Chum looks so sad

The past couple days, she hasn't been grinning or panting like she usually does. I was feeding her less because of her digestive issues. I can't figure out if is a particular food, rides in the car, her meaty bone treats or what. If I eliminate everything (including the car) she eliminates fine. I had her checked for parasites when her bowels first got funky. The only thing that cheers her up is a choobles meaty bone and she still looks sad even after that treat. She walks slow with her head hanging. Her nose was drippy today. And she wasn't even psyched about being brushed - something she usually loves. Is this normal? Do dogs have moody periods? She's smiling now. . . she probably knows I am talking about her. :)

I have seen and heard of some dogs getting depressed and it could be for various reasons. Maybe she is just having an off day or something. You mentioned something about digestive problems?? maybe she has an upset tummy. My OES used to not eat and be depressed when she had upset tummy and she had that often. it took me a while to find just the right food for her that wouldnt make her tummy upset or give her diarrhea instead. also what helps if she will eat is feed a bland diet like rice and steamed chicken or rice and cottage cheese. my oes got diarrhea from chicken so it was cottage cheese and rice for her. At least if thats the problem it will pass but she could just be depressed for some other reason. Dont know if that helps at all but thats the extent of my personal experience.
Thanks. It definitely helps to know someone has experienced the same thing. I had switched her slowly to a diet version of her food. I think we should go back to the former version because she was very regular on it. Maybe it is her tummy. . . she is just so low energy.
I know our female goes through these little depression bouts especially when it's raining like it is now. Given all the rain in the Philly area lately maybe that's part of it.

I would definitely keep an eye on her though. Maybe she has a little cold or something but if she's really not herself, especially if it lasts more than a week I would bring her back to the vet. There is also special gastro dog food that vets usually carry too, I am kind of surprised they didn't suggest something like that for you, especially since she's older.
I'm sorry to hear Chummy isn't feeling good, Val. I hope it's just an upset tummy and she's back to her old self again today. :)
Valerie,
My parents' dog is about Chum's age and she has days where she is 'off' and just not as boisterous or interested in things as usual. But she usually gets out of her funk after about 2 days. As far as we can tell there isn't a reason (physically) for it--but it could be the rain and the onset of cold weather...I know it makes me want to just lull around and do nothing!
Poor Chummy! Give her a big belly rub from me and Bailey. We hope she's feeling perkier soon :D
Poor Chummie!! Give her a big hug and belly rub from me and Drez, please!

Drez has had days like this too, where she looks at you with eyes that are so empty and sad. Then the next day or so, she's fine again. Guess dogs have their off days, too. Just like we don't feel 100% every day, we can't expect them to. But of course, we obsess over the littlest change in disposition or whatever.

I'm sure Chum's fine. We just gotta make sure all the dogs stay healthy for our Dec gathering!

Chris
Thanks everyone. She was a bit cheerier today, mostly because we ran into my friend with a giant open moving van and she got to run up and down the ramp and inside and out of the truck. She is nuts about motor vehicles. So that seemed to cheer her up for a bit. So maybe she just had the blahs. . .
Poor Chumley. Oscar is our second sheepdog with digestive problems, so I tend to be hypersensitive to this sort of thing, but you might want to have her checked out further by your vet. A drippy nose, or licking of the nose can indicate a tummy upset.

From puppyhood Oscar has struggled with vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence and burping, and a gurgly tummy, in addition to a couple of rounds of giardia, just for fun. We'd get the front end under control, and then the back end would start up! We have changed his food multiple times, to no avail, and he's taken Pepcid daily for months, as well as Flagyl on and off. We've done an elimination diet (for food allergies), as well as multiple blood tests, and a maldigestion panel where he ate food with barium, and my vets x-rayed it through his system. Nothing. Finally, we did an endoscopy of his esophagus, stomach and small intestine, and discovered that he has Inflammatory Bowel Disease of his small intestine. Basically, this is a lifelong issue that we'll have to manage, but at least we have an answer.

What triggered me to respond is the description of Chumley's recent behavior changes. We lost our first sheepie, Quincy, to perforated ulcers, and looking back, it breaks my heart to see some signs of his discomfort that I missed, or chalked up to other things. He never had gas, never vomited (until his last week), and never had diarrhea, but his behavior changed. He was slower, more lethargic. He didn't want to take walks anymore, and he started sleeping on a bed. I thought it was arthritis from his elbow dysplasia (he had surgery when he was 1 year old.), as did my vet.

I hope I haven't totally freaked you out, as Chum may very well just be having a bad day, but I couldn't let this go by without responding. Good luck with your sweetie pie, and I hope all goes well.

Hi -- thanks so much for your input. I'm so sorry for your regrets with Quincy and I really appreciate your sharing his story. I don't think anyone would have attributed those symptoms to anything other than ordinary aging. . .You haven't freaked me out at all. That's exactly the sort of input that makes this forum so worthwhile (in addition to being fun). I will keep all of those possibilities in mind. She was very regular before the diet so I guess I can revert back to the old system and see if she improves. Maybe all of the changes ultimately ended up being too much even though each was introduced slowly over time. . . I will definitely keep an eye on her and ask my vet questions based on the info you've provided.
Hi Valerie and Chumley,

Just a note to let you know we are thinking of you and hoping Chumley is back to being her usual self.

Marianne and the boys
Thank you! I was planning to post an update and it was nice to see your thoughtful followup. It is so nice to have the support of people on this forum.

So she has been glumming around (new expression!) all week and yestersday morning on our walk, she was just dilly dallying to the point where I'd finally just lost patience and decided we were going on a March. I held her leash close and we walked really fast and covered a big area, slightly different than our usual walk. would you believe she just snapped out of it? maybe she just needed an endorphin surge. she is still having some trouble with food -- burping mostly. but her attitude is much improved - cheerful and active. I don't know if the walk just coincided with some other improvement but the impact was immediate. weird but good.
That's great new, Valerie. You're probably right that she just need the endorphin surge. I'm glad that Chums is feeling like her old self again! :D
Glad to hear she's feeling better.

Hey Val, what neighborhood do you live in in the city? We go into town a lot, mostly Northern Liberties, Old City & Queen Village, but since you're marching around town a lot, maybe I can be on the lookout for you & Chum!

I'm on the other side of town between Fitler and Rittenhouse Square so we tend to do a circuit between those areas. There is a lovely open grassy area at 25th and Spruce where we like to go. In that same area is a fenced dog run which we also enjoy although not quite as much. And sometimes we take walks along the new promenade on the Schuylkill River (the section between Locust St. and the Art Museum). Come over to our side! It is not as lively as the areas you listed but it very nice and rather quiet and charming.
Okay, I'll be on the lookout for you! I think the reason we don't go to the Rittenhouse area too much is because it's hard to park on the street and we're the type that will drive around for hours before we park in a lot. If you're thinking about going to the Philadelphia Kennel Club dog show, I will be showing Frank on Saturday and maybe on Sunday. It's in Fort Washington.

I'm surprised that parking is better on the other side! It is so busy and vibrant over there. I find that I have better luck finding parking closer to Fitler than to Rittenhouse square, although fabulous byob Melograno has made the neighborhood worse from a parking perspective. I'll be out of town this weekend but I'd love to know about other opportunities/events in the area. I wasn't even aware of this one. Chum and I would love to meet Frank. . . Good luck at the show!!
Glad to hear Chumley is feeling better!!!!!!!
Hey! Just catching up on posts. Poor Chum!! Hope she's feeling better, give that beautiful booty a pat from Tasker, he thinks she got the best butt in town!!!! I swear Tasker has moods, sometimes he's happy and playful, sometimes just downright grouchy. Even Ty has learned when to "steer clear"
