I am considering adopting a OES. any advice?

Hi- I am inquiring with an adoption agency about adopting a 4 yr old OES. I like to run, am a book worm, and would really appreciate a dog that is laid back and a couch potatoe at times...is there anythig about OES that I should know before pursuing furhter?

Hi & welcome! I think you can pretty much get a ton of info about if an OES is for you by perusing this site.

They definitey can fall into the "couch potato" category or can be very active. Only thing I would caution is that they have energy in short endurance spurts rather than long endurance, so if you're looking for a running partner I think you might be better off with a gray hound or other sporting breed.

OES's are definitely a wonderful breed with lots of friendly clownish behavior and tend to be velcro dogs. Plus I'm assuming that you have an idea about the grooming aspect. Plus since you're adopting a 4 y.o. I would just make sure that the place you're adopting it from gives it a good behavioral & physical assessment.

Good luck
I would suggest you get a much medical background as possible. If the sire and dam are known any information regarding them would be helpful. Glad you are doing research before getting a dog, you can find out anything and everything here. Good luck!
I recently adopted an OES mix from the local animal control. He is great. I am in college right now, so I read a lot. Once he got used to us, he calmed down. He will lay down on the floor next to my chair when I read and just keep me company. He can be a live wire at times though. I have another dog and the two of them can tear around the house like nothing I've ever seen before. They're not destructive, just extremely energetic. They LOVE to play chase and wrestle in the floor. I think taking them for a run would be a good idea. I think mine would absolutely love it, but I am new to OES. I would recommend one though. He is a sweet dog and I can't imagine a prettier dog. Chestnut, my OES, is a great companion too. He is just all around great.

Good luck.
All my OES have fallen more into the couch potato range than the track star range. They love to watch tv and sleep on the couch (and whomever is on the couch at the time).

I think it depends on the dog. My sheep Barney is much more active than Maggie, my parents' sheep ever was. His problem on walks, though, is that he tends to go in a zig zag pattern, which would make running difficult (and Maggie zig zagged too  )

From my experience, they have a lot of energy, but they can go slow and steady for a long time (like a trot) or run hard for a very brief time...
I have adopted 3 males ages 2-3 from Grace in Chicago. I will get another whem my current one passes. They are great dogs and adopted dogs are very grateful and loving.
