is this okay?

we are getting a one year old OES on valentine weekend.
he is named stryker, but my sons had the heart set on naming the new dog cooper *originally we were supposed to get an 8 week old puupy...for those interested the whole LONG story is under getting a puupy)
in any case can we change his name or is he to old to do that?
thanks
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
I've read where if you want to change the dog's call name, append the new name to the old for a while, before dropping the old...

So you would call your new dog StrykerCooper for a while then wean him off of the Stryker part.

Now remember, this is only what I've read somewhere. My brother got a dog and changed its name from Nicky to Squirt via brute force. Jut called the dog Squirt. It worked. Did it damage the dog's psyche? Probably not.

Congrats!
...and good luck!
We adopted a 1-1/2 year old sheepie, we didn't know her origianl name we call her Maggie. If you call their name and give them treats when they respond they pretty much get it quickly. That's been the case with all the dogs we've rescued (3). Good luck.

How wonderful!! I know from OES-L that you'd undergone quite a search. I'm sorry you didn't get a puppy, but somehow I think you're doing what's absolutely right. There are lots of non-puppies who need loving care, and I'm sure that's exactly what the newest member of your family is going to get.

As to names, it really doesn't matter. Dogs listen much more to tone of voice than they do the words. She will get her new name really quickly -- don't worry. I'm thrilled for you!

Bless you.

Peace,

I really don`t know about names...Pisco originally was Bucaneer (one grey patch over his left eye)..but he just wouldn`t listen to that name...but every time we mention the word Pisco (alcoholic drink from Peru made from grapes) he would drop what he was doing and come to us... eventually we started calling him that.....So we can say he chose his own name. :D
I'm sure most of us do this....

Woof was named "Victor" by our breeder - well, you've got to gives the darlings a name. haven't you - but was Woof from the moment we got him!
Abbi is the only dog I adopted as a puppy. All of my others were over a year old, and we re-named them. Don't think one of them missed a supper call.
Congratulations on getting the new OES! With any luck, he will be through with the teething  and already know some of the basic commands. If not persistence will alway prevail.
Congrats! I hope the other situation gets resolved as nicely.
We named my dog Shaggy before we got him - Shaggy for a boy and if we chose a girl it would have been Nanna. When he was a pup, he reminded me of a bear and we started calling him Boo Boo from Yogi bear. He now has two names and will answer to either equally, or to Shaggy Boo Boo. I think your dog will learn his new name quickly. Congratulations!
Thanks for your suppor and opinions!
I got a not very nice private email from someone on the list, saying they had bought a nice dog from this breeder, and how dare I accuse them of anything....I never accused them of a thing. Someone told me they got a sick dog,so I asked them for certifications,or a visit to theri home. ANyhow I feel just sick over the entire situation and hope that it is over with soon.
I think we will go ahead an change his name to cooper. thanks again for the advice.I'm sure I'll be posting lots with questions once he is here. Does anyone have a poicture of a 13 month old sheepie, so I cna have an idea of what he may look like?! I haven't got a picture yet,as they don't have a digital camera.
thanks

I don't have one at 13 months, but I do have one at 17 months (just after her first "puppy cut", sorry). Click on this link: http://users.ntplx.net/~jtison/20030526-01.jpg

I don't seem to recall her growing much between January 2003 (when she was 13 months old) and May 2003 (when the picture was taken). She was pretty well almost full size at 12 months old.

Enjoy Cooper!! I'm sure you'll fall so far in love with him that it won't matter what he looks like :)

Peace,

thanks!
I love sheepiepictures. I'm sure he will be gorgeous! your puppers is sooooo cute. I am so inpatient. I am climbing the walls
Congratulations on your new boy Cooper!

I too read all your tribulations of trying to get a Sheepie to be part of your family - it's good to hear you have a happy ending!

There was a great link of tons of Sheepie pics that Ron once provided. If anyone can remember it? I used to love looking at Sheepies of all ages. At the moment I can't remember which topic it was listed under at this site but perhaps someone has a better memory than me and can help you out.

Have fun with Cooper and I can't wait to hear all about him once he's home.
hello!

It sounds like this post may be a bit late, but here's my 2-cents...

First off- Congratulations on finally getting a sheepy. I know all about being impatient and though it would have been VERY hard- you definately did the right thing.

My avitar pict. shows Buckley at 14 mths (he's the one on the left).

As for names- Gracie (adopted at age 4) was previously Jade- her foster mom called her Janie then we changed it to Gracie (BTW- she is also a Kansas girl- we adopted her from L&L rescue in KC, KS)

Buckley (adopted at 12 mths)- we don't know what his first name was- the pound named him Einstein (we already had a cat by that name!) so we named him Buckley

Good luck and keep us posted!

Gee, with such a great introduction, I *HOPE* you're referring to the pictures at www.oes.org.

A couple of ways to get there! You can:
Type www.oes.org in your web browser (it's a short name), or
Click on the top left corner of any page on the forum (right where it says www.oes.org), or
Click on this: http://www.oes.org/html/oes_photos.html to go straight to the picture gallery.

BTW [shameless plug coming] there *IS* a whole other part to the oes.org site beside this forum...,
And [shameless plea here] I'm looking for interesting subject matter for it, if anyone has any thoughts, please let me know!

BTW, if you were thinking about another site, please be gentle....
Ron - Please plug shamelessly!!!!!! That's the forum I was talking about!!! I am forever grateful for you and Joan started this forum - I'm sure all that post on here and gain valuable insite are also indebted to you. Three cheers for Ron and Joan!!! Hip Hip Hooray!!

I also spoke in past tense when I said I used to love looking at Sheepie pictures...my error as regardless of having the real thing to look at daily - Iwill never stop loving looking at pics of Sheepies. That site is priceless!! I would recommend everyone take a peek if you haven't done so.

Thanks again Ron and Joan. :D
thank you, I think I have already thouroughly investigates this whole sire. I have seen all those pictures a dozen times. My son's know them by heart hahahaha. We LOVE them.
thanks for sharing can't wait to have some pictures to post!
