Going insane, please help!

Our dear sweet Gandalf is going to cause me to loose my mind. I know, he is only 10 weeks, and I am trying to be patient, however, my house seems to have become one giant toilet! He woke up from a nap at 3:30, so we promptly went outside, and he went (yea, lots of praise, etc) then he comes in and goes poop (OK, my fault didn't leave him out long enough), then he goes potty again ( ) then I take him out again and he goes ( :D ), then when we came back in he went poop again, and potty twice more, ALL IN ONE HOUR! This can't be normal, is it? Needless to say I have gone through roles (7) of paper towels in two weeks since we've had him. We are doing the bell thing and lots of praise when he goes outside, and a firm no when he goes inside. What am I doing wrong?

You aren't doing anything wrong, that's pretty much puppy behavior :D Just give it more time and he'll figure it out.
Oops sorry, how often are you taking him out, maybe he needs to go out more. Just a thought. Fergie is 6 months but when we got her 13 weks she was trained, yes we had a few accident, my fault . She had gone to the door. What are you feeding him?? maybe to much bulk. ??
Only 7 rolls in two weeks... that's pretty good actually! LOL
It's frustrating, but they have absolutely no control over those muscles, nor do they have any sensation of when they are about to go, until about 14-16 weeks old. Then they are just beginning to figure it out. Ten weeks old would be like potty training a ten month old baby.... they just don't get it. At this point it is purely up to you to stick to a strict routine. Most say out every half hour, and if you aren't home, or if you are busy longer than that and can't watch him like a hawk it's best to crate him where he is more likely to hold it a little longer to keep his own space clean.
They're cute for a reason, it's so that you put up with all of this! LOL
Good luck, one day he'll get it! :)
I hear ya. When Ben was little, I never thought he would get the housebreaking thing down. I resorted to taking him out every fifteen minutes when he was playing, and he still had tons of accidents. At every puppy obedience class, he would pee at least twice in a one hour period.

Then on Easter Sunday I had everyone in my family over for dinner, about 15 people. I thought, boy this is gonna be great, Ben peeing every which way. But, you know, he was a perfect angel. It was as if something clicked, and he got it. He had no accidents that day, and has had very few since then, and he will be one year old next week.

So hang in there. Just when you think you can't stand him another minute, Gandalf will get the hang of it.

Hang in there it does get better.
Are you using an enzyme cleaner on his accidents? If the scent is still there he will be more likely to go there again. There are several different brands available at pet stores.
Janell-

He's just a baby!

Take him outside when he gets up in the morning,
and recite out loud to him a "potty manta" "Go potty" or
Whatever you chose, but be consistant.

When he does his business, immediately give him lots
of praise and a little good tasting treat.

Take him out after every meal and frequently in the
beginning.

Be consistant with the potty mantra, and the praise and
the treat for good behavior.

Take him to the same area outside each time.

He will so associate that good things happen outside!

Do not scold him for going in the house.

Just clean and apply the enzyme cleaner to the area.

This technique really worked for our guy, our trainer gave us some
good guidance!

Good luck, hang in there he'll do fine!

:D
The best 5 words of advice I can give you are this: Bissel Little Green Clean Machine. It works great on all messes and I have no idea how I got along without it before! I also have the Bissel Flipit Vacuum (wet side and dry side), which is great for hard floors-- it takes the place of a lot of paper towels!
It might help if you keep him on a feeding schedule so that you know exactly when he'll need to potty. Granted, it still takes some time to figure it all out, but he shouldn't be going so often if you have a good handle on the feeding. Good luck and hang in there it does get better, I promise!
OK, thanks everyone, he is just a baby. My husband and I got a plan together tonight, so that will also help, two arms to take him out instead of one. And we've never done treats for going outside, so maybe we'll start that. Also the advice about regular feedings may help. He's quite a grazer and I don't have a good handle on when he's eaten a meal, or had a few bites. Anyway, thanks for the encouragment, I'll try to be more patient

I CAN'T WAIT TO SHOW THIS TO DOUG!!!! He thinks I'm obsessed with floor cleaning machines. The add for this came on TV the other day and I started to get all stary eyed with wonder and he said "no no no NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, you have enough floor cleaning machines" Some may remember my most recent purchase, a Dyson ANimal Vac ( I LOVE IT)

Sorry to HYJACK the thread but couldn't resist.

Back to the subject at hand. You do have my sympathy. It just seems as if some dogs are born housebroken and others are such a struggle. Tasker took about 3 days to get the idea. Ty is almost 8 months and still having accidnets in the house. I did the same thing with both dogs so I have no idea why one caught on so quik and the other didn't.

Patience, Praise and LOTS of trips outside to the same potty spot. AN enzyme cleaner for the inside is a must. Make sure that you are not feeding a dog food that is too much bulk. ALot of dog food is primarily filler (if corn meal is listed as your first ingrediant that is a good clue) and those foods produce a large quantitiy of stool. Switching to a more nutrient dense dog food can provide the same amount of nutrition with less waste product. Brands like IAMS are known for that. But then, puppies simply poop alot and there isn't much you can do
I don't have much to add to all the other posts, except to reinforce the statement that things get better and is a couple of months, there will be much improvement.

Two suggestions: no grazing, and keep an eye on him. When he begins to loose interest or focus on playing, or any other activity, he's probably got to go. Use the mantra "potty" etc. and take him out. I would say to Barney: "Potty? Speak" then try to get him to bark. When I got his attention, whether he barked or not I took him out. Incidentally I had a designated fenced off area where I would take him (Pen) and put him in there until he did something. As he did his business I was there saying good Barney. - Day or night. Within two months he was housebroken and trained to go in his pen. The designated area is great when its clean up time - you don't have to scour all over the yard to find his poop.

As an aside, since then I paved that area and moved the pen to a different location. Now Maggie uses the new location but Barney still goes in the "old pen" which doesn't exist. :D

Lol. You aren't the only one! I actually have two Little Green Clean Machines. I can't believe how excited I am for my current vacuum to break so I can buy the Dyson ball. I thought about the Dyson animal but I think I need one that I can perform more evasive manuevers to get away from Clyde!
Heheheheheheheheheehhehehehe

TWO LITTLE GREEN CLEAN MACHINES???????? You are a luckey woman!
Did you see the new Bissell one that cleans by itself? It's about the size of the Little Green Clean Machine but you just set it on the spot and it scrubs and cleans? I don't even need it but I really want it!
Yes, I saw it............ I covet it, I want it............. I can't have it

You should get the Flipit then! I wish I had more hard floors in my house so I could use it. It's great for quick footprint clean ups. I'd use it more for that myself if somebody didn't attack it!
LOL... hmmm... buy something just to have it sit there and look at it....
Actually, they do have something similar for hardwood floors, I saw it on the home shopping network one night at like 2am...lol.... I'll have to keep my eye out for it.
A friend of mine has the new Bissell cleaner and says it is great! She had a Green Machinen but thinks the new item is even better. The only downside is that when the spot is clean, she has to call the carpet cleaners to make the rest of the carpet look as nice.

I think I'll put this item on my Hanukah and Christmas lists!
Did you ever buy the dog training books by Dean Rankin? If so did they work on the house breaking?
I'm picking up a new puppy in a week. I've already had 2 dogs before and they were good about going outside. But that was a spring pup. I've never had a winter pup with snow on the ground.
I now have hardwood floors and $$ area rugs.
Jean
I got my pup at 8 weeks and had him trained to go to the door within 2 days (using "puppy pads", put the pad at the door that you want him to use). Ben was totally trained by the end of the first month. Pups cannot totally control the muscles until well after 3 Mo. however the puppy pads help more than I can express! Good Luck!
with jack we had 3 areas for him. his crate (for sleep at night and naps) the play area (no rugs, easy cleaning) and outside. he knew that in 2 of those areas he wasn't supposed to poop, though sometimes he seemed to get confused as to which area he could poop in.

it worked well, no accidents in the new place, :crosses fingers:
