I think Tux is bored!

Tux will be two years old in a couple of weeks. He likes his walks--but not as much as he used to. Sometimes, he even pulls to come home. He runs and plays when Jim (husband) gets home--but not for a long time. He will lay in the kitchen floor and sleep all day if I don't make him get up! I really think he is bored. We don't live on a farm or anything like that--so he has nothing to "herd." We have children on our street--but most are pretty small--and although he would not hurt them--he could knock them down very easily without meaning to. We have finally located a doggie park (about 45 minutes away) and are going to take him there to play. I was thinking about getting another puppy--maybe that would help?? Or would I end up with two babies that are bored? I thought that I couldn't wait for him to settle down--some--but this is too much settling for a 2 year old! I am beginning to feel like I am failing with this beautiful dog that I wanted for so long.. I don't have enough entertainment for him. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

I wouldnt worry too much! a lot of sheepdogs are just plain lazy, it is not necessarily that they are bored. Walter is the same way; hes not big on walks in the neighborhood and he runs to get home and if i take him out back to play hell do 2 laps then go laydown.

the dog park sounds like a great idea... if he has a good time playing with the other dogs there then maybe a puppy is a good idea. but if hes a loner and isnt big on playing, then its probably not the best idea.

i would try taking him to new places for walks. try new forest preserves and parks, that usually keeps Walter interested. also try new games... my dog will NOT play fetch but hell wrestle and play tugowar for a good chunk of time.

but dont worry too much! you probably just have a lazy sheepie who is more content laying down then running around... be thankful you dont have a maniac!
Panda just turned 2 and she has calmed down quite a bit. She still loves going to the dog park and playing in the yard with us, but when she is done, she is done.....she goes thru spurts, days that she is like a puppy and days where she just doesnt want to do anything.....I think its normal.
I can't help but be envious of your dilemma!! I'm still in the puppy craziness and it seems like I just can't burn Max's energy, he is
almost 11 months. Everyday I long for him to become a lazy dog, the kind of dog you see laying on the front porch just enjoying the day!! I think taking Tux to the dog park would be great or maybe try a dog day care. Sometimes a change in routine is good too!!

Thanks so much...I do feel better. Maybe he is just slightly lazy! Walter, Panda, and Max are all so cute. This laziness started about 6 months ago--and, of course, we live where it is very hot in the summer. Maybe Tux will liven up a little when our weather cools down. However, he has always been in the house--so he does not get too hot. We will check out the doggie park and see how that goes. As we all know, sheepies are just so pretty when they are running and playing! (of course, I told Tux that the other puppies might be jealous of his good looks!) We don't live in an area where we are likely to come across any more sheepies! I will let you know how it goes! Thanks again...Oh yes..I forgot to ask. What are the little headings under the names? Like under "Maggie Jane" beside Tux's picture, it always says "Itchy." Just wondered....
Lol. Yeah, enjoy it! Just when I think we're in for a quiet night, Clyde gets his second wind... then his third...and his fourth!
I hope he likes the park. Here's some nice suggestions to try for the lazy sheepies that might get them motivated:

Stop at a neighbor's house during your walk, Take a different route on your walk, Go for a car ride, Put him in the yard and hope that someone or something walks by. This usually gets a run out of her.

You can also try some other suggestions that aren't so nice: Ring your doorbell, Tell him that someone home, like "daddy" ...I'm so mean :D Don't do this too much otherwise it'll lose it's affect when you really need him. Just cracks me up though.

I think most OES are quite lazy. You'll laugh at this one. When we got Annie at 6 yrs, she wouldn't jump into the car. We bought one of those expensive heavy ramps and finally taught her how to use it. Then...one day she jumped up on the couch. That was it..no more lifting that heavy ramp out of the trunk to get her in the car. However, she still won't completely jump in. Sometimes she'll jump on the back seat with her front paws and look back at me to see if I'll be picking up her butt. No way! I make her come back out and pat the floor so she needs to step in herself. You'd think by now she's get this down pat, but no...I've been patting the floor of the car for 2 yrs! TALK ABOUT LAZY!!! :D :D
Stacy, Panda does the same thing...she'll jump on the bed, but wont jump into the car...just her 2 front paws....I pick up her bum and put her in..lol...another game to play inside is hide and seek. Panda loves that...one of us will keep her in the family room while the other person hides....a whistle is given and the panda is on the loose...she has become an expert at all the good hiding spots....she looks there first...its a fun game had by all!!
I forgot about hide and seek. Probably because Annie doesn't get startled when she "catches" me. I used to play the game with Muffin, my OES and best friend, growing up and she was great. I'd run on the hallway ceramic tile and she'd run on the carpet. She was no dummy!
I have to laugh about the car routine!! I just got back from taking Max to petco, and he did the same thing, puts his front paws on the seat and waits for me to push his bum in the car. I do it because I think it's cute! He had a fun outing, he got lots of attention and I got him some pig's ears.

Ha ha ha. The bum and the car routine is routine with us, too. The bad part is that I can't live Barney's bum into the car! With his bad hips, if he's tired (like after doggy daycare or a bath) he either doesn't feel like jumping all the way in on his own or he can't. So for his last bath I was along in picking him up and I opened the back of my car and said JUMP! and heput his front paws in and looked at me. It took me forever, and then finally another person with a large Golden pulled up next to me and I just asked his owner to put Barns in. I think I would still be there trying to lift my dog in otherwise...
Some OES just are happy doing nothing much than laying around, watching tv with you....
I would just make sure he gets enough exercise to keep healthy... maybe some toys like the icube to get his brain going?
Ohhh this post made me laugh (sorry guys) but the car and pushing bum stories had me just chuckling.

You know the ole saying...be careful for what you wish for? Well it's like the mom that whistfully thinks, " can't wait until my baby walks"...and when they do ...ohmygosh..house needs to be babyproofed..constant supervison..and wishfull thinking of how easy it was before baby became mobile. Ha ha! Same thing with a sleepy/lazy sheepie I'm thinking.

On the otherhand, I always believe in getting everyone a friend ..two of everything..whenever some creature comes into my home..even my rabbit has a friend..not another rabbit but a guinea pig which to groom and cuddle with. Your boy may do really well with a pal...can't stop at just one you know....us multi-pet families are fond of saying. Look at Tasker and Ty...doesn't even have to be a big dog as a playmate. Still it's your choice and there's nothing wrong with having a Sheepie (rug) laying on your floor all the time. Hey good luck whatever you decide to do.

 Yow, I laughed at that, too! Been there--done that--many times!(pushing the big rear-end into the car! Actually, into a truck that is way high off the ground! Not an easy task!) Thankfully, now, he will hop right in! Thanks again for all the great ideas....I am excited to try the doggie park. And, it is actually pretty chilly here today and very windy. I will see if he seems to enjoy his walk more (when he is comfortable and I am freezing!) I am also ready to try hide and seek. I never played that with him. And, I'm sure he will probably search high and low for his Dad! I also had to laugh at "being careful about what I wish for!" Then, again, you are right....a sleeping sheepie still looks so pretty lying on the floor! Maybe we can have some other dogs over to visit and see how he likes that. I can just imagine my conversation with someone: "Can your puppy come over and play with Tux??? I want to see if he likes it or if he tries to eat your puppy?" I may have to work on my invitation--or I probably won't get many takers! Actually, I was thinking of that same invitation when my grandson was born (now 1 year old)... We did not know how Tux would react to a baby--so I wanted to borrow someone else's to try him out.... Not really, but I was a little nervous. He does fine--he lets "Camden" pull his hair and everything--then Camden squeals and Tux runs away!
Maggie Jane, if you decide not to go with a second sheepie, why don't you take up a hobby with Tux? It's a great bonding experience. You can do advanced obedience training, or agility. We just took up hiking, which Bailey loves. He also loves his trips to the dog park, and his visits with his sheepie friend Panda or his sheepie cousin Winston. But I'm pretty sure that at the end of the day he's happy to come home and have the house to himself. Spoiled sheepie! I'm away on business and I miss him terribly
thats so funny about getting into the car. London does the same thing!!! He's so lazy that he wouldnt even get out of the car, so I'd just leave the car door open and walk a few feets away from the car because I know he doesnt like being left alone. He'd panic and run after me. works every time! :)

Now you're making me wonder if I really own sheepdogs.... I cannot make the slightest sound with the doorknob or the car keys or I'll have two gray blurs running down the stairs ready to bolt out on the park.

Ours are very active and love to be outside, I really have to wear them out for the to sleep or lay down, otherwise they're always interested in going out to run and play.
