How old to be left outside?

Gandalf is now 11 weeks. We have a fenced in yard, (with one hole but he's now too big to sqeeze through) so I know he is contained safely. I was wondering how old he has to be before I can trust him out there. I am so afraid to leave him because he loves to eat anything and I'm afraid of him choking or something tragic! Am I ridiculous? I would love to let him out in the morning to play and go potty while I do the morning routine stuff. I appreciate all the advice, this site has been so helpful for my whole family adjusting the new pup. Someday, I'll get pictures up

Myself, I don't ever feel safe leaving the dogs completely unattended. Even at a year old, if I don't keep an eye on him, Clyde loves to dig holes with his face and eat sticks. When they're in the backyard, I can see them through the windows with the exception of a few blind spots. I even check on my older dog Lucy often, who can be trusted alone in the house all day with garbage out and I know she won't get into anything. You just don't know what might happen. I worry too.

Even with a fully trained adult dog, accidents can happen and it just isn't worth it. I think 11 weeks is pretty young to be doing anything alone yet. All dogs are different and you might find that you can trust him for short amounts of time but, at that age, you'd probably be best to keep him in your line of sight! He's still way too unpredictable!
I agree with Jill. I have left Barney out by himself for short periods of time--I showered once, I did something else another time, but it makes me nervous because he likes to eat things and I'm afraid he'll eat something bad. Now that he's a year old I feel more confident with his outdoor behavior, but I still like to be able to see what he's doing.
Sunday I was painting the kitchen (Barney's domain) and there aren't any doors to it so he had to be kept outside so he wouldn't come in and lick the walls or anything and he mostly just sat on the deck right by the back door...
I agree to young to be left out, and maybe someone could steal him when your not watching. We had a dog stolen from out back fenced yard. Also my daughter had her dog stolen from her fenced in yard. But thats me,
It's not worth the risk, the potential for danger is too great. I have heard of dogs being stolen or injuring themselves trying to get out of the yard.
I think it is more a matter of behavior instead of age.
If she is getting into things when you are with her, she will probably do the same if you are not. At that age Mojo didn't want to be out by himself, he was a constant shadow!!
You might try short periods at a time. Peeking out at her every couple of minutes at first. Mojo is almost 10 months and wants to be out a lot now that it is cooler, I still check on him every so often.
We had 1 board fall off the privacy fence, he was able to squeeze through and take himself for a little walk over to the neighbors. So glad I checked on him!
My advice is to watch him from a window to double check that there aren't any places he can "escape" from under the fence or elsewhere.

I had a litter of pups once about 6 weeks old. Put them outside, went to the basement to swap clothes from the washer to the dryer and put in another load only to come back upstairs to find my neighbor (thank God), and her friend trying to put 3 of my pups back in the kennel. The fence being 6 ft. was too tall for her to reach over so she was trying to get them back in the same way they came out.

I couldn't hear her calling for me because of the radio and the noise of the washer. Needless to say I then placed a border of 4x8's around the outside of the kennel for added protection. If theres a way - they'll find it.
Bailey is nearly 10 months and I still check up on him out the window on a regular basis. He's much better than he was about eating stuff, but still manages to come in with a face full of dirt every now and then. I have a few rose bushes in big buckets of water that I'm planning to replant in December (were going to be thrown out by a neighbor - can you imagine? Let's hope I can keep them alive long enough to replant). Anyway, Bailey would far rather drink the rose bush water (which has plant food in it) than his nice clean water. Fortunately the roses are right outside my office windown so when I see him sneak over to take a drink I bang on the window! 8O
My Stella Blue is 7 and Maxwell Silver Hammer is 6......they spend a lot of time in our backyard but never unattended for more than a few minutes......I treat them just like I would a child.
The thought of them getting stolen makes me sick. We have had quite a few instances of large dogs getting stolen around here.
After they play for a little while, they mostly just lay around on the deck....I can easily see them from the back windows.
I would not chance it.
