Looking for the right puppy

I live in a family of mostly girls (except for my dad). And we are thinking about an OES puppy. My dad had one a long time ago. The girls in my family are 2 years, 7 years and 10 years old plus my mom. My mom want a cuddle-companion dog. I want a friend. my baby sister does not care and my older sister does not know.

My dad says that a girl OES might hang around the family more than a boy OES.

Is a girl dog better for my family or is a boy dog better?

Hi Grayson,

First let me congratulate you for coming to this forum and trying to find out as much as possible about the breed before you go ahead and get one.

While Sheepdogs are gentle natured and clowns at heart..there exist a big goofy lovable dog that don't know their size. Therefore it's recommended that they don't usually go to home with kids under 5. Not that they are mean or anything..but because they have a such a strong herding instinct they tend to try to round up kids and smaller pets sometimes. They can accidently knock over a small child without meaning to.

Then again, I got two of my sheepies when my boys were around age two and it worked out. I think each dog is different and the two dogs I just spoke of were adopted as adults from the pound so I could already judge what their tempermanents were like.

I encourage you and your family to keep reading the post and even to ask more questions. It's a friendly place and so please don't hesitate to ask.

Welcome from me!

Welcome. So glad you came here for information. There is a lot of good information already posted and people to answer your questions.

I have had two boy sheepies. Both very much part of the family.
Our first one was about 4 years old when my son was born. Didn't have to deal with the puppy phase with him and a little one. But you still have to take precautions to keep little ones safe.

The dogs personallity is very important. We spent about an hour at the breeders playing with the puppies. That way we could see how they behave and pick the right one for our family.
I think generally females of all breeds can be a bit more tempermental and sometimes this translates to nippiness. We had a male OES when my daught was about 5 (and a small 5) who was devoted to her. He was smart enought to "tone down" his tricks around her due to her size. He used to stand on his hind legs and put his front paws on your shoulder if you patted your shoulders. WHen my daughter did this hte first time he cocked his head to the side, sat down and put his paws on her shoulders!
