Incontinence

My Sheepy has had a problem with leaking since she was 1. She's now 6.
The vet said she could have grown too fast and her bladder never caught up or I fixed her too early. She was 9 weeks old. Whatever it is, it's a pain for my carpeting, my vehical ,anything she lays on & all the baths she needs from the smell.
The thing is I've been giving her medication for it but now she refuses to take it no matter how well I disguise it in food.
Does anyone have an idea what causes this and what are some tricks to get her to take her pills again?

Can you grind it up and put it in some yogurt or something? Did she take the pills for all these years and then just decide it wasn't going to happen anymore? Weird!
Sometimes medicine that comes in pill form also comes in liquid form...you could maybe see about that...

My parents' dog hates taking medicine, but basically my parents just both hold her and put it down her throat and then hold her mouth shut and massage her throat until she swallows it...

That is exactly what we had to do, and I found it best for the dog. A little discomfort for us, but she didn't seem to mind. All went well. Not the best method, but surely quite effective.
I glop a spoonful of peanut butter around the pill....no problems!
Getting female dogs fixed too young quite often leads to incontinence, especially among OES.
They mature slower than many breeds, at at different rates even within the breed, so it can be hard to know when is the best time for each dog.
I would suggest asking for a liquid form as well. If you've tried all kinds of tasty treats I don't know what else you can do?
I can't say much abotu the incontinence except give the meds. Now I read that you said she doesnt want to take them anymore. Well there are tabs and liquids available but what I would suggest is wrapping it in salami or a meat ball. If that doesnt work ask your vet if they could get the meds from a compounding pharmacy with flavor. The compounding pharmacies can make it taste like liver or sausage or other stuff.
Maggie prefers taking her meds wrapped in a glob of cream cheese. She actually looks forward to it. Worth a try.
I was standing in line at Petsmat the other day and I saw the neatest thing... It comes in a tube like tooth paste and you squeeze it out and it comes out in a tube around the pill. It forms a treat around the pill so the dog thinks you are giving a treat not a pill. It had some kind of catchy name.

How about using the pantie/pad things they use for dogs that are in heat? It might take some getting used to but if you could get her to wear them in the house like a diaper it sure would save the dribble on your floors. I suspect that the problem will only get worse as she get older.
Thanks for all the great idea's
I've been stuffing the pills inside a hot dog.
Seems to be working until she crunches down
on a pill and spits it out. Out comes another hot dog....
My dogs wouldn't bother to chew it....lol....
Hi Jillian- I'm from TC too :o

One thing you might also try is having 2 treats. The first one with the pill, the second without. Hold one treat in each hand. Offer the pill treat first and as soon as she takes it, immediately offer the plain treat. Dogs will often gobble down the first treat just to get to the second one.

I hope the meds will help. Good luck to you!
