Smarter than I am

Of all my OES over the years, my favorite antic was a trick my male dog in the 1980's, Randy, taught himself. Randy was one of the three dogs I raised from a pup (along with 7 rescues) so I have no one to blame but myself for his antics. But maybe I was not totally to blame because he was my wife's favorite and she did a pretty good job of spoiling him.

Randy liked to sleep in the bed... not just on the bed like a properly spoiled sheepdog, but up where he could sprawl out and put his head on the pillow-- usually on my side. If he made it to bed before me, it was a chore to toss him out so I could get in. He would pretend to be sound asleep and if that failed would grumble and brace his legs until he was finally ejected from my spot. It got to be a big game many nights.

I also had a sliding door in the master bedroom that went out to the patio. Randy and my other OES at the time knew enough to scratch at the door to be let out if they had too. My wife, who slept less soundly than I, would kick me when she heard the scratching.

"The dog wants out..." she would mumble until I stumbled out of bed to open the slider and let out one or both of the dogs, Then I would dive back under the covers... particularly if it was cold "sheepdog weather" that night while the dogs did their business.

Well, one night, this happened as usual, but when I opened the sliding door this time, I realized that Randy wasn't there. He had stealthily slipped around me when I opened the door and jumped into the bed and quickly lay his head on my still-warm pillow. By the time I took the few steps back to the bed he was already pretending to be fast asleep.

There I stood, half-asleep and shivering in the middle of the night-- out-foxed again. In the dim light I could see my wife nestled with her back against the warm bulk of Randy, thinking it was me, while I had been completely out-manouvered.

After that success, Randy pulled this little trick a number of times. It was hard to get angry with a dog that clever and at least once I just let him win and spent the rest of the night on the sofa.

That's good story! Good thing Sheepies can't read the forum or email each other or Mulligan might get some new ideas from Randy!
He, too, loves to sprawl on the bed with his head on one of our pillows. Now, at least, when we approach the bed, he reluctantly rolls over to make room.
Thanks for the good laugh!
Joan (and Mulligan!)
Oh my, sounds like here! Except, I'm the one being out "sheepdogged."

when it comes to bedtime, I'm not always "sheepieboss."
Great moves, these sheepies! Bosley will jump up on my side of the bed while I am getting ready, and refuse to move over, so I get about 2 inches from the edge. It ends up being too warm for him, though, so he walks right on hubby's head and jumps off. He also has this annoying trick of jumping onto the bed when I am trying to make it in the morning, but I guess that's a given. What more fun than jumping onto blankets that are being tossed around in the air!
LOL

That sounds like something Dancer would do, but not Sky, her being the big goofus she is would just pounce right on whoever she felt like.
I love that story!!
