OES Puppy waking at night (and driving me mad!)

Please can someone help, we have been dreaming about getting an OES for a long time and finally we got Ronja who came home with us on Saturday 29/10. Ronja is 9 weeks old and she is an absolute joy, that is until we decide to go to bed!

We have an XL cage in the kitchen (designed for a Great Dane) where she sleeps and seems to like it in there as that is where she goes to sleep in the day. As soon as we go to sleep at night she will start to whine and bark, this happens periodically throughout the night and results in us not getting much sleep at all, which is fine for my wife as she can sleep in the day when Ronja is asleep but I have to go to work at 0730 and already I am suffering.

I know there probably isn't any quick fix for this but if you can think of anything that we could do that might help sort our problem it would be much appreciated (maybe I should just wear some ear plugs!)

You have my sympathy. Is it possible she is signaling her need to go outside to relieve herself? Also, how far is the kitchen from your bedroom? She is still very young. You might considering moving the crate into your room to see if she does any better with you nearby. . .

Oh -- and congrats on your new puppy!!
I would also encourage you to move the crate to your room or as close as possible. She's a baby and probably missed her littermates. How about some pictures?
The first couple weeks were rough for us too. Bailey would make this pitiful noise that sounded a bit like a howling monkey and would only sleep an hour or so at a time. After the second week he settled down and slept for about 5 hours but we still need more sleep than that :) So we came up with kind of a weird "tag team" solution but it worked for us. Since my husband leaves for work earlier than I do he would go to bed at 9 and get up with the puppy at 4 or 5. I would stay up until midnight and play with him a bunch right before I took him out for his final potty trip and put him to bed, then I would sleep in until 7. We did that for a month or so until he was able to stay in his crate quietly for about 7 hours.

The other thing that helped was putting some big towels over one end of the crate. We have one of those wire crates, so we covered the back end with big beach towels to give Bailey more of a "den" feeling.

Good luck!
My solution turned out to be sleeping on the sofa with Luke and Beau in their crates right next to me. That worked fine, however now they are 8 and I'm still sleeping on the sofa  If I try to sleep in the bed they wake me up all night to "join" them
Thanks for all the great advice, I can't believe I have had so many just in the last few hours. I have spoken to my wife and the crate is coming into the bedroom with towels, hopefully this will help and I'll let you know how things go tonight.

I have loads of photos where is the best place to post them and what is the correct file size??
This link will tell you how to post pics:

You will find it helps to have the crate next to you so he knows you're there and you can reassure him when he whines. It will also help to partition of part of the crate so it is not too big for him. The whining at night is just a part of puppyhood. :) He will outgrow it in a few weeks. Parents of new puppies and newborn babies have a lot in common. :D :D Baggy eyes and falling asleep at your desk at work. :D :D

Welcome to the forum. Can't wait to see pics of your baby.
Just go to the picture forum and read Ron's announcement. It tells you everything you need to know.
Bailey's Mom I know what you mean about the monkey howling sound I could never sleep through that!! :o
ugh....

First weeks are tough. But I bet you would whine too if you were left to sleep all alone in a house full of giants without you mommy or your brothers and sisters.

Taking the crate into the room and placing towels help a lot. Some people suggest putting a bottle of warm water covered with a towel. What helped Lennon was to keep the crate covered with a dark towel, to make it look like a Den. That made him feel safe and then we could move the crate out of the bedroom in a few weeks, next to the door so he could hear us.

Be patient, it's just a phase and things will turn out right.

Good Luck!
I have added a few photos in the 1st Puppy Album, and they will be put up when they are approved.

Thanks for the advice saulmr.

I will ley you know how things go tommorow.

OES.org - it's not just a website, it's an addiction! You'll see...
Welcome to the forum :)

I echo what everyone else said about moving the crate into the bedroom.

You may end up finding that a smaller crate works better for housetraining, but then again you might get lucky and not have a problem. Generally a crate should be no bigger than is needed for the pup to comfortably turn around and lay down in, otherwise they will sleep in one end and pee in the other. If you find this becomes an issue you may want to put a divider in the crate.
I can't wait to see pics! :)

LOL I love that sleeping pose...thats a new one that I havent seen yet!
Welcome!
Well Ronja came into the bedroom last night we left the cage open and she was in and out a couple of times but no crying and I managed to get a good nights sleep!!

Thanks for all the good advice I don't think she was ready to be left alone all night quite yet as she follows us around the house all the time.

Ronja's head is all white however her ears are specked with dark markings.
Great! Each night will be better as she gets more used to everything.
Yippee!! So glad that helped you!

She's a beauty! :D
I'm glad you had a better night :)
By the way, what a cute puppy! :) I love the sleeping pic....
