. It's like the virus that causes chicken pox, shingles, herpes, etc.. A nerve between your eye and ear gets inflamed, and it hits a bone, causing it to react by paralizing a side of your face. He's kinda getting movement back in his eye and lip, but it's still not close to 100%. A little improvement is better than none though.

So, he gets in touch with his supervisor at the guard and they tell him to come home so he can see the doctor at his home base. We're in Shreveport, LA (about 4.5-5 hours away) and our youngest son's birthday was the next day. They still made him go, so he had to leave on Brandon's birthday. It was pretty sad hearing Brandon say over and over "Daddy doesn't like me...he left on my birthday." I tried to explain why, but he only turned 3 so he didn't quite get it and kept crying. Well, they told him they were going to extend his orders and he would have to stay there even longer. Ugh! Thankfully, he was able to come back before Christmas and spend Christmas with us. We ended up going back to a hotel where he is in the guard though until they finally said he was showing improvements and he could go home. Thank goodness - he was away long enough! lol

Our Christmas was good though - the kiddos were spoiled rotten, we enjoyed being around our family and nephews. Kinda makes me wish we lived closer since all the boys are around the same age. They have SO much fun together. I miss Jasper like crazy - we still haven't been able to pick him up yet. We'll get him tomorrow. I just hope he's not matted terribly. I love my parents to death, appreciate them keeping him for us, but I know they didn't brush him. I'm scared to see him tomorrow, lol He may get a shave for a late Christmas present.

Jason has to go back to his regular job on Sunday, so we didn't get have him to ourselves for very long. He is disappointed about that, but he is happy to be home. I think everyone else is still trying to settle into a routine with Daddy again. We got used to doing things without him around. :) I'm sure it won't take long - I just know everyone is happy to have him back. That was the best Christmas present of all!

Thankfully everything worked out. You had the best of all Christmas.....your family. OK, the 4 paw wasn't there, but soon will be. If Jasper needs a shave or trim, so be it. He'lll just need to snuggle with his uprights a bit more.

Sometimes we need a little reminder to realize we can't have everything perfect.

Glad husband is improving. Bell's is indeed scary.
Welcome back! :)
Sorry to hear about hubby's illness. Bells' Palsey can be short lived and not cause too much discomfort, however it can last for months, even years, and recur. I would ask the doc for any info available to hasten the recovery.
Gail I'm so glad Jason is doing better! You were indeed blessed to have your family together at Christmas. That really is the best gift of all!!
YIKES 8O So sorry to hear about your wretched experience. BP is really scarey til you know what is happening and even then it's no fun!!!! Glad to hear he is recovering. As Stacey said sometimes it can be long lasting. Just tell hubby any residual droop gives his face character :D
Glad to hear everything turned out okay in the end...your sons birthday story broke my heart.....its so sad that Brandon didnt understand...maybe hold a private birthday party with your husband...I know Bell's isnt a laughing matter, but to lighten up the mood, have your husband sing happy birthday by himself....his new facial expressions just might get Brandon laughing.....

Ps I hope your husband recovers quickly!!!
You're terrible, Darcy!

Glad hubby is on the mend. Sounds scary, but glad the boys got to see their cousins! XOXOX
Oh how horrible that you experienced something like that. I'm so sorry to hear about it. I really hope your New Years will be much better and glad to hear that hubby is on the mend.

Give those two cute little boys a hug for me!

Gail, glad that it was nothing serious and that he is on the mend.

I can relate to your being frantic when this happened. Several years ago (My son and daughter were living with me at the time) I came home from work in the evening. When I came into the house to greet them every time I opened my mouth to say something, only gibberish would come out. Thought maybe I was speaking in tongues! After a few minutes everything was normal. I happened to mention the incident to a neighbor - a nurse - several days later. She told me it sounded like I might have had a TIA (mini stroke) and advised me to go to the doc. Sure enough, after tests I found I had a minor blockage in my right carotid artery - now I take an asparin a day.
Thanks everyone. He's got a 3/4 smile now. lol Poor thing - he's getting so aggravated because he can't control it. I guess since he was put on predisone and valtrex so early (the morning it started), it seems like he's going to recover quickly instead of it taking months. I know he's just glad he can blink his eye again so that he can stop putting eye drops in it. I think in another week or two, if he keeps going at this rate, he should be back to normal. :)
Wowie.....

Bell's Palsy. What a scary thing to go through for everyone!

I'm glad he's on the mend. Give him an extra hug on my behalf.
Wow, Gail - how scary for such a young man! So glad he's on the mend. I've heard if a stroke patient (probably holds true for Bells Palsy patients as well) is given medication within a short timeframe of the onset, the chances of recovery are better and quicker. Thank God!!
