OH NO!please read!

Okay,
so I went back to look at the photo of the mother, she looks like a bearded collie?! I never noticed this before, but upon CLOSE inspection the dogs furn looks long and silky more than "fluffy"
her website said this
Although we have not been raising Sheepdogs as long as our Newfies, we are fully in love with this breed and have taken every precaution to have healthy quality dogs! We spent years researching breeders and having all recommended testing before we decided to breed.
We now have a beautiful litter of pups ready Feb.2004!...
All puppies receive two shots/wormings...AKC Reg...
health certified with a two yr. written guarantee.
$950
if the dogs are akc registered does that mena that theya re Pure Bred OES for sure?
sorry I'm over posting, I'm just one of those people who freak out easily.

I can understand your worriness. I would trust your instincts, and better yet ask for referrals. After I got my puppy I became worried about the breeder too, really because of what I had read about puppy mills etc. But I forgot all about it once Max was home for a few days. I didn't do as much homework as I should have. I found the breeders name on-line from a oes website that is reputable, then called them and cked out their website (they were only about an hour from me). So I decided to ck them out and the 2 - 13 week old puppies they still had. Low and behold I never made it to the farm. I got really lost so they met me with the 2 pupps, and I took one home from there. Like I said at first I was worried Imade a mistake, but Max has been great, a few small medical conditions at first, but nothing from breeding. I also have a lifetime medical guarantee. When I had the ohter medical problems. they really wanted to give me another puppy event though it was not a breeding issue. I still wonder about them, but am not as worried. They have called me a every few months to ck up on him. I got a great deal on Max (only $400) because he was over 13 weeks when we got him so that worried me too, but he is definitely a purebred!! When/if I decide to get another one (yes, max needs a friend), I would go back to them again. Hope this helps.

Hi,

To answer you question yes both parents have to be purebreds before the puppies can be registered.

Will you be picking up the puppy in person or ?

A reputable breeder will answer all your questions and will have had the parents checked out for any defects or medical issues before they allowed their dogs to breed and perhaps pass on any genetic defects. Those that have any potential defects will be placed as "pet" not "show dogs, which are allowed to breed usually with the original breeders permission. Dogs sold as "pets" need to be spayed or neutered. ( Please read below for what I mean by defects according to AKC - don't want people to panic!!)

With my breeder she had no "pets" only show dogs available but eventually sold me one but I had to pay the show quality fee.It really depends on their parentage and both Merlin's parents are grand champions.. so it's why I had to pay a high fee. He was a 1,000 U.S - to a Canadian this was aprox 1500 dollars! Yikes! I happened to have money for a car but otherwise would never have been able to make this purchase. I had no desire to have a show dog and would have been happy with one of "pet quality". In my area OES are difficult to find and I did make a 5 hour drive down to the US to pick him up.

The good thing was being able to check out her farm and view the other dogs as well as his litter mates. She chose Merlin weeks before I arrived - matching his personality with mine.

With my breeder and I , we have left it open to discussion if Merlin will be used as a stud - only time will tell of his potential.

Lastly for those of you that purchased a pup of pet quality...Please don't panic when I said they may have been sold as pet because of defects. Those are AKC words not mine...defects may be insignificant things ( to me at least) of not perfectly aligned teeth, any hint of pink on their noses - after puppyhood as most have black/pink noses at first, that sort of stuff that may cause them to be eleminated in the show ring - not real defects.

A breeder of Grand Champions would want their dogs to have a lineage that carries over to their pups. Much like race horses.

All this is new to me as I've never gone the show dog route - always adopting pound dogs previously - Merlin is my first from a breeder. I just read a lot and this information was from various OES sites. You may want to check out the AKC website and click on OES.

Hope that helps :O)
she said she does not show any of her dogs, but many of her pup's have been shown and have won?
she did said me pictures of the dad that are close *the mom's picture is taken from pretty far away* and he is msot deffinetly an OES.
She said :"Most of our dogs that are old enough have been OFA certified, the younger ones had preliminary x-rays. "
Okay so I am much calmer, I just had a panicky moment.
I am paying nearly 1,000 for my pup. Actually 950.00
she lives about 5 hours from me, but is driving here,to ship puppies from our airport, so I will meet her and the litter mates at the airport at 5 am on feb.12th. I will post TONS of pictures. thank you!
Hi Sleepymom,

Yes! Post lots of pictures!! We love to see pics of the dogs mentioned on here. ( I will eventually but at the moment using a very ancient comp that crashes often.)

Glad your breeder answered questions for you. No doubt you were concerned as 950 is a lot of money! I think no matter what price you pay for a puppy what becomes more important is a healthy puppy. It must be heartbreaking for those that adopted a pup from the pet store and find out he/she has numerable medical problems as they age. By that time the family is bonded with the pet and is burdened with high medical bills which some choose not to go that route. Overall it's heartbreaking.

Sorry going a bit off topic here. I know from reading info from the AKC websites what they seem most concerned with is backyard breeders whom don't have knowledge of their dogs medical history and breed them for a profit. When that happens those deficiencies are carried over to their pups whom may also be bred themselves, and bring down the standard of the species.( Meaning - a lot of medically fragile dogs or overly agressive dogs for example) As whatever deficiencies the parents have is carried over to their pups. A reputable breeder would neuter or spay their dog and not use them for breeding if there existed any medical conditions. Dogs that are bred and registered with the AKC have been medically evaluated before they are allowed to breed. Breeders also choose dogs on positive attributes and will refrain from breeding an overly agressive dog, for example ,as not wanting the puppies to potentially have this trait.

The pups should also have been tested (x-rayed) for things that this breed may be prone to - like hip dysplasia. While not 100% quaranteed when the pups are still young it's a good indicator. I think I read too that most dogs won't be bred until the age of three so as they can be 100% sure at that time of the dogs overall health and will definately know if hip dysplasia or other potential diseases is in that dogs genetics. If the test is negative than the breeder will use that dog for breeding purposes and probable chances are his/her puppies will not have that in their genetic background. If it proves positive than they are not used for breeding as it will only purpetuate in the resulting puppies. I quess the last thing anyone wants is weak dogs that are prone to disease.

Show dogs also have to be intact males and breeding females. (Personally I don't see why there is a deal about this - but perhaps again it's to allow the best quality of these dogs to breed)

Lastly, I have no experience with show dogs or that world - although have gone to one or two dog shows in my life. I just learned this stuff from reading and may be incorrect in some of my post. If anyone corrects me I wouldn't feel the least bit insulted. :D

Lastly (whew another long winded post - sorry) I just wanted to repeat what I said in my first post regarding show and pet. I hope no one is left feeling bad if they have a dog of pet quality. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them!! The only reason they may have been sold as "pet" rather than "show" is they have traits that would disqualify them in a show ring but are perfect to all the people whom love them and have them as part of their family. "Pet" dogs are generally sold for less than "show" dogs and generally are asked to be neutered or spayed by the breeder. These could be the runts of the litter for example.

I really prefered a dog as "pet" but as I've said there where none available as the breeder has already a buyer for the "pet", so I had to purchase a "show".

Hope that educated everyone a little and again I'm not an expert on this stuff...I just read a lot. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Sleepiemom...I really wish you the best of luck and want to hear all about your new pup!!!

Marianne
well,
I was contacted by some people on the OES list who have bought puppies from her that infact were very sick, with severe hip problems.
I am backing out and losing my deposit.
I got some breeder reccomendations and am hot on the trail of finding a new OES that is from a RESPONSIBLE breeder more concerend with health than money.
thanks for your help
I feel terrible over what happened in your situation and hopefully this comes across in my post. I'm very sorry for what you must be feeling now. How awful! It must be heartbreaking especially when you were so looking forward to your new pup.

Please accept my condolences. You did the right thing, overall, as the pain you would feel if your beloved pup came down with numerable medical issues as it aged the pain would be tenfold. It's all speculation what may have happened in the future but I trust the right pup will come along. I'm crossing my fingers for you. Good luck to you.

Marianne
