Sheepies and a Christmas tree

OK, folks. This is our first Christmas with an OES. What can I prepare for as far as the tree is concerned? My shelties are very polite and respectful by nature, so never go near it. I had a shepherd once, that opened a few presents one evening, when unsupervised., but that is about it. And I think we have the long tail part covered, as his never seems to be in the way.
I'm asking specifically about a few things...... Will Bosley eat the tinsel on it? And will he slide into the tree it when playing with his ball? Will he just watch the blinking lights or lick them? Will he try to open presents? We are already thinking of keeping the bottom branches bare, so he doesn't try to remove the bulbs, but will that encourage him to try to climb up and get the higher ones?
The tree is an artificial one, so hopefully that solves the potencial chewing problem.
Any suggestions on getting through this without a crisis?

Yeah, GOOD LUCK!

We have a silver aluminum tree that's on a rotating stand and they've taken branches off of the tree. They knock ornaments down, they try to chew on the limbs. We use a color wheel so I don't know what they would do with strings of lights but maybe we'll decorate the tropicals this year and see what happens.

I'm waiting to see if Toby and Carl actually body slam the tree this year. They've begun moving the couch while they are playing by running into it.
I think I'm going to be really scared to put up decorations this year!
Mandy, that's exactly why I didn't get an aluminum tree when I saw one this summer.

No tree here this year - Bentley definitely would eat the tree, drag the branches around or hide under it to guard it from everyone else in the house.
Me either, Jil. I'm just sure it would be a disaster!  Maybe in a few years when they're older and calmer.
This whole tree thing has been on my mind as well!! There is no way Max is going to be able to control himself, I just know it!! My husband and kids still want the tree up, so we'll see what happens, we always get a real tree and Max just loves branches . . . . .

Tie it to the wall...no seriously. That's what my parents started doing when they got Maggie 7 Christmases ago. And it has come in handy several times. This is our first Christmas with Barney, so it'll be interesting to see how it goes with us.

I would suggest either not hanging your favorite (or more breakable) ornaments this year (or maybe just initially so you can see how he'll react to the tree. If he has a habit of running into things while playing ball, I would give 99.9% that he's going to run into the tree. I would also suggest placing it in as much of an out of the way spot as possible.

We don't put tinsel on our trees because then we can't recycle it, but maybe try not putting it on your tree this year--it is very bad for dogs or cats to eat because it could get tangled in their intestines.

My dogs have all pretty much ignored the trees, except for when they run into it while playing...I've never had a problem with chewing on it or licking bulbs, so I have no thoughts on that!

Good luck! And tie it down!
Tying the tree made me laugh. When we were kids my Dad bought the most crooked trees ever, we always tied it to the drapery rods so it wouldn't topple on us while we were decorating it. No tree for me this year, no time to put it up and enjoy it :( Other than a few ornaments getting knocked off the bottom I've had no problems.
when my first sheepdog was a puppy my family and i came home one day to find the christmas tree knocked over, and shaggy in the tree tangled in the lights with a candy cane in his mouth.

good luck
Our tree is in the formal living room, which has a door we can shut. When the door's open, Drez doesn't really bother the tree, but loves to lay under it. As suggested above, no breakable ornaments are put below shoulder height. And ours is tied to the wall, too - we get an 11' tree and it's kinda hard to decorate a large tree with no extra support!

I don't put tinsel on my tree, too dangerous for pets. I used to use only plastic decorations when my kids were little but now have switched back to glass and I did have a few knocked off and broken last year. The dogs blamed the cat.... but I don't know.....

Dancer looked pretty guilty to me.

Nah, Stacey...she's just guarding it from the cats!
Mines upstairs in the lounge room away from pooches. Had a year where one ate the decorations off the tree and pulled apart all the presents. Had a friend who made little snowman and xmas trees and stars out of salt dough for our tree and even did gift tags in the decorated salt dough for presents, being the guts she is and having a nose for anything remotely related to food, well she ate the lot, mmm very thirsty after that midnight feast, must of been all the salt in her diet!!
So have learned the hard way, tree upstairs away from the marauding pack.
You can always hang it from the ceiling...I'm being serious about it. There was an article in the paper and I saw something on tv about it. I think it looks pretty strange....but it would be out of harms way!
We haven't got our tree yet, but last year Sam left it alone. But she is already sniffing around the gifts I've been wrapping!
Hi,

I've had 20 years experience with OES and trees...when they're older they can handle it..LOL..younger and well....I've been using a tiny foot tall one on top of a hutch since Merlin's arrival. Another few years and I can go back to a real tree..sigh...

Don't use tinsel!! Especially those of you with cats..they love to play with them blowing around..and eating them cuts their innards. Very dangerous if injested. Other than that..good luck!

I will soon post a pic of my very sad Christmas tree and gifts with no bows (due to cats)...I sure can relate to that little Charlie Brown. :D
Gosh, I didn't even think about Jasper! Heaven help me, 2 toddlers and a sheepie - and 2 cats. Yikes! lol Maybe we'll skip a tree this year. ;)

Are there any real trees that aren't okay with sheepies/cats? Not sure if any are poisionous. I can't wait to put it up when hubby gets home in 2 more weeks even if it will be an adventure for a couple of weeks! :)
We've been pleasantly surprised so far. We put up 2 artificial trees over the weekend. Bailey isn't all that interested in them. The only ornaments that catch his attention are ones that look like stuffed toys - he's obviously decided that anything that looks like a squeaky toy belongs to him! So we had to move those ones up. He's an only dog, so there isn't any rough housing to worry about. And we crate him any time he's left at home alone, so that eliminates a lot of temptation. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the month of December goes as well as the first few days!

However, there is one Christmas decoration that really bugs him. I'll tell the story as soon as I post a picture...
Hi Bailey's mom!

Just saw the photos you downloaded..can't wait to hear the story about the evil snowman. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and by the look on Bailey's face I think I'm correct in assuming he doesn't like that guy? LOL! Can't wait to hear of his antics!

PS Your house and decorations look gorgeous!
I agree with Marianne! Do tell the story, Sue! It looks like Bailey wants to tear his stuffing out! LOL
