Collar and Crate size

Any suggestions on collar size for a new OES puppy? I know he will grow out of this one pretty quick but don't want to get it too small.

Also, I have a crate right now for the puppy, but also looking for recommendation on crate size when he grows up? Had differences of opinions from several people. Recommendations for everything from the 36” long x 24” wide (L) to the 42” long x 28” wide (XL) to the 48” long x 30” wide (XXL). Not concerned about size for my vehicle, truck is big enough to carry a house in it. I think eitehr the XL or XXL is the way to go. Looking at the Large one it doesn't look like it will fit him when he's pushing 100lbs (45 kg).

Thanks for your help.

I suggest getting the largest size. We got a crate for our OES when we got him at 4 months and we just got the largest size (48") last weekend because he outgrew the other one. You can also get dividers if you need them for crate training to make the large crates smaller.
Something to consider when thinking about this is whether or not you plan on using it to transport your dog via airline.

The 500 is the max size allowed on many airlines as checked baggage. Larger sizes have to be shipped as cargo.

Even the 500 won't fit in some aircraft, but they are mostly the puddle jumpers.

We just took a 67 pound dog from Boston to Hawaii in the 500 size, and it was almost too large for him. Our 106 pounder fit in a 500, but I think it WAS borderline in size for such a long set of flights... we thought it was fine for daily use.

Good luck.
We shipped Abbi from Bahia Blanca, Argentina to BA then to Miami and on to Houston. She was on the tarmac or airplane for 22 hours, as were we.
We used a #500 crate. Bought it from a St Bernard owner who was flying his dog back. The St Bernard's new crate wouldn't fit on the plane from Bahia Blanca to BA, so he had to truck the dog the 500 miles over mountains and plains. It was quite an adventure.
Abbi was the quietest dog at all airports and won a lot of attention for being so calm. We never medicated her.
Abbi is 73 lbs and still uses that crate as her private refuge. No one messes with her crate, except to clean it. We just took the gate off and leave it open.
We bought an adjustable nylon collar when she was about 2 years old and she still uses that one (she's 4 and a half now). The nylon adjustable collar with the easy click plastic closure doesn't stain her white chest, causes minimal matting because we leave it fairly loose most days, and is quite easy to keep clean.
I think the one we bought was for large to xlarge. For a puppy you will have to buy a small or medium one. The collar has to fit snugly for walks, so you will have to purchase a couple of different sizes.
It's sort of fun to figure out what works for you, which is what we did. We bought this beautiful silver braided one for her when she was 6 months old. It would leave black marks on her fur and get all tangled up :P !
So then we tried a leather one, but it bled dye and the metal closure would get entangled in her hair and cause her a lot of discomfort. We tried a couple of other ones, but never found the "rolled" leather ones recommended by others. So if you want to try one out .... maybe you could check the rolled leather ones out. But I would wait to buy the expensive ones until after the pup is 2 years old. They will bulk up after about 18 months to 2 years, at least that is what happenned with Abbi.
Then you will know for sure what size you will need.
I guess what we should do is offer to give all of our old collars to our local shelters or Recues. Never thought about it, but I have 4 different sized collars laying in the grooming cabinent (which is also the bathroom cabinent :) .
Thanks for all the help. Just went with the small adjustable nylon collar for now. He'll grow out of it soon, but works for now.

As for the crate, he has a small one rigt now but I keep going back and forth between the 42" and the 48". I won't be using it for air travel, so looking at a collapsable. I just fear buying the 42 and having to get the next size up because he has out grown it. No nee for two huge crates in the house.
I have an idea -- get the smaller one... then if you need a bigger one, I'm sure there is a local OES Rescue program that could use the donation of a size 500 crate!
Or you could re-sale it . The smaller the better, I say. It is easier to live with your dog if he isn't taking up the whole house. Even a collapsible one is going to take up space.
But then again, I could see using a larger one too (I remember telling hubby I was only going to buy one more crate, so it had better be the biggest we could find.) Guess this will be one of those personal decisions, especially since you aren't traveling.
