California Breeder in the 1960's

I have had OES since 1964-- mostly rescues but my first two dogs were bred by a breeder in California and I am interested in finding out who is breeding from her lines.

The breeder was Winifred Barnes of Woodland Hills and she used the kennel name of Bridewell. She imported her bitch from england and bred to Chyenne Sam, of the original Shaggy Dog movie. One of her pups was Lord Nelson, the "Please Don't eat the Daisies" dog. I had Nelson's full sister and later, his grandson. among my early dogs.

Recently my last two rescued OES both died inside of two weeks. It got me thinking about all of the dogs I have had over the years.

Hi Guest! Have you tried running a search on the website that records hip certification... Come on guys help me out on this one, I'm having a brain block!(OFFA maybe?) Anyhow- you can search by name, and the dogs dams, sires, granddams etc will come up in the search. You could try pluggin in her kennel and see if there is a hit. This may aide you in your quest... good luck!

Karen :)
OK. Not a guest anymore-- I figured out how to log on....

Thanks for the reply. I believe that the OFA was not around back in the 60's though, so I doubt if they have any data on Winifred Barnes' dogs.

She and her husband (the Colonel) were up in years even when I knew them. They were an interesting, very proper, British couple with their sheepdogs in the LA area back in the early to mid 1960's. She and Mona Berkowitz were the only OES breeders in California at the time (how that has changed) so maybe someone might recognize the name Bridewell in the lineage of their dogs. Her foundation bitch was Tessa II who she called "Beauty" and who was bred to Cheyenne Sam twice that I know of. That produced a number of early champions, all very large dogs, including Adam and Charlie (Mrs Barnes' own dogs) and Nelson. Mrs Barnes later bred another bitch (a Shepton dog, I think) back to Nelson and had a huge dog out of that litter that became a champion that she called Monte (or Montgomery of Bridewell) whose son I had about 1971.

I'm so sorry. If you are up for talking about it, we welcome stories about all OES past, present and future. Good luck tracking down relatives!
Welcome :D Could you contact the AKC? They may be able to help you. I'm so sorry about your rescues, I'm sure they had a wonderful life with you.
Freddie was 13 so he lived a full life. I recsued him when he was 18 mos. he had TPLO surgery for a blown out knee at 10 and was able to walk again after a fashion and without pain after that. But in the last few months he started showing some dementia. Walked into corners and couldn't figure how to turn around... things like that.

Oliver, my other rescue was only 9. He was the most submssive OES I ever had. He had displasia most of his life and took metacam for the past year. When Freddie was gone, he just went downhill. The vet said it was liver cancer. Still the timing was so strange. Here is a picture of the two of them. That's Oliver nibbling Freddie's cheek.

This is the first time in 40 years I have not had an OES in the house-- ten in all, seven rescues and 3 pups.

What a great picture! They are so cute! And so white! With the range between their ages, must have been a horrible shock to lose them both around the same time. I'm so sorry. I believe that losing a loved one can really affect a person's health and so I bet it is the same with our furry friends. I hope you find a new OES (or two!) to share the next 40.
That is so sweet :D They look like they were best buddies.
Hi,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting pics of your adorable boys. The one looking up to the camera made my heart do flip flops as he resembled my beloved Shaggy whom passed away 18 months ago.

I also thought of something else you could try..you could perhaps do an online search of OES clubs in CA that may have heard of the people you are looking for and the lineage they produced.

Good luck to you!

Marianne and the boys (Merlin, Panda and Blue)
What beautiful babies...welcome to the forum!!! Nothing like a little nibble from a sheepie!
Sorry for your loss. What a great heritage of sheepdog history that you have had in your life. Would love to see more pix and hear more stories someday. Welcome to the forum.
What a great pic, I love it.
I am so sorry you lost them....
Mona Berkowitz is still alive. Still very fiesty but is starting to show her age. She just judged puppy groups at the Centennial.
People, remember that name! She's probably forgotten more about OES than any of us will ever know! If you ever meet her and get to talk to her value the education she can give you.
She'd probably be able to tell you who the people are using that line. She does still live in California and her phone number is listed in the OESCA member list. (If you're not a member, PM me and I'll give it to you). No e-mail address for her, she may not have a computer.

There are only 2 Bridewell dogs listed on the OFA site and they are from the '70s so no extra leads there. You may want to try contacting Tarja Peters the Breeder referral for the OESCA. She may know who's carrying that line.
If you are just looking for good breeders with big OES, I met some people who do good breeding who have the biggest, heaviest sheepdog you'd ever want to meet. Let me know, I'll give you their contact info and you can check them out.
Thanks for the information on Ms Berkowitz and the OFA records. Good to hear she is still active. She is one of the originals as you say.

It is not that I am looking for a large OES. It's just that the sudden loss of both my two dogs in the past few weeks got me to thinking about the beginning of my involvement with the breed over 40 years ago and how different things were then. Sheepdogs were very uncommon in Calif then. I never even heard of an OES with Hip Displlasia in 1964... or deafness or Hypothyroidism. It wasn't until years later, among my rescued dogs, that I had first-hand experience in all three. Parvo hadn't yet broken out in dogs but when it did in the 70's it was a vicious disease that took my big male, Monty, before there was a treatment or a vaccine... That was a bad time for dogs and their owners. Now it's just one of those things on the vaccination label you don't even think about.

But on the bright side, my wife called the Northern California OES Rescue group earlier this week and we found out they just took in a year old male from a man in San Francisco who has a terminal illness. Looks like we may have a new member of the family by the end of the week. I hope so... that will be my eleventh OES and 8th rescued dog.

They said he's 83 lbs and LOVES to play... Gotta love 'em...
That's great! Maybe it is Bear?

Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry for your loss--it's a heavy burden. Yet it sounds like you will have a new sheepie to love. Remember we love pictures.
Bless you for taking another rescue :)
Well, here is the new member of the family, Charlie, on his first day with us. 1 year old, 83 lbs, and a bundle of energy. Actually he's remarkably well behaved. Likes large balls to play with as you can see...he's carrying the soccer ball in his big mouth.

WOW!!! How nice!!! What a great addition to your family!! :D
Looks like he is having the time of his life! That's so great.
He looks absolutely happy!!!
We too, had several Champion Bridewell OES. I've had them in my life since 1959, and back then there was only Winnie and "Barney" Barnes showing in So. CA. I was the kid sitting in the benches with the dogs at shows, and these wonderful people became like Grandparents to me. Mona Berkowitz was not even "Berkowitz" yet. To my knowledge the Bridewell line stopped with Winnie. She offered it to my Mother, Marie Hawkins, years ago when she was leaving Woodland Hills. She and Barney are both gone now, and I have no idea if the one remaining Daughter of Winnie is still alive. There was a breeder in Agua Dulce about 15 years ago who had a 6th generaton back connection in Bridewell, But I know of no others.
Charlie's adorable. What a great action shot.
