General question about OESs on websites

So I am wondering why the OES rescues don't go get the dogs on say petfinder.com? I mean maybe the rescues dont have enough space but I was just wondering why they don't get them out. I believe there is a post about an OES in a kill shelter... why isn't she being transferred to an OES rescue?

My guess is lots of times things are happening behind the scenes, rescue groups need money and fosters before they can step in. Both would be in short supply.

It is up to the shelter whether to hand the dog over to rescue or to keep it. Some shelters "work" with rescues, and some don't. These are some common situations:

Shelters keep nice "adoptable" purebred dogs if they expect it to be gone in a short time. If time goes by and the dog starts to get cage agressive, or depressed, they may then contact a rescue to some get the dog.

If a dog comes in that is sick, or has behavioral problems, a shelter may contact a rescue to see if they want the dog, if the shelter does not have the money or foster-home rescouces to work with the dog.

Some shelters will contact rescues if they get in a pregnant dog, or a litter of puppies, that need lots of attention.

Some shelters will contact rescues right before the dog's time is up.

Some shelters just take the dog in and contact rescue right away, or refer the people surrendering the dog over to a rescue instead of leaving it with them.

Some shelters have had a bad experience with rescues who never followed up and picked up a dog, or will only take the healthy ones or whatever.

Some shelters will work with rescues if they are contacted, but do not make the first move.

Some shelters do not work with rescues at all, and will euth a dog instead of releasing it to rescue.

Most rescues are familiar with thier local shelters and know who to contact and how they work.

Many rescues will contact a shelter about a dog, if they know about it, and discuss the options.

Rescue may have one person in thier group whose job it is to check Petfinder every day for dogs needing help. If that person is sick, on vacation or their PC is on the blink, things may get missed.

And, yes, often the foster homes are full, so there is no where to put the dog, or there is no money for a dog that needs lots of expensive vet care.

Sometimes the shelter is in an area where there are no rescue people of that breed that could go and assess the dog, and then spring it. Sometimes the closest volunteer is several hours drive away, and the shleter will not or can not hold on to the dog for any length of time.

Remember that rescues are all volunters, with lives, full-time jobs, families etc. It is very disheartening to not have the resources to help a dog, and many suffer burn-out due to the stress.

This is a Good Question!!!!! Each of the OES Rescues are different. Some will not accept a dog if it is over 5 years old. Some will not accept a dog unless it is a purebred. Some will not accept one with a tail. They are set up differetly....... There really isn't that many OES Rescue Org. or groups.....Many of the States don't have anyone doing rescue anymore. So some of us are covering 5-6 states.......If I don't have someone in that State that the Baby is in....How am I going to get it? I drive all over the place rescuing Babies......That takes money ......I don't foster the Babies as a rule...If I do it is for a short time then it comes here with me....I have been owned by Sheepies for 37 years....I have seen very few things I couldn't overcome with on with Love, Food and Positive Reenforscement..I have to get to know that Baby before I can place it in the right home.....This is the way I choose to do rescue..........So if the Baby is in a Safe Place and stands a chance of being adopted I don't pull it......If it is in danger of being put down then we start working on finding someone to get it.......This all takes Money!!!!!!!! Most of us work out of our own pockets and donations......I personally spend around $600 on just food a month..That is not counting Vet bills, medications for those that need it, monthly Heartguard and spay neuter.......This all takes money.......A person does not do rescue to make money........Most of us operate in the RED........ Rescue is Rough!!!!!!!! So most Rescues choose to only take those that are young and purebred.Because they are easier to place.....I am not knocking them.....I just choose a different route!!!!!!!! To get those that no one else wanted and are harder to place..In some cases are not adoptable at all. They will spend the rest of their lives with me.......So it is a Personal Choice..... Each Person Doing Rescue knows what their limitions are...There is NO Right Way Or Wrong Way.Sheepie Hugs, Kaye Second Chance OES Rescue
Thanks everyone for your replies... I get it now a bit better. I am always worried about those sheepies in kill shelters and places where they arent being taken care of. I know this may seem a bit .. I dont knwo what the word is I am looking for but I think that if there is a sheepie online somewhere on like petfinder or any other dog sites that they should be in a foster or rescue or something where the person knows how to take care of a sheepie. I dont know but it seems better to me that the sheepies go to places where people have had sheepies before and know how to handle them or at least have experience with sheepies. For example, I was talking to this woman in my apartment building one day when I was walking Lily and she said some guy was giving his sheepie away at the local key market ( small safeway) and I got so worried about it. I went to the market eventhough this had been a week ago and went looking for him just so that I could get the sheepie away from him and bring it to a rescue. I couldnt find them and I am so worried that the sheepie is in a bad home or worse... Then I looked at the posts about Baby in the kill shelter and just wondered why no rescue would go get her. If I could I would save all the sheepies in the world but I can't. So I just got curious as to why rescues work the way they do. anyway, after that rant my point is thanks for all you guys' input. Im looking into fostering myself once lily gets to be about 6 months or so. I just feel that that would give more sheepies a chance. I would start a rescue myself but I dont have the space at all for that and I wouldnt know where to start. I was glad to read that Baby did get adopted so that reassures me a lot. Thanks everyone.
You have such a Sweet Kind Heart..Do you live close to ayone that does rescue? Fostering is probally the hardest to do...There is a lot you have to consider.....First how will it affect Your Baby. Some of these Poor Babies comig out of Kill Shelters have problems that have to dealth with..A good Rescue Org. will not put a dog with someone that is not real experienced if the Baby has problems..They will be considerate of you and want the best for the Baby also. I have a Very Strong Stable Pack Order with My Old Babies is the only reason I am able to bring all of the Rescue Babies here...If I didn't have My Alpha Shug ....Who is The Supper Mom Of All and keeps everyone in order...Everything is set by Pack Order........ So that makes My Job as Head Alpha much easier........ But, I will tell you that Rescue Is Tough.......The Burn Out Is High!!!!! It can change a Person Completely.I know I am a different Person now then I was before I got Heavy into Rescue....The Women that I know that are really into Rescue on a daily basis are tough.....They are all Strongwilled, Determined, Opinioned and Strong Women...... I think the Men handle it a little better.....It is a roller coaster of emotions....... But, those of us that have lasted are Passionate about it.You have to be Passionate.....But in My Opinion A Person that is interested in helping rescue needs to take Baby Steps.........Small spoonfulls at a time......As you can handle more without being tornup all the time then do a little more....... If Rescue Is In Your Heart and Soul You Will Know....... It is a Learning Proccess..Nothing Is Chisled In Stone.....Each Situation is Differnt......I don't think Anyone Has All The Answers....If someone has the same opinion about everything they had 10 years ago they are Frozen In Time...Things are different and are constantly changeing.Internet, Commercial Breeders, Puppymills, Puppybrokers ............. Most of Us that are Heavy into Rescue are Older Women......There are a Dew Exceptions but not many........There used to be a lot more people involved in rescue then there is now...Who Is Going To Step Up and Take Over When We Are Gone? This really concerns me.......I think there needs to be an educational mentoring to bring younger ones on board.....Something to Think About!!!!!!! . There Is No Right Way Or Wrong Way When It Comes To Saving A Life........It Will Change Your Life Too!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does It Get Any Better Then That???????? I Don't Think SO.........Sheepie Hugs, Kaye
Well I live in Northern California nd I think the closest rescue I could find on the net was in Santa Rosa, about an hour or so from where I live. I have to contact the humane society where I used to work and see what other breed specific places there are around here. I would love to be part of a fostering program. It just hurts me so much to see all these wonderful sheepies in such trouble, they deserve so much more than that. One of my dreams that I have had ever since I was younger was to one day have lots of space and stuff so that I could rescue and foster sheepies. I just want them to have a good place to come to when no one wants to adopt them cause they are old or sick or whatever or if they are just there temporarily till they find a home.. all sheepies and sheepie mixes would be welcome. That would be the best thing ever.. maybe it will happen whether it be me who starts this or someone else. I don't knwo how it would work but that has been a dream for as long as I can remember.
